Waffles. I mean, a waffle is basically a pancake but with a crispy exterior.

Pancakes are just lesser waffles. A pancake is a Charmander and a waffle is a Charizard.

Pancakes of course because they can be made in a variety of different ways with different toppings, different thickness, different diameter, puffy, not puffy. There is a wide specturm of texture that can be applied during the cooking and preparation phase. Waffles are just waffles, the iron is gonna squish 'em same way every time.

Both are really good, but if I had to choose between the two for the rest of my life there is way more variety I can get out of pancakes than out of waffles.

I just love waffles too much but they are a bit more unhealthy. Pancakes can be cooked in so many different ways but they're so dense. Taste wise tho, I have to go waffles.

I'd say pancakes but I make my pancakes so thin most people would probably call it a crepe. So crepes is my answer I suppose?

I respect everyone's opinion, but statistics have shown that anyone who would choose pancakes over waffles is 100% more likely to be a terrible human being. It's just science. Pancakes are dope, but not better than waffles. If you're not a fan of waffles though, I will accept french toast as a substitute.

Here we go again. Big Waffle, trying to keep the 'cake folk down. Pancakes, for sheer versatility alone should top waffles. Waffles are great, but I cannot fathom why an actual human being would prefer the course, hard garbage-lattice of a waffle over the round, soft, fluffy exterior of a delicious flapjack.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the repeated squares remind them of their cold robotic insides, and give their servos some sort of comfort in the mathematical simplicity of the waffle design.

@bicycle_repairman: only difference between a crepe and a pancake apart from more involved prep is that you add more sugar and baking powder.

If you haven't eaten a beautifully rich and fluffy pancake because of some ridiculous European prejudice then you haven't lived my friend.

I like both, but if I had to pick I think I'd have to go with waffles. If there were only one restaurant left in the country ala "Demolition Man", Waffle House would probably be way up there as my choice.

Both are fan-fucking-tastic. That said, if you're going the cheap route, the precooked frozen waffles are better than the precooked frozen pancakes. And, on the other end of the spectrum, the homemade fresh cooked Belgian waffle is better than the fresh skillet cooked flapjack.

I don't want to give the impression I'd ever turn down a pancake though. Pancakes are so good. There's a breakfast joint in town that does bacon pancakes, and that's been a hangover cure countless times for me.

Fuck French toast though.

What exactly is a "proper pancake," vs an "American pancake." I've also never heard of the term "American Waffles." Also, what if I told you, Belgian Waffle are actually American?

Sometimes I'll want pancakes, sometimes waffles.

That said, most of the waffles I see are kinda shitty so usually pancakes.

American pancakes are thick, stodgy and taste like fat, and american waffles are even thicker and stodgier. Some people love this, I don't. Also no, Belgian waffles aren't American, at all. Belgium has been making waffles for a good long while longer than the US (hell, longer than the US has even been a country), and there's many different varieties, but it's easier just to refer to them all as Belgian instead of Liege or Brussels or whatever. They're pretty much the only style available where I live so it's no real big deal anyway. Same with pancakes, the only place you'd really find American style pancakes here is mcdonalds or something.

Waffles all day every day.

As I have come older, I have cared less and less for syrup, which makes pancakes kind of an impractical food. I've always found pancakes kind of dry and lacking in taste, so you have to slather them with something, but even when you do it is the most "Meh" of breakfast foods.

Waffles on the other hand are the best breakfast food. Whether they are filled with other great foods, covered in butter, or scooped around in the leftover egg yoke from the eggs you just ate, it's all great.

I'm not sure how pancakes are winning. You guys are cray cray.

I was joking, french toast is totally great. I think I'd rank it below both waffles and pancakes, but it has a place in my heart. That said, it is really easy to fuck up and bad french toast is bad.

From my internet sleuthing, "Belgium" waffles are an American simplification of the Brussels recipe. They're called "Belgium," waffles because a Brussels vendor "Bel-Gem," popularized the style that this simplified recipe was emulating (citations on the "Waffles," wiki page lol). The Liege recipe sounds amazing, though! I HAVE to try making that! So what you're saying about American style pancakes is that you've only had shitty fast food American style pancakes. I can't stand most foods off of the McDs menu but their pancakes are one of the worst food items on there. They taste like cardboard. Also, the implication that there is a such thing as a non-stodgy pancake is laughable. What exactly is it about the recipe of a typical pancake itself where you're from that makes it more inspired than an American pancake?

@flashflood_29: Nah I've been to America and had them from actual places, although maybe not gourmet places lol. Pancakes here are basically crepes (dunno how to do the circumflex) but you probably wouldn't eat them with savoury things cause I don't think that'd really work. I'm not a great fan of overly sweet things so I definitely gravitate to things you don't need to add extra sweetness to. Lemon juice with a pancakes a good combo for me, although neither of these things are something I have even remotely regularly lol.

I could easily go make a pancake right now.
A waffle? Hell no, I don't have a waffle iron!
Waffle wins by default due to hardware requirements.
Besides waffles tasting better than pancakes.

Yeah, I haven't made or even wanted pancakes in at least 4 years.

Now waffles, I've made a number of times. Belgian-style (there seems to be some debate on this) with the hand-whipped egg whites and everything (which takes forever because I'm terrible at whisking things).

Plain waffles vs. plain pancakes is easy, waffles.

Now you throw some pecans or chocolate chips in those pancakes it gets more interesting.
