Does Netflix's disc requirement make you wish the PS3 had a disc-changer like your old boom box did? I feel you--and apparently Netflix does, too. At some point before or during October, Netflix plans to roll out a PS3 application that will kill the need for its instant streaming disc, leaving the Wii as the only console this generation that requires a disc with Netflix and you without a desire for a disc-changer.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings made the announcement himself during a conference call. Here's what he said, according to All Things Digital: "Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn't require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements."

 Like this, except not.
 Like this, except not.

== TEASER ==Microsoft landed an application for Netflix streaming, or what I'd like to call "All X-Files, all the time," back in November 2008. And while behind the Netflix curve, the PS3 is the exclusive console owner of a Hulu Plus application... until Microsoft unveils its own in 2011.  For all that streaming goodness and bluster, neither console has a Dillie cam app, though. Ah, but a boy can dream!

While putting in a disc to stream movies is only a minor nuisance, this will be nice to have integrated into the XMB.

I have both a PS3 and 360, and if my PS3 were not wireless, I would never use it for netflix. The current ui is aweful, especially the playback controls.

Was thinking similar things, the laws in the UK really gimp the services on both the PS3 and Xbox.

That's the one obstacle for Netflix on the PS3 for me. Sometimes I just want to watch an episode of Reno 911 before playing Dragon Age and I find myself watching 3 episodes because I don't feel like putting the disc in.

My laziness will finally be catered to! Thanks Netflix!

But really, this is good news and hopefully it runs a little faster and isn't as ugly.

Now you can use that disc as a Netflix themed drink coaster.

@piderman: yeah, I just hate how it's spinning the whole time. I can feel it shortening my poor PS3's life span. :P

Sounds good. I like the 360's Netflix interface a lot more than the PS3's interface.

Good news. I heard Netflix is going to offer a streaming only subscription plan. That would be gnarly.

If they do it right, I might just do all the netflix streaming stuff on PS3 from now on because the 360 is loud as hell. But, they need to give em the ability to fullscreen anything, like the Live one does, and I expect load times to be way better and the box art to pop up in the resonable time, like the Live one. Basicaly, make it like the XBOX one but legaly.
