Comcast + GE + NBC Universal
The BIGGEST media company ever.
Thoughts on this? And how would this affect NBC?
NBC Universal SOLD to Comcast!!!!
" ...fuck. I hate Comcast, but love NBC...what do I do now? "..Keep watching NBC?
I don't know if we'll see a really dramatic change in NBC, but I would expect Comcast to eventually start locking down their content a bit more so that they can charge for it. The most obvious place will be on Hulu, where I'd expect them to charge for content. However, NBC said that they were planning on charging for stuff on Hulu eventually anyway. My only hope is that Comcast doesn't remove NBC's content from Netflix streaming.
A company I've never heard off bought out a different company I've never heard of as well as a another company I've never heard of?
My world has been shaken.
" The future of corporations ruling everything is upon us!!! Damn, I was rooting for zombies. "Whether you were taking the piss with your post or not.. I'm starting to become more and more convinced that is the way it will be.
" @MysteriousBob: That's such BS, everyone knows what NBC is. It's a big deal. "I have no idea what NBC is because
a) I don't watch TV.
b) I'm not a fucking American. Our TV system is different and vastly superior to yours.
" Comcast + GE + NBC Universal The BIGGEST media company ever. Thoughts on this? And how would this affect NBC? "Sigh. Fuck I hate corporate America. Oh and Reagan, fuck Reagan. He nuetured the fed's ability to break up these stupid uber companies.

Eurosport FTW, as well as Channel One, STS, RBC TV.
It means more NBC programs on G4TV. Currently they air "Heroes" a day or two later than NBC does. I bet there will be more shows like that showing up on Comcast owned networks. Comcast owns G4 in case you didn't know. Comcast also owns E! Entertainment Television. That channel also aired episodes of NBC's "Community"sitcom featuring Joel McHale, star of E!'s "The Soup".
I read online that the reason for this merger is Comcast wants to build a stronger competitor for Disney's ESPN networks. There's real money to be made in sports programming as FOX discovered when it acquired NFL football. Comcast already owns a few regional focused sports networks as well as the Golf Channel and VS Channel which carries NHL games.
My cable bill better go down. Those mother fuckers keep raising rates, yet my service stays the same.
" @KaosAngel said:I hope that they dont too. Its where I get my Heros fix should I miss it on Monday. If I loose that, then there will be Hell to pay. HELL I TELL YOU!!!" ...fuck. " @KaosAngel said:LOL. Everyone knows american TV fucking rules. Besides, how the fuck would you know? You dont watch TV right? Oh man, your just some american hating punk. Why are you on an american site? Everyone is welcome here except haters like you. Just leave. Rookie." @MysteriousBob: That's such BS, everyone knows what NBC is. It's a big deal. " So does this mean we won't see it on Time Warner or Charter cable? "Negative, unless/until Comcast requires more payment for their programming from the "other" cable companies and Time Warner/Charter/whoever else is still playing that game really buckles down and refuses. Basically, Comcast this just locked themselves into more bargaining power; in this regard, the real effect of all this is that everyone's cable/digital TV bill went up, except for Comcast. Of course, congress will make a passing gesture to make all kinds of promises that this won't happen, only for it to go on anyway. But that programming arm and the cable-company arm are fairly seperate from each other.
To make clear what EXACTLY is happening here: GE is buying back the remaining 20% that Vivendi owned and then selling it over to Comcast, who will own a controlling interest (read: 51%) of the company. Of course the hilarious part is that NBC Universal is borrowing the money, which it will then more or less "gift" to GE, so that GE can buy out the Vivendi arm of NBC Universal, getting them out of the picture. Then Comcast pays GE for the majority share of stock in NBC Universal. That 49% that GE will still owns can apparently be unloaded in 3 years if the whole thing is still a financial boondoggle for them. You can read more here if you really care.
" @MysteriousBob said:But if he never watches them, he can keep telling himself that Spaced ripoff number 7 is vastly superior to anything on NBC. That's how echochambers work." @KaosAngel said:House, The Office, 30 Rock, and Steven Colbert. " Comcast + GE + NBC Universal The BIGGEST media company ever. Thoughts on this? And how would this affect NBC? "Well its a good thing i don't watch television anymore. To be honest, Comcast's G4TV was the only thing i watched before they decided to ruin it and Get rid of virtually every program consisting of gaming on there. Just gives me another reason to stay away from TV knowing that NBC belongs to comcast.

Just gives me another reason to stay away from TV knowing that NBC belongs to comcast. "Not to play Devil's advocate (I'm as against big media mergers as anyone else, hurts competition,) but I actually think one of the few upsides to this for us is that the programming on Comcast's stations might actually improve. Quite frankly, they're programming is pretty horrendous save for maybe ten minutes on E! every day. But NBC does have some very highly regarded programming wings, with the namesake network, USA, SyFy, Bravo and I'm sure some other outlying stations that I can't think of right now (Is A&E them as well? I like A&E.) It would be in Comcast's best interest to, instead of dragging those valuable properties down, bring their other stations up to the same quality. Worst case scenario, it would meet up somewhere in the middle. Which, for networks like G4, would be a huge fucking improvement.

NBC is the oldest American TV network ever. It's so old, it was doing radio.
Universal is also a huge movie publisher.
No matter where in the world you live, you know something that came from NBC and Universal.
Has anybody considered the ratings played a roll in this? If you truely support NBC why didn't you buy from their sponsors and make the company profitable.
Let me continue to have the awesome USA Network shows and we're cool. Oh, and try and move Royal Pains up to an earlier 2010 season two date.
" Has anybody considered the ratings played a roll in this? If you truely support NBC why didn't you buy from their sponsors and make the company profitable. "I never really understood why NBC has started to get so low ratings compared to the other networks, especially after I started to watch NBC more than the rest.
