Sony showed off a little prototype 360 degree "autostereoscopic" display at Siggraph. Looks promising, though it doesn't have the wow factor of an R2D2 style projected hologram. I'm having trouble thinking of many situations where full 360 degree realization of an object is better than viewing the same content on a flat display...but it's cool nonetheless.

One step closer to sci-fi style holograms
Ya saw that yesterday on Engadget it's pretty awesome.
It is definitely the next step to holograms though. Think about this. You have a Ring sitting on your desk, it elevates via a pole in the middle. The cylindrical sides are like a curtain made of something flexible and thin enough to be invisible when sitting on your desk. On these curtains are OLEDs to project your 3d image.

"This would be interesting, though I imagine it'll need to dynamically adjust the brightness and contrast to counter ambient light and the objects that are behind the display. I was really hoping for a display you could see through, and see the images floating inside the device...but I'm getting the feeling that's something we're only gonna see in movies for a while.
It only looks practical for advertising companies (once they're able to make it bigger). I don't see it replacing TV's in households.
