SPOILERS AHEAD.

I just finished the season finale of OITNB and was wondering if anyone else here has finished it? I thought it was unbelievably sad that they killed Washington! Also that cliffhanger has me so upset that we have to wait a whole year to find out what happens. I don't think Dia will shoot the gaurd, but I also didn't think that they would have killed off Washington either. In any case, I can't wait for the next season! :D

Yeah, I just finished it last night myself. It was a very good season, and it went to some really interesting and unpredictable places. Still one of the best reasons to have Netflix, and probably their best original program.

I hope someone shoots the guard, though. That guy makes pornstache look like Bailey.

You know, before he accidentally killed a beloved recurring character.

These two are the best thing about the show for me, I wish they got more screen time.

Maritza looked absolutely jaw dropping during the flashbacks...

I watched this show on accident and fell in love with it. The writing is so good, but sometimes I feel they leave certain characters out that they have previously written (wrote) good storylines for. I felt this season went for some weird stuff, why did that guard make the lady eat the baby mouse/rat? That made no sense! But they just kind of abandoned that. I really feel a more powerful ending would be if she was holding the gun at the end to that guy's head and not Pornstache's lady.

I thought the blonde lady with glasses who built the time machine did an excellent job, but they just kind of abandoned that. I really liked how the inmates stood up to the guards by standing on the table and felt Washington's death was completely unnecessary but it helped move the story along.

I'm going to clarify i don't know anybody's name in this show.

@upperdecker: They're definitely suffering from Game of Thrones syndrome (too many characters not enough time).

I think it's worse with OITNB because Game of Thrones has big pay offs or crazy moments and OITNB kinda falls flat instead.

@deepcovergecko: oh for sure. Netflix has the money and this show has the following, i wish they would slow it down just a bit, and make it like 20 episodes to close out on a lot of the stuff they set up. I agree about the two Mexican gals. They do a wonderful job. The one on the left is one of my favorite characters, but they just haven't ever done anything with her. Like those two had a love angle for a bit, then they just abandoned that. I still cannot get over how weird the rat/mouse thing was. I know they were playing a game and that came up as a question, but in what world would a guy be able to find a baby rat, set that up, and no other guard knows about it? Super weird.

I think it did make sense. His character seems to be the most downright evil guard that's ever been on the show. He knew that she was up to something, because he speaks Spanish, and could understand what she said to the "gardener" accomplice of hers. Rather than taking this information to the Warden or whatever, he decides to punish her himself in a truly sick and twisted fashion. He seems to feel that he can get away with it, partly because he's a guard, and partly because he has an idea of what she was up to.

He also seems to be a legitimate sadist, who enjoys watching people suffer. Someone needs to kill him, and soon. If they keep him around and being a monster to everyone in the next season, it might get frustrating to watch pretty quickly.

If you're over 30 or so, and actually remember this movie, I'm about to blow your mind:

My main problem with that sadistic guard is they seemed to go from 0-100 on the crazy scale extremely quickly and it felt kind of goofy to me.

It would have been more effective if they showed him doing stuff to her and becoming increasingly more twisted.

@deepcovergecko: Exactly. He went from normal dude to WAY extreme. That's what I meant. I understand if they would have seeded this guy earlier and grown him into a weird dude, but he went weird way too fast for my liking.

I can see why you'd think that way, but I thought this was much more realistic. This wasn't his origin story. If someone is a sadistic evil bastard, chances are they already worked up to it. He didn't make waves until he had a chance to do something horrible in the privacy of his own home, which was conveniently on prison property. When a guard turned up dead, he realized he could make inmates fight each other, and could persuade other guards to go along with it, because "one of ours is dead."

He's a monster, hiding in plain sight, and picking his moments. Someone needs to kill him.

Have any of you that watch the show read the book? I read the book and found it insufferable. I've never watched the show because of this but am curious if others have experienced both?

How did you find it insufferable? I never read it, but I do enjoy the show. If you explain what you didn't like about the book, I can let you know if the show follows that format, or if it has similar issues.

The show only takes the basic premise and goes it's own way.

I really loved season 4, it might be my favourite season so far. I'm really glad that the focus shifter away from Piper because I really don't like her character and I think she's by far the least interesting part of the show.

@upperdecker: yeah, I thought a couple of things felt a bit rushed. Hopfully next season they slow things down a bit and let it breathe a little more.

It's a fun show, me and my wife marathon it every year. Like some others said, my only gripe with the show is that they're cramming too much story into 13 episodes. Certain story threads could be explored further and deeper. But hey, leaving us wanting more is way better than the opposite.

@spaceinsomniac: The book is labeled as a memoir, that is based on facts, but I had to check multiple times to make sure it wasn't a work of fiction. The book goes on at length how pretty Piper is, how everyone admires her, how she is able to get along with the lesser educated 'hood' minorities and even teach them a thing or too through the prism of her proper upbringing. How her husband is 100% supporting how all her friends are always there for her. The book felt kind of narcissistic for the most part, and a tad oblivious. It honestly felt like this rich, upper class white woman describing this crazy lower class world, except somehow she managed to fit right in without ever compromising her own set of values. The whole thing rubbed me the wrong way and made me roll my eyes constantly.

You should try watching the show. Piper is constantly getting shit on, her friends aren't always there for her, and she frequently compromises her values. Prison changes her, and once you're past the first season or so, the show starts to become far less about her anyway. From early into season two, it's basically an ensemble cast. Part of what makes the show so interesting is the fact that it's consistently introducing new characters, explaining their history through flashbacks, and exploring their current situations. I'm sure none of that sort of thing happened in the book, but it's how the show works.

Thankfully, this is not at all "white person teaches minorities through the prism of her proper upbringing." And honestly, would they quit making that movie already.

I like OitNB and this new season but I really think this show should wrap up in a season or two at most. I am getting flashbacks of how terrible Jenji Kohan's other show Weeds got after they left the suburbs.

The show is really hit and miss this season. The jew x muslim story was boring. Most of the Tastee stuff was boring. The Judy King stuff was boring. I also seen the Poussey thing coming a mile away because the scenes with Soso where so lovey dovey!

Still a good show by a lot of standards tho!

I just can't see how they can go back to any resemblance of 'normality' in the prison after season 4!
