In the past few hours, Giantbomb has introduced a new quest system. Suddenly, the internet goes wild. Shortly after the inital "Whoa, neat," people realise that "Hey, spamming the off-topic forum with blogs will get me some quests! Cool!" So they spam the off-topic forum. Why?
Why is human nature so disposed to chase after magical points and levels? We like feeling important. We like bragging about our gamerscore. It doesn't matter if we bought Avatar: The Burning Earth or spammed the forums to get our funpoints, it's just that we got them. Now we're a higher level than the newbs and feel more powerful.
However, this isn't the point of the quest or achievement system. The point is the journey, not so much the end result. In the end, we just get numbers on a screen telling us we're level ten. If everyone cheats himself to the top, what's the point of being at the top? Gamerscore is irrelevant. Giantbomb levels will quickly become irrelevant as soon as someone leaks all the quest answers on the internet. Here's a radical idea: earn your stuff legitimately. I recently made an S-rank in Trine, not because that would get me any "levels", but because of the great feeling I got when I beat the last level without any deaths and the achievement popped up. You feel like you actually earned it.
I encourage everyone to stop worrying about getting all the quests as quickly as possible just to get them. Enjoy the ride. Have fun. Don't spam. Then again, I'm new here; my opinions are irrelevant, right?
On the nature of humans and magic funpoints.
Who let the new guy in? :-)
But, yeah I can see your point. I personally don't have a lot of blogs because I think they should be about something and, well I can rarely think of a topic worth writing about. I tend to let others come up with the ideas then scribble out my thoughts in their threads. Just like this. I know that a lot of good blogs here will roll on like nothing has happened, but I worry about the new guys (present company excluded) and the overflow of tedious blogs which are really spam or Twitter musings. We'll see how this works out over time, I guess. I think the mods are going to have to me extra vigilant until all the bugs are worked out. But, we have a good set here on GB and I think they are up to the task.
So, Giant Bomb has "achievement points" now...I wonder when we'll get our own 3D avatars.
You pretty much answered your own question. You felt a feeling of accomplishment from getting your S-rank, people get a sense of accomplishment by being the first in something, or competing with others. The human psyche is pretty messed; constantly striving for our next high, even if that means beating others. But hey, we are human, and we gotta live with it.
With that,i have been going through so many concept pages..This would be a lot easier if the site was quicker. I guess I will have to wait a while :)

Fake feeling of accomplishment. Something, something psychology. That's just how humans roll.
But yeah, I don't care much for cheating my way through it as that's no fun at all. I prefer figuring out these things myself (figuring out the current Limited Edition one was the best feeling in the world). And on that note: where the hell is the Power Glove page?
cheating achievements is stupid defeats the purpose I like having that goal set in front of you especially in games to go deeper into the but its only fun if you do it legitimately
" Is Quests the only reason you joined? "Yes.
No, I'm joking. I joined a day or two ago, before any of this quest stuff.

" @Keenblaze said:I know, right?! Wow! It's almost as if I knew the quest system was coming somehow!" @damnboyadvance said:What a coincidence! "" Is Quests the only reason you joined? "Yes. No, I'm joking. I joined a day or two ago, before any of this quest stuff. "
Except I didn't.
I'd hardly classify it as a coincidence, honestly, but if you say so, sure!
I may have misspoke. It is pure chance in that I just happened to join a day or two before the update hit, but it's not a coincidence in that... they're completely dissimilar and unrelated events.
Regardless, I believe we are digressing. I'm not entirely what the whole point of this tangent is anyway. ;)
Getting back to the quest system, the feeling of getting the Canuck quest was really satisfying. I really like achievements, just not the people who cheat and miss the whole point of them.
