interesting, I agree they might as well go whole hog but I guess its cheaper to do the helmets first then go from there. I am still waiting for the safety foam from the police car in demolition man...

Wow there only giving them £100,000 for creating this? I would be a angry camper, this is a great invention that could save thousands and thousands of lives.

You can't stop kinetic energy. Even if a rifle round is completely stopped by this, the kinetic energy transfer could be enough to break your neck.

I imagine they have a small budget to go into some larger scale of production, afterall this is something going on trial to find out if it will actually work.

As for why this is being tested on helmets only, that is likely because our head is the most fragile piece of the human body. Someone taking a bullet to the chest has a chance of surviving but a bullet to the head and its pretty much game over. Plus when you consider most modern body armour for soldiers is made up of hardened ceramic plates or metal plates which are pretty heavy you have to find something else to protect a persons head.

I mean I doubt a helmet with a few inches of steel is going to be that much use as the weight would be uncomfortable putting pressure on the neck and probably not help at all if the soldier falls and hits their head hard on a surface. Infact having a helmet thats too heavy putting pressure on the neck can cause longterm damage and even increase the chance of breaking your neck in a fall.

You can't stop it but you can redirect it. Thats the difference they are hoping to achieve with this gel. Thats why scalemail and chainmail was used far more than solid full plate armour back in Medieval times. Scalemail helps distribute the energy from a blow across a wider surface area because it is both flexible and strong. Where as full plate armour is strong but brittle and prone to becoming buckled and eventually being pierced if a blow is strong enough because it lacks any flexible nature.

Plus I don't think the purpose of this is to stop a bullet entirely but rather stop things like the shockwave from an explosion from causing trauma to the head or to stop someone from recieving fatal damage if they fall and hit their head.

That is pretty interesting, I wish they had some video to show off the stuff, that would have been pretty cool.

If the rifle round is stopped, how kinetic could it be?

They're not doing the whole body because the ceramic and scale plating they currently use (and kevlar) is already strong enough to stop most fatal bullets, whereas the helmet is not due to the kinetic energy.

The physical object can be stopped but the energy will keep on traveling.

If everyone stopped fighting then there would be no need for it. But that'll never happen so I'll just shut up
