So, we live in Michigan. In case you didn't know, our economy is pretty bad, and they've been cutting stuff. Next week, the school board is voting on whether to cut some teachers or not.
And man, our school didn't handle that well. All of the good teachers are being cut. Not the ones with all the qualifications, but the ones that can actually relate to kids instead of yelling at them for talking. We had signs, and went through the halls and yelled "NO CUTS!" Even our history teacher was touched, and started crying. She said she didn't think so many people would actually care, but these are good teachers. They are young, but they are nice and everything. They don't deserve to be laid off. If anybody needs to be, it's the older, bitchier teachers. Not the teachers that are nice to kids, and do their job at the same time.
Of course, we were stopped later. We were kept in the auditorium for half of recess so that they could explain that we needed a permit and stuff. But we damn well made our point to the school, at least. We do care. We deserve a say in who goes and who stays. It's our school. We give the teachers their jobs. If we all stopped going, everyone there would lose their jobs. It belongs to us, as well as the parents. It us that should make the decision as to who goes, not them.
We're going to the school board meeting next Wednesday when they vote on whether to cut jobs or not. We will be there, and will try to make our message clear. Hopefully, they'll be convinced. These are good people that are about to lose their jobs, not even 10 years into their career. Wish us luck next week!
Protesting at school
ummm You do realize that those same "teachers that are nice to the kids, and do their jobs at the same time" are in about 3-5 years turn into those "older, bitchier teachers".
" ummm You do realize that those same "teachers that are nice to the kids, and do their jobs at the same time" are in about 3-5 years turn into those "older, bitchier teachers". "Probably not. Those "older, bitchier" teachers probably grew up in the generation where they were constantly yelled at and slapped with rulers. Heck, the gym teachers used to throw erasers at kids. Unlike the younger teachers, that understand us better and can therefore better relate to us.
It makes sense to cut all of the new teachers instead of the those tenured because they have regualtions about that which makes it harder to cut those who have tenure.
Just because you like a teacher does not mean it is qualification to say that cuts are bad just to save those who you like.
I hope their are no cuts in your class, but what other options are their?
kids and their protests.
You are probably not gonna accomplish anything. You, as a student, decide who stays and who goes? How old are you?
Leave this to the grown ups it's not like the administrators want to do this, they don't like it either you're just making their job that much harder.

We aren't making their job that much harder. Our school district is a but more corrupt than that; it's not like our superintendent really cares. It's not his job being cut. Also. it's actually normal everyday citizens of our city making the decision.
We're a bit more passionate than that about this. If we did have to, we'd probably go to Lansing (the capital) if we had to.
" It's funny that you guys stopped protesting because they asked to go to the auditorium. I don't even know what protesting means anymore haha "Actually, the principal came and everybody ran. Except for a few people, who had to explain the permit stuff to us. They just had us all go to the auditorium so that we were all on the same level.

Although you may not accomplish anything by doing this. It's your intentions that count.
But you also have to look at this from the administrators position. He probably has a lot of information regrading on how the teachers grade and how much the students are actually learning. Although these teachers may be really nice and all, on average those are the teachers that actually educate the children the least. Although that may not be true in your case it's certainly a possibility and as the administrator the quality of the education is more important than how much fun the teacher may be.
" It's funny that you guys stopped protesting because they asked to go to the auditorium. I don't even know what protesting means anymore haha "That's a good point.
" @damnboyadvance: I mean if you ever go back, like I went back to Utah to visit my old junior high school teachers and I went to see all the nice ones and well.... they weren't all to nice anymore... "Yeah, I understand you. But chances are they won't be mean while I'm visiting them.
" @baconbits33 said:You better get used to those bitchy teachers, they prepare you most for life. i've been in college for three years and i have had about 4 professors who "related" to kids enough to make their TA hold help sessions." ummm You do realize that those same "teachers that are nice to the kids, and do their jobs at the same time" are in about 3-5 years turn into those "older, bitchier teachers". Also high school is a complete joke compared to college on a difficulty level. My major is Mechanical Engineering and the tests are insanely hard, and the professors don't give a fuck.
I'm pretty sure protesting in schools was made constitutional by Tinker v. Des Moines, so I think their comment about you needing a permit is a lie.
As long as you aren't disrupting learning, you aren't doing anything wrong, and they have no right to punish you.
I respect you guys for protesting this.
This is what they said to us when we protested a proposed budget cut back when I was in high school a long, long, long time ago. Well not long ago, but it's been 10 years. Anyway, after they said this they then went and axed most of the young teachers and anyone who wasn't tenured along with the entire tech department, auto tech, and half the art department. Then to save even more money they brought the disturbed special needs kids out of the special facilities they had been in to treat their needs and into the school where they transformed the tech/art wing literally into a prison cell block for these kids. Then the auto tech department became storage, the principal, superintendant and everyone on the board got big fat raises, and the sports teams got new uniforms and equipment, which they kept getting every year despite the fact that we never had any descent coaches and lost damn near every game in everything." kids and their protests. You are probably not gonna accomplish anything. You, as a student, decide who stays and who goes? How old are you? Edit: The moral of the story is education is a business too and things don't change.
why do younger teacher deserve not to be laid but the older do it is their job to. And did he say you needed a permit to protest ? That does not make sence and it defenetly does not stop most protestors!
" why do younger teacher deserve not to be laid but the older do it is their job to. And did he say you needed a permit to protest ? That does not make sence and it defenetly does not stop most protestors! "I guess it would be considered public property, which means we legally have to get a permit. It's the law, sir.
" It makes sense to cut all of the new teachers instead of the those tenured because they have regualtions about that which makes it harder to cut those who have tenure."Some of the worst professors I've had are tenured. They can pretty much do whatever they want and they know they won't be disciplined. My ancient literature professor was always condescending and when we had to interpret meanings of certain parts of say, The Illiad, we couldn't make a point and then support it. There was only one answer to everything, you were either right or wrong, you weren't aloud to interpret it anyway other than her way. Fuck that, I say.
And my old 3 Dimensional Design professor was the only architect who was teaching the entry level class, and as such required an offensive amount of detail be put into our work. He gave us work that would make graduate students squeal in terror. Oh but it's okay, because he taught Gwen Stefani, so he's some big shot. (Yeah Gwen Stefani attended my university shortly before forming No Doubt.) I had to take the class over again, with a different professor, and it was far easier and more interesting, and educational than the crap I had to put up with the first time I took that class.
Fuck tenured teachers.
As for budget cuts, yeah we've been having problems at our school too. But what I always found funny was how students would protest the cuts but would never provide any adequet alternatives. >.> It's the same all over.
Bottom line, if you're gonna protest about something involving economics, you better have a better solution, otherwise there's no point to protesting.
" I just read back to your original post, what do you mean by recess, what grade are you in? "Well, not recess but something like a break time.
