@deadpancakes: I was born with asthma but I grew out of it around 16 or 17 thankfully. I remember always having a more strongly negative opinion about the habit because of my former condition. I don't really look down on certain pipe smoking or other things but smoking actual over the counter cigarettes when there are no doubts as to what it does to your body and everything around you kind of blows my mind.

When I was a kid and started smoking I used to steal cigarettes from my parents. When I was old enough, I was used to their brand and kept smoking them. Over the years I've tried different brands, while in college I smoked whatever my group of friends smoked because it was easier to share cigarettes among friends when we didn't all complain about this brand or that brand. It usually ended up being the cheapest and least offensive brand at the time. When I smoke, not very often anymore, I have settled on Belmonts. They aren't very expensive and they aren't that strong.

I started smoking, because I was young and stupid, and I was trying to be cool. Back in the mid nineties when I started every kid was doing it, I was desperate for friends and any way to fit in.

Believe it or not, there are those of us that don't care about the potential side effects. Why should I not do something I like when I could die tomorrow in a car accident or be diagnosed with some other cancer that was unrelated to smoking?

I've tried almost every version available. I've settled on Djarum Blacks for dessert/specialish occasions (since the djarum supers have gotten harder to find since govt regs) and kool shorts for the regular mainly since a guy I used to work with smoked them mainly and I haven't found a better menthol. I don't smoke regulars often unless on sale or given to me. I really like cloves but those are getting harder and harder to find just because govt doesn't allow clove "cigs" but they allow clove "mini cigars". Ugh. Same thing but different wrapping. So pointless, just let me enjoy myself.

Ran into an old friend the other day. Hadn't seen him for like 5 years. He smoked back then, but it still came as a total surprise when he now lit up a cigarette. It was like watching an episode of Mad Men.

@joshwent: I didn't think you were being snide or superior, at all. I just tend to always come off fairly defensive when I write. That just comes from being into punk and metal when I was a teen, and growing up in a really small town where every conversation I had was an argument about how I was a "devil worshipper",lol. I was just trying to get the point across that quitting is much more than just not doing it anymore, which you clearly understand.

And, thank you, good sir, for thanking me! I truly appreciate your civility!

But, as you said, enough of us derailing the forum.

Peace.

@tehbull: My God, I love Djarum Blacks. The mini cigars just are not really the same, and thanks to the feds, the only place I can find to buy them is over the internet, from Indonesia. I haven't had one since 2010, but would gladly drop the Pall Mall's and never touch them again if Djarum Blacks were readily available.

Damn man, you might have inadvertently convinced me to order some from overseas.

If my credit card gets ripped off, or customs intercepts my smokes, I'm blaming you, lol!

@samael2138: I ordered internet cigarettes before. It's perfectly fine. I was able to get a carton of Morlboros for $18. They were made in Sweden or Germany (I can't remember), but they got shipped from Ukraine. It was a pretty good deal. They tasted a little stale, but you can't really beat $2 a pack in the end unless you roll your own.

I wonder if you can roll your own clove cigarettes. I personally hate them as it smells like (and I imagine tastes like) potpourri. When I rolled my own cigarettes, it only cost me about $3 per 20 and the tobacco was so much more flavorful. A box of like 200 paper tubes with filters is only like $5 and then you just need to get a machine to do it which isn't that expensive. If you are interested in trying it, I suggest getting the $50+ machines that are heavy and metal. The small plastic ones are shitty. I know because I own both.

EDIT: Quick note. If you live in California, the best place to buy your tobacco is outside the country because all other states send your information back to CA so they can tax you. http://www.boe.ca.gov/sptaxprog/tax_rates_stfd.htm#5

It's shitty, but if you don't want a bill, go outside the country. The real catch is the tax non-cigarette items.

Started with player's light reg, because that's what my old man smokes. Moved over to du mo's, because that's what my aunt smoked. Then I flip flopped between export gold and red for a while. Smoked matinee's for a while. Then my dad started going to the reserve and getting putter's and DK's. At some point I was smoking those awful bootleg cigarettes that came in the giant baggies. Those were some dark times... But they were like 15$ a carton. Went back to export red for a while but the prices got way too ridiculouse, like 13$ a pack. Now I smoke macdonald's which taste okay I guess and are about 16$ for 2 packs at some places. I just went in to way too much detail about my smoking history, now I feel like a sack of shit.

