Hey everyone! As suggested in the title, I'm new to manga/anime movies. In fact I'm so new I haven't actually watched any. As I'm quite a film buff this is one genre I've somehow just consistently skipped by. Obviously I've heard of Akira, but I would really appreciate and suggestions you guys have.
Thanks!
New To Manga Movies - Help?
" Manga is comics. Anime is movies/shows. ...right? "Yeah, but the OP might not know that.
Spirited Away is one of the big ones.
" @TheMustacheHero said:Also, Princess Mononoke. Which is my favorite." Manga is comics. Anime is movies/shows. ...right? "Yeah, but the OP might not know that. Spirited Away is one of the big ones. "
- Ghost In The Shell
- Jin-Roh
- Any film by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso)
- The End of Evangelion (better watch the series first)
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa (good to watch the first series)
Mukoh Hadan Sword of the stranger is fucking awesome!
ghost in the shell
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on heavens door
Steamboy (I have yet to meet anyone that feels the same way about this as me...same director as Akira)
Cencoroll
the girl who leapt through time
and spriggan if you want some dumb actiony fun.
the FMA/Evangelion movies are great but shitty if you didnt see the TV series
Anime is a medium, so without stating what kind of movies you like, it's a pretty vague request. That's the common misconception about anime, that it's all ninjas, robots, and little girls. While those are a large part of its history, it's just a form of storytelling that allows for anything since it's drawn, mainly because special effects were too costly or not good enough to make it live-action.
So start off saying what kind of shows and subject matter you prefer, then it's easy for others to point straight to something for you to try.
- Paprika
- The End of Evangelion (watch the series first)
- Princess Mononoke
- Howl's Moving castle
- Grave of the Fireflies
- 5 mm Per second
- Metropolis
- Blood: The Last Vampire
Spirited Away, also, don't fall for the hype of Ghost in the Shell, that movie was shit in my opinion.
Definitely have to watch Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, look into movies by Studio ghibli i think.
My advice is don't fall for "YOU DUDDDE CHEK OUT NARUTO, ITS DA SHITZ"
The old stuff is the best stuff. Watch and learn!

But a fair few Studio ghibli can be highly recommended.
The Girl who Leapt Through Time is a great movie. I just recently watched it and it's one of the best anime movies I have seen.
- Anything from Studio Ghibli, minus Tales From Earthsea which was a bit of a stinker.
- Paprika,Tokyo Godfathers, and any other Satoshi Kon films
- 5cm per Second and other Shinkai films.
- The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- Tekkon Kinkreet
- The End of Evangelion is interesting if you've seen the series, but otherwise you could just watch the Rebuild of Evangelion films, though only the first two have been released thus far.
I tend to in a few cases find a director than go through all their works. I didn't personally enjoy Ghost in the Shell, and Akira especially. I imagine that it would do good to read the manga first, but for me that film was confusing as hell - in a bad way. Still, both are quite significant, so you'd do well to check them out regardless.
I bought my girlfriend Samurai Champloo and i had never watched anime before. It seems pretty fun and i would suggest it to someone who hasn't watched any before as its not too crazy bananas or anything.
It's More of a Series than a film though.
There was a thread about this a while back,( recomend me some anime movies!) but I'm not complaining. It's been some time, so...oh, and the links below go to trailers or video samples. All the movies below are available on DVD with English dubs or subs.
- Appleseed & Appleseed Ex Machina
- Neon Genesis Evangelion1.0 : You are (Not) Alone ~ the sequel, Evengelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance has been out in Japan for a bit and is now making the rounds at festivals in North America. There will be 4 movies in the series.
- Robot Carnival
- Wings of Honneamise
- Macross: Do You Remember Love ~ aka, Clash of the Bionoids. The latter was an English dub that was edited from the former, however a fan combined the two and it can be found on the web if you look for it. ("Super Space Fortress Macross: Clash of the Bionoids Special Edition")
- Galaxy Express 999
- Lupin the III The Castle of Cagliostro
- One Piece ~ There are about 100 uncensored episodes out on DVD from FUNimation that are dubbed and 431+ episodes (as of today) on the web that are fan-subbed. Stay away from the 4Kids dub, it is absolutely horrid. I prefer the subbed version, but whatever appeals to you is the way to go.
- Last Exile
- Gurren Lagaan
- The Slayers ~ There were 4 season and a ton of OVAs inbetween the 3rd and 4th season since there was an 11 year gap in production
- Outlaw Star
- And if you are looking for something a little more "adult", there is Queen's Blade and Ikki Tousen. There's a substantial amount of nudity in these two series, but they are not hentai (porn).
" Not enough Bible Black in this thread. "There's none, which is the correct amount.
Someone mentioned Outlaw Star, watch that it's fantastic.
When I think Manga and movie what immediately comes to my mind is the U.S. Manga Corps and Manga Entertainment. I dunno if either of those companies/subsidiaries are still around, but I suggest checking out the stuff they released.
For a few really good movies I suggest checking out:
Ghost in the Shell
Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2
Perfect Blue
Akira
Wings of Honneamise
Ninja Scroll
"The Girl who Leapt Through Time is a great movie. I just recently watched it and it's one of the best anime movies I have seen. "
glad someone else has seen this... better than most live action movies. really charming , has a bunch of personality and has some gorgeous animation.
Everyone keeps mentioning the Ghibli ones, although not all Ghibli movies are great...I just thought It was common knowledge that you had to see the miyazaki ones (I think Mononoke is the best of them but really do not care for Howls moving castle at all)
" Not enough Death Note in this thread. D: "Because the series is amazing at first, then it breaks itself fourteen episodes in.
Don't forget Cool Devices. They're classics." Not enough Bible Black in this thread. "
Anyway, if you want to watch a good Series, these are my personal favorites:
- Kanon 2006
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
- Death Note
- Mai HiME
- Ef - A TaleOf Memories
- Minami-ke (not ~Okawari~)
- Lucky Star
- Slayers
- Toradora!
- Sketchbook
The Hayao Miyazaki catalog is probably the best starting point. The holy trinity of Akira, Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell are also easily recommended. As for anything else, it really depends what you're into, as a lot of anime films tend to be very hit and miss depending on genre, and most OVAs are of longer a series and take gratuitous liberties to squish an entire arc into a couple of hours of film.
I haven't seen many anime movies, but :
Tekkonkinkreet
Spirited Away
Cowboy Bebop - The Movie
Anime series i can recommend you:
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Code Geass
The series are good to watch because there aren't hundreds of episodes, but more or less around 30-50 for each series.
Go to animevice.com, its a manga and anime site. I would say Full metal panic and Great teacher Onizuka are good to watch.
You should check out a Korean film called Sky Blue, its very nice to look at, the story is engaging as well.
Akira is you right of passage my friend, and it has a top rate sound track
