Well, I just met this girl a few weeks ago and she told me that she had brain cancer when she was a teen. She's in her late twenties now, and she's pretty much my girlfriend now. Just wondering: do any of you guys have any experience dealing with things like this? Should I treat her any different because she had cancer at some point?
Also, video games!
Edit: She's ok now, the treatments were sucessful
New thing for me
@zombie2011: It's just that once a day she mentions something about when "she had cancer", and it feels like a really weird subject for me to elaborate on sometimes.I would dump her ass! I hate people like that.
It's great you beat cancer, don't drink anymore, lost a lot of weight, etc. but i don't want to hear about i every fucking day.
My fiancee had cancer in her kidney and had the infected organ remove, leaving her with a single, over-peforming Uber Kidney.
She rarely talks about it beyond being a bit sensitive about the scar when wearing a bikini, and having to be a little more careful when it comes to drinking.
It doesn't worry me at all, beyond the fear that it might come back one day. But I try not to stress about that, as she could just as easily be in a car accident or whatever.
I must admit that I wince a bit more than I would otherwise if she comes off a horse or whatever, but I think that's normal.
I know a dude who had cancer. He has been well for about 10 years now I think; he even jokes about it sometimes.

And the Asshole of the Year Award goes to....
My aunt recently died of cancer and it's NOTHING like losing a lot of weight you idiot.

Yep. And shinigami420 thinks it's hilarious when people lose family members to cancer.
My dad had cancer too. Was never sick a single day in his entire life, and one day says "Man, my side is hurting pretty bad". Goes to the hospital: brain cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, COPD, one completely non-functional lung and adrenal gland cancer. He died three months after he got diagnosed, so I'd be pretty fucking proud of a cancer survivor. It's cheating death. It doesn't even matter if it was something stupid like, I don't know, eye-lash cancer. That shit can spread QUICK. So beating it entirely is a boss ass move.
More power to her ass. She's a warrior.

Exactly. The easiest way to treat a cancer survivor differently is show them a shit ton of respect. They've been through hell.

Why would you treat her different? She doesn't have it now.So if she had cancer right now, you'd treat her differently? Cancer racist :P.

@tfsteefs said:You should probably be more sensitive if you're going to make like.. cancer jokes but beyond that noThis. Cancer is never funny.
I don't know man, that episode of Archer where he had breast cancer was pretty good. The Irish mob was switching out his medicine with candy and he went on that rampage... Terms of EnRAMPAGEment... I'm allowed to laugh at cancer, my dad died of it when I was a kid.
A couple of members of my family and a few friends have had cancer and it is tough to deal with, but you have to be brave and take each day as it comes.
I know my friends and family wouldn't want to be treated any differently just because they have an illness.
@MariachiMacabre said:So you think beating cancer is comparable? It's not like I beat Super Mario World, or I got straight A in physics. It's fucking CANCER. Whoever had cancer and beat it deserves to talk about it how much ever they want.@SeriouslyNow said:I wasn't comparing losing weight to Cancer, i was giving an example of people who accomplished something and don't stop talking about it.