@tycobb: I was reading some post on the site I'm thinking of ordering from, and now my main concern is customs. Since the Djarum Blacks were specifically banned, apparently customs will occasionally confiscate them. People were saying its pretty rare, but there's still a chance. Seeing as a carton of Blacks from their site is only $23.00, compared to the $43 I pay for smokes, I think its worth the risk.

I've rolled my own before. Its more a question of finding a rolling tobacco I like. The only loose tobacco you can buy around here is Bugler, and its pretty terrible. No need for a machine, I roll em by hand, Pulp Fiction style. I've got quite a bit of experience rolling, though.

I had no idea they did that in Cali. That sucks. I'm in the middle of Texas, so no worries there.

@tycobb: No, I believe it but with car accidents or plane crashes the chances are pretty low that you would be in one OR even astronomically lower that it would be fatal. Cigarette smoking does not have those odds. Personally, I don't care as its not my lungs that are rotting but cigarette smoking effects more than just the people who do it. However, if the reason to do it "who cares, I could die from x, y, z" then you might as add Russian roulette on the weekends and ordering your bottled water from a Mexican tap source if "beating the odds" is your thing.

@sammo21: I'm a smoker, and also the only survivor of a fatal car crash. I was technically dead for a couple minutes, and the entire front of my skull, from my eyebrows to the top of my head, had to be surgically reconstructed. The other two people in the car weren't so lucky. One was killed instantly, the other died on the way to the hospital.

The odds really aren't that astronomical.

I never said anything about "beating the odds" so don't put words in my mouth. I think you have been looking for a fight since your original questions of "Why?" after it was already asked and many posts answering it, so I am just going to end it here and say I believe you either misinterpreted my post or you just don't comprehend what I was saying.

Interesting. So I guess I was right then. Seems like most people just smoke what's around and don't really hunt for a brand.

I quit smoking about 6 months ago. I miss it. I found my brand by buying a different one every time and eventually ended up switching between the Marbleolololz 27s and Basic Lights. because what the fack does it matter?

I'd say just roll your own like you're in a western. Or quit.

I don't smoke, every once and awhile a thought passes through my mind about how I think smoking looks cool (for no real reason). I know my smoking would be almost entirely cosmetic so I would choose the one with the coolest looking box. It's fun too, every once and awhile I buy one of those disposable nicotine-free candy flavored e-cigarettes just so I can mindlessly blow "smoke" around the room.

@cornbredx:

So it's pretty much habit?

It gives you a light head buzz. I used to smoke while at University, almost every weekend i'd have a couple cigarettes, when you're drunk having a cig gives you a nice buzz, makes you feel week i'd only smoke when I drank. Weird I never got addicted, I still very rarely will have a smoke maybe one cigarette every month if even that, but I never really crave it.

@sammo21: Yeah, I used to go out with somebody who was a pretty heavy smoker.

I remember once she had this fancy pack that wasn't her normal over the counter ones, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I felt like I wasn't choking.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but you just have to try different tobaccos and find one that has a good taste and smell and complements your favorite drink. I like to smoke Muriels, either coronellas or magnums. They're smooth, and affordable.

I also smoke a LOT of pipe dope. Don't touch that shit, it will fuck you up believe me.

@samael2138: Ugh I've been so tempted to do the online buying thing but I've been held over by the Walgreens near here selling the Blacks mini-cigars. I can still find a couple places in Chicago where the smoke shops sell the other brands laws excluded, because America. Also the fact that the law was never passed and they haven't recouped yet is frustrating. If you're ever successful with the on-line buying deal let me know where you went so I can try.

Also now that Rahm wants us to have the highest cigarette taxes in the nation is screwing me over. $10 for a pack of Pall Malls really should be a crime. Internet help me please.

I don't smoke, but if I DID, I would probably try to find some viceroys because of this song:

Loading Video...

Those or probably some type of menthol because I'm curious as to how that would feel.

As far as cigarillo brands (for you know what), I'm a fan of grape swishers :P they're classic

I only smoke on occasion, but I found my brand pretty easily. I just ended up with menthols. The first things I ever smoked were black and milds and menthols ended up being the obvious step from there.

And Newports because its the king of bad cheap menthols.

To answer the question of why, I smoked a Black and Mild after my first real breakup and it was alright. I smoked like 3 more times over the next two years, then when I started drinking more I started smoking a little more (this is in college). I've probably bought less than 10 packs of cigarettes in my entire life, and at this point I bum cigarettes occasionally at work when I'm stressed (or just want to hang out with a smoking co-worker / get a break, cause otherwise you get no breaks) and I visit a cigar bar about once every two months. I like the taste. Most people think I'm weird because I rarely smoke but I smoke down to the filter, but I mean its just what I've always done. I don't think it'll ever become a habit (at least while I'm living at home anyways) because I don't like buying cigarettes cause I give half of them away and my mom would disown me if she knew I had smoked cigarettes before.

