no integrity, big talk and a lof of bullshit=giant bomb
pop-up ads, or what did Jeff call it again? Flashers, Screamers? Why are there premium memberships again?
What do you mean.. looks like you aren't a member?
I just have a Sony ad on my screen for a laptop and I had a PSN one before that. Not intrusive. I do hate those ads that pop up in the screen and animate and you can't find the close button.
The worst ads are the ones with sound tho... literally commercials that play and half the time I can't mute them for whatever reason. Especially annoying when I'm trying to watch a video on the same page.
Giantbomb has not been guilty of those ads for me at least.
@StayDead: CBS makes these ads because you cry at night. just kidding. This is pretty lame. That IS the reason for a Premium membership, if you were asking.

So premium members don't get ads.
Even if the GB staff don't have direct control over the ads, I'm sure they can talk to someone about which ads not to use. And if they can't, it's still a valid complaint and the correct place to complain about it. If I was new to the site and got an ad like that, I'd probably never come back.
Man, the dream really has died. God, I feel bad for criticizing them, because now I'm realizing exactly how depressing it must be for them to be bent over like this.

Buy a premium account. Too cheap? Suffer. Don't have the cash? I know the feeling, and I sympathize, but too bad.

Adblock

Granted, I won't fault someone for having AdBlock for random Google searching - but turn it off for sites that you frequent and enjoy visiting. You do want to them to get money from those ads, don't you? So that they can stay afloat?
EDIT: I'm not changing my comment but enough people have quoted me to say that they're going to use AdBlock and that others can bear the burden of the eye-blaster ads. You don't have to quote me to tell me the same thing a billionth time - please stop.

This has got to be the guy that sent the mass email out a few days about how the internets hates GB, and the same dude that brought all that drama about some website I've never heard of shit canning some dude I've never heard of here. Rorie STOP IT!
People are really defending these types of ads?
Really? If it was my first time on the site and I got an eye-blaster I can honestly say I wouldn't come back.

Giant Bomb no longer has control of the ads that go on the site.
I can guarantee it won't stay for long, though; the guys wouldn't tolerate its extended presence. Also, I'm not getting that ad.

They'll live. Especially Giant CBSi.
Has anyone else had this ad? Anyway, anyone who thinks that the GB staff is laughing maniacally all the way to the bank while twirling their mustaches and fixing their monocles, as their poor peon viewers must suffer the almighty injustice of these advertizzments, is nuts. I'm sure they hate it (Dave must, I'm taking graphic design and web design and I know this would drive me up the wall) but what can they really do besides request for some kind of exemption? They can demand the ads be removed but that's a really bad way to start a business relationship.

Don't they get paid per click, though? I mean, if someone isn't going to click on them anyway, does it really matter whether or not they have installed adBlock?

Fuck I can't believe this but I kinda agree. It's creepy to think that GB is being affected by the merger, even if it is only slightly negative right now. These ads combined with how VInny was complaining about how they haven't gotten new cameras or set up a new studio because CBSi corporate is slow have me a little worried.
This is being blown out of proportion. No one is defending ads, but they are defending a website they love a respect. Just because you see an ad on the site doesn't instantly require a forum post about the sites integrity. There are better, and more effective, ways to get the staffs attention about this. I am sure the staff is trying their best to quell the insane ads from the site, but mergers will be mergers.

@dennisthemennis: I got that exact ad earlier today when I came to the site on my laptop before I was logged in. Couldn't believe my eyes.
Is this going to be the norm now for non-subscribers? If so that's pretty fucking horrible.
Give them some time. As I said before, they can't instantly remove something when a larger company runs the game. It is indeed a stupid decision, but generally an ad-pool is accepted without the knowledge of every single ad. Once the bomb-crew get's a whiff of this, I'm sure they'll take the needed actions. I use to frequent a blog a while back that had a iGoogle add system and one week it was just spammed with porn ads. Sometimes people hack the ad servers or the people supplying the ads let the wrongs ones through.
Who knows. I'm sure you won't see that ad again within the next few days.

It's pretty unfortunate as those things are always just gross to look at, and I too tend to leave sites thay have them.
Though this definitely isn't on the GB guys, its good to bring it up here (even if the OP did it a little aggressively). I feel like the highlighter yellow wrap around ad got canned because someone brought it up in the forum, though I might be remembering it wrong.
I'm concerned most for new viewers of the site. If this or the yellow fiasco had been on the site when I first visited it years ago, I might have never returned. Actually it was the distinct look of Giant Bomb that probably first held my interest, and ads like these can potentially rob the site of what makes it stand out at first exposure.

no one's defending these ads? in fact, it seems like for good reason, everybody in this thread hates them.

ads*
I edited my original post just now to fink that. Did it really bother you that much?
fix*
Yes, that ad is pretty rotten.
But you've been here four days. I don't really think you're in the best position to say
no integrity, big talk and a lof of bullshit=giant bomb
These guys have done their darnedest to make this site the most honest and open video game source available, and they've done an astounding job considering what they've had to work with.
As has already been said, ads that intrusive were never seen before CBSI. Even now, installing AdBlock or, you know, subscribing so the guys actually get paid for their hours of work will make the ads disappear anyway. This is their day job.
Dude, Giant Bomb kinda sorta sold out. We all know it and hopefully most of us have gotten over it. The ads are terrible, they suck ass, and they're some of the worst kinds of ads on the Internet. Do they directly contradict just about everything Jeff and Dave have said about the integrity of GB, and the Internet at large? Yes, but if you love GB, you'll realize this shit is out of their hands now and you'll pay for a premium membership. Or just use AdBlock, fucking whatever.
I don't understand the ad apologists, but then again I'm pretty sure this website could become Brony themed overnight and there would be a flock of people to defend the move.
This doesn't effect me, both because of premium membership and AdBlock, but I'd have to imagine that it's going to scare away newer users. It's also sad to see some of the negative influence of the merger that I was worried about when I first heard about the move. I hope this isn't some slippery slope.
