I hear the movie was actually pretty funny. I was going to watch it on demand last night, but ended up not.

I heard it was mediocre, About as good as the majority of the SNL sketchs that are turned into movies. If you enjoyed the sketches might as well watch the movie. I was thinking of watching it sometime

I thought it was pretty good. The jokes hit for me and the sheer amount of action movie cliches is amazing. There is a fair amount of male ass so be prepared for that.

This is what I heard.

Basically, if you like the SNL sketches you'll probably like the movie. But if you're going into the movie obliviously, don't expect a bunch of high-brow humor.

I love the sketches. The movie is really not very good. I saw half of it and decided to go do something else. This was weeks ago, I still haven't gone back to finish it...

It's just depressing that this is where Val Kilmer's career has ended up.

It's a fun movie if you don't expect much

a good, dumb comedy in my book.

No the movie is pretty horrible...i watched it last night. This movie is like the majority of other SNL sketch movies. The sketch is good in 4-5 minutes doses but an hour and a half of it is just...well....not funny. And really i don't know why NBC Universal still makes SNL sketch based movies because the majority don't make money.

I see what your saying.  But, why the respect?   I see it everywhere.  Most of the time people act like that one role was something amazing. (Not that you are.)  That "Doors" role.  That piece of shit movie, where Val and Stone paint Jim Morrison as a drunken ape felon, with not a lick of sense, who stumbled into genius.  Then he goes on to do a basket full of self stroking roles, like The Saint.

The guy is a coke fiend, who has never done a single role worth mentioning.  His career is only what it is because of a large group of loud self righteous stoners who think Oliver Stone's movies aren't incoherent. anti- American hippy bullshit.  Whom Val Kilmer is usually read as apart of.

Have you seen, Born of the 4th of July?  Tom Cruise was dynamic and seamless.  While Stone was dribbling on about something he only pretends to understand.   Val Kilmer's career is  synonymous  with that same tripe.

So why so surprised?  Val is an asshole to everyone and difficult to work with.  No, I completely disagree.  He is right where he should be.  Doing shit roles in shit movies.   At the ass end of a farce "career."

Also to add something to the topic.  No.  I haven't seen that movie.  I can't stand NBC's self promoting movies.  Plus SNL hasn't been funny since early 2000's.  Watching SNL is like watching a Youtube playlist.   What the hell happening to actual comedy writing?  Its all one liners and slapstick.

I like movies to much to put myself through that.

@Prolix: I haven't even seen The Doors. Val Kilmer is ace in Heat, Spartan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Tombstone, Top Gun, Felon, Wonderland, The Salton Sea and more. He's also Bob Kane's, and my, favourite Batman. He has talent and, when given good material, he can use it. It's just a shame he's became known as difficult to work with, which is odd because I've seen interviews with Oliver Stone, Tony Scott and Joel Schumacher who say he's just very committed.

I think it had a couple of good moments but they were very VERY sparse.  I would give it maybe a 2/5, its watchable but that doesn't mean you should.

Did you not see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?  Val Kilmer owned!!!  Anyway MacGrueber was a pleasant surprise and I will go so far as to say it is the third best movie that has been based off a SNL sketch.  First being Blues Brothers and second being Wayne's World, which might sound like high praise but those are the only good ones.

As for Val Kilmer and Oliver Stone ruining the reputation of Jim Morrison that is just bullshit.  The guy was a drunkard  that died at 27 and would routinely get in fist fights with Janis Joplin.  Also I hate to break it to you but The Doors are pretty over rated and Jim Morrison is pretty much just spewing crap that any disillusioned teenager with a vague understanding of  Nietzsche would write in their journals.

I found myself liking MacGrueber, of course I went into to it with low expectations.  Didn't see it at the theater, just bought the Blu-ray/DVD (now that is funky tech right there - BR on one side, regular DVD on the other).

And to touch on the Val Kilmer sub-topic: Don't forget VK in Willow!  WILLOW!  Plus the arcade game was fun back in the day.  I don't feel bad for him being in the MacGrueber movie, it was for camp purposes after all.

Whiskey Media should allow this to be on the Screened forums. That would be cool to be able to post the same topic on two different sites about the same subject.
