I'm looking for a decent program or two that would easily convert a few of my music files into a different format. More specifically:
- I have a few files in a *.wv lossless format, and would like to convert them to flac.
- I have a few other files, that are DRM protected .wma's. I'm pretty sure the DRM server for those files may go under at one point, and want to have a DRM free copy since, you know, I payed for them and all.
- The program has to be free and work on Windows XP.

I tried googling, but most of the results that come up are programs of questionable quality and origin, so I'm hoping to find some people here that know their way around this stuff...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't dB Poweramp not free? Or rather, not legally free?

@takua108: There's a thirty day free trial.  You can do it over and over again.

Man, if I'd've known that about three years ago, it would've saved me a lot of grief.

@takua108: Yeah, you just need to clean your hard drive of all traces of the software, and you can do the trial over again.  I'm not sure if there are limitations in the trial version, but that's what I do.

I use  OJOSoft Audio Converter.  It's a pay product though.  I got it as part of a package when I bought the Total Video Converter and the DVD Ripper.  It's great, but if you want something free you might want to ask over at Tested.

If you only plan on doing this once, just use windows to burn a CD and then rip the songs off of the CD.  No idea about how to make FLAC files.

What formats are you trying to convert to/from?  Audacity is free and can handle the most common conversions, like wav to mp3 and vise versa.  If you're doing some audiophile-esque conversions you may need to abuse a free trial or two.

I recall using this program for a similar purpose and not having to pay for it. It worked really well. Arkasai recommended Audacity which is an awesome program as well. I've never used it for any type of conversion, but it's a cool program and you'll be cool if you have it installed on your hard drive.

Also, I have never heard of the *.wv extension. I will have to Google this out of curiosity.

Managed to convert the *.wv files with  dB Poweramp Audio Converter. They look to be just fine.
However, the program can't convert the DRMed *.wma's. fynne said that I could turn the files into Audio CD's, and yes, I could totally do that with the DRM'ed files (since I know for a fact that the DRM on them allows making CDs) but I'd have to go out and buy a few CDs. If I can't find any other way I'll totally do that though.

@Ariketh

: Why not go all out, and just use Windows Recorder and put a microphone to your speakers?
@Arkasai: Mentioned in the first and this post...
@roofy: Can it convert DRM *.wma?
@Castro: Wavpak. Pretty good in terms of lossless and lossy quality and filesize, but man, finding things that support this format is a pain. Not worth the trouble.

EDIT: Oh, and Audacity also doesn't support DRM...
