Over the past month, Governor John Hunstman Jr. of Utah (where I live) dropped by 10% in approval rating. He's likely going to go even further down. Personally, however, I've only come to like the man even more.
Hunstman was elected as Utah's governor in 2004. As my father is a state delegate, I got to see behind the scenes in the republican party's selection of who would inevitably be governor. It really seemed the party just needed someone who could beat the incumbent, Olene Walker, who had inherited the position when Gov. Mike Leavitt left to be Bush's secretary of health and human sevices. My dad seemed to have the impression that Huntsman was just the son of a billionaire, and wouldn't really be anything special.
After four years, he had a record approval rating, and ran the state exceptionally well. He had, however, gone against his party one enviornmental issues. My dad loves to hate his policies on foreign waste and the environment.
There is more to hate now, though. Not long ago, Gov. Huntsman came out in support of civil union, which was what cause the 10% drop I meantioned above. Now, he's going even further, all but denouncing his party.
Huntsman quote, from Politico:
"I don't even know the congressional leadership," Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. told editors and reporters at The Washington Times, shrugging off questions about top congressional Republicans, including House Minority Leader John A. Boehner of Ohio and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "I have not met them. I don't listen or read whatever it is they say because it is inconsequential - completely."
(Sorry it is so hard to read)
I've been hearing what the man has said on the news, and this is exactly where the republican party needs to go. Ditch the religious right. Ditch the politics of "No." The party needs to redefine it self. I'm a republican, but I've been ashamed of that affiliation in recent days with people like Sarah Palin speaking for the party. Hopefully people like Huntsman and others can get us away from Palin, and return us to the intelligent, progressive policies of Lincoln and T. Roosevelt.
I've been reading about him. Mad props. He's quite a guy. Jodi Rell is just trying to be productive and bring her state out of an 8 billion dollar deficit :-( how lame is that.
Jon Corzine, I dare you to think of somebody worse. This piece of shit gets in a car crash because his road-heading driver is speeding, and he has the audacity to not wear a seatbelt, and I'm actually surprised they didn't try the also retarded driver of the other vehicle. Perhaps this is his punishment for attempting to visit the bat-shit insane Don Imus. If you can't tell, I have the governor of New Jersey. It has only been 3 years.

He has been the governor of New Jersey for about 3 years now. Yeah, I know it is to believe, he hasn't done anything worth noting. (in a positive way)

3 years? I really have been dozing off. Hey, is President Bush still sending troops to Iraq?

Except he isn't actually a bad governor, he just happened to have made a very stupid error.

BiggerBomb, may I ask if you live in New Jersey, personally?

I live in New York. We're practically one state."
What I should ask is, what has he done that has actually benefited New Jersey? I don't think he has solid approval ratings, either, but I have a feeling I'm wrong on that account.
We dont have governors. But we have one Governor-General, currently being held by some chick for the first ever time. I dont know her names cause no one gives a shit about that position except the person who has it.
I saw him interviewed on Fox. "Don't laugh, you need many to form an opinion." He's taking the money from the stimulus package... I liked him. He seems to be a straight shooter, stick to your guns type of guy. He never stumbled in the interview, with a dry wit and a plan for his state.

Wait, what happened to that Richard Hughes fellow? Nice guy. Heard he's trying to get in the Supreme Court

I can't tell if you are joking or not, because that man is dead.
I am a republican also, but my governor pisses me off, Charlie Christ.
He wants to bring casinos into Florida, ok, I am down with that, we are a tourist state, that would help with the atmosphere. Even with that, he has written legslation making the penalty for having 1 marijuana plant a 1st class felony, which before it was the lowest misdemenor you could get. That is bullshit. It is ok for you to gamble away your life savings in the casino but 1 count em' 1 marijuana plant can get you serious jail time.
Made Salvia illegal, which is horrendously stupid. I think Florida is the only state to of done this.
He is supporting the stimulus because he cannot find any real way to bring extra revenue into our state, we are sitting on the most oil in the country, furthermore he is not a republican and only claims to be one. He is reaching out to be "bi-partisan" to get more conservative democrats, for his re-election.
I hate my governor, I wish I had Bobby Jindal or John Huntsman.
Christ was on Meet the Press on Sunday, and I have to say I wasn't particularly impressed, but he didn't come off as bad as you say, either. As for not being a republican, many say this about Huntsman as well, mostly regarding social issues, but these are the issues where I see the party being redefined in the future, so it doesn't phase me.