Maybe the government put such high taxes on sigs so that dumbasses can't buy as much anymore to fuck their lungs and bladder up, and to deter any new smokers. It isn't just the nicotine you're addicted to, a lot of undisclosed chemicals and compound accompany that nicotine hit.

You just might come to realize after chemotherapy for the lung cancer, that expanded your life expectancy with only 3 months...that just maybe smoking wasn't worth it. You were always confident cancer wouldn't get you, untill you found yourself diagnosed with stage 3 (or 4) lung cancer. "How's that possible?", you asked the doctor, in disbelief. Most lung cancer are diagnosed very late since it's a stealthy cancer, by the time you visit the doctor, you're already dead. Or you might come to realize it after experiencing bladder cancer, one of the worst cancers in existence. Or leukemia. A lot of smokers know the hazards of smoking, but don't take it seriously. Just google lung emphysema, those will be your lungs in 20-30 years. They all curse their smoking addiction before succumbing to it, while their family watches them helplessly as they die a painful death.

Trust me, even if you yourself don't care for your own health, don't let your loved ones experience losing someone to a smoking addiction.

I smoke Regal King Size. I chose them cos my brothers smoke em.

I would hear them say "20 Regal King Size" when buying them for so long that I assumed they were the best. It's also the reason I smoke today.

I did have a bit of a scare about 10 years ago where I was walking down the street smoking and suddenly I couldn't breathe. I had to stop and take some really deep gulps of air. The rest of that day I didn't touch any. Next day I started again.

@agnosticjesus: That's how I got into Belmonts.

First cigarette I ever had, and although I've tried others (mostly due to price - Belmonts are $12 a pack! *Canada*), I've stuck with ol' Bellys.

It helps that Belmont also happens to be the name of a badass vampire killer.

No, the reason the government puts high taxes on cigarettes is because it's one of the few things they can get away with taxing heavily. Every time there is talk of a fast food or soda tax (which also should deter unhealthy habits) people lose their shit, because those things don't have the same stigma as smoking.

I just quit cigarettes, meaning I haven't had one in four days, but I really really like Camel Turkish Royals.

I definitely just started because I had friends with cigarettes all the time, and it was an excuse in college to step outside of the dorms with my other friends and talk for a while, get a change of scenery. It's been like two years now since I started so I figured it's a good idea to try to quit before it becomes my lifestyle

It'll be a little while longer before I quit the other type of smoking

Started with GV because I was like thirteen and that was the common bacci, then I moved onto delicious Amber Leaf which I still smoke now.

I'd smoke anything though, not really fussed like that. Well, other than straights - straights are fucking disgusting.

Just try different brands, bum cigs off other smokers or offer to trade. Most people are usually pretty cool about giving you one or talking about their brand. I smoke socially when I feel like it and got introduced to different brands from friends: davidoff from russian friends, american spirit from hipsters, dunhills from brits, etc. My favorites are the Dunhill Reds, they are smooth, strong, and extremely aromatic and tasty. If you're a chick you can go for menthols.

@sammo21: What blows my mind is how naive you are about pipe smoking... You may not be inhaling it the smoke, but you're still putting yourself at risk for oral cancer anywhere you have contact with the smoke. Especially when the goal of cigar and pipe smoking is to enjoy the flavor of the tobacco and the smoker may hold the smoke in longer for that reason. And by other things, what do you mean?

@trafalgarlaw: People like you who think the moral high ground is to control what others do with their own bodies really nauseate me.

I only smoke a handful of times a year when I want the nicotine kick. The brand makes no real difference to me because I wouldn't be able to tell anyway.

I smoked L&M reds for like 5 years because that was the first brand I kinda liked. Then I switched to this swedish thing called snuff and I don't hate myself anymore. Snuff is like small teabags of nicotine which you put under your upper lip for 30-120 mins. The amount of nicotine is also much stronger than in smokes so I can actually get a small buzz from time to time. Sure, now I'm stuck with this snuff instead, but I'm not destroying my lungs anymore.

@e30bmw: Ah yes, I stand corrected. I was under the assumption that snus is called snuff in English. But looking further into it I realize I am wrong. The historic thing called snuff isn't Swedish. But the modern thing called snus is definitely a Swedish thing.

Oh god, it works.