"Christ was on Meet the Press on Sunday, and I have to say I wasn't particularly impressed,"
BLASPHEMY! "
Please consider that my expectations were high, as I've been hearing glowing praise for the man."
Did you miss the joke? By the way, he's my governor as well and I think he's doing an okay job. "
It went right over my head. Curious, what about him do you like? I'd love to hear, to supplement what bigred said."
I don't follow local politics as much, so thabigred's first two points are new to me -- I agree with his 1 and 2 I guess. I have to say I am a bit impressed with what seem to be bi-partisan actions even if I disagree with many of his views on social issues.
Butch Otter of my home state of Idaho is kind of a moron. He is a libertarian disguised as a republican, who got elected simply because of his party and enjoys pandering to the far right. Of course, the Democratic Candidate running against him was also pretty crappy, so it was a lose-lose situation for my parents, who dislike Otter's policies but voted for him anyways.
At least I don't live in Illinois. I feel sorry for those guys. Their governor is going to jail because he tried to capitalize on appointing a member of the senate and then tried feebly to defend himself with poor justifications.
I respect a republican that is clear-headed enough to realize that Sarah Palin is an Idiot. I would love to see the party go somewhere respectable, and leave behind the current rascist, bigot, inflammatory core that makes it up now. I can agree with many republican policies, but right now the party follows people like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney, which is something i just can't accept. I want a bipartisan Washington, but i want both sides to be intelligent, which neither are particularly.

On that racial thing, the chairman of the RNC is black. I'm also glad to hear you'd like me, I'm a republican who thinkg Sarah Palin is nuts, and Rush Limbaugh is (unintentionally or not) destroying the nation.

Salvia illegal? Im about to try that tomorrow...lets hope that law doesn't come fast to indy.

Crist and Schwarzeneger are two of the best 50 governors. Palin, Patterson, and Jindal are three of the worst 50 governors.
"I'm proud to say the Governator is running my state.
I bet your governor can't carry that shit.
"
Fuck yes! That's my governor, best fucking governor ever because he has the balls and guns to stand up to these asshole state unions and make the fucking legilature stay up all night, "finish the budget or I will ram my fist into your stomach!" Seriously though, unions are good and all but some here, they just get on my nerves when you figure out what they are up to. The budget cuts in california are gonna have to come from state workers, and that includes people who get funded by the state, teachers, firefighters, cops, anyone. When Arnold tried to push for a law that says unions have to get approval from there members on ways money gets spent on political ads or something, they all came out with ads attacking him. My mom is in the teacher's union and she agreed thats the way things should be done, I mean, come one, she is in the union so why can't she have a say in how the money she pays gets used? The bottom line is that the fucking money that we are missing has to come from somewhere and its not gonna come from private business the state doesnt control, it has to come from taxes, budget cuts and arnold going down to Guatemala to rescue a diplomat and killing an alien that is 2 feet taller than him. So yeah, how fucking bad ass is my governor?
Yup I live in California so I have the Governator, but the rumors of who will replace him are getting interesting. Gavin Newsom, Jerry Brown and possibly Dianne Fienstein on the democratic side and Meg Whitman on the republican side....
Now if you excuse me I have to head to the chopper.
"I wish more politicians dared to think for themselves. I like how Schwarzenegger pushed for stem cell research and solar energy power. BoG said:

That's still a very recent action, but kudos to them for at least abandoning the racist voter base they used to embrace.
"
Yeah, kudos. They ditched them for the splitting hairs & avoiding reality voters. "Government has never, in the history of mankind created a job." "Sorry, what I meant was that governments don't make jobs, they make work."
yeah, it seems like lately the republican party has been representing nothing but narrow minded, religious, xenophobes. Of course there are a lot of smart, well balanced people in the GOP, but their image that has been built over the last decade doesnt paint a pretty picture. I have some conservative values, but I cant see myself ever associating with the GOP and the type of people who make up their base of their support.
