There are a few quotes that make their way into my conversations more times than I'm ready to admit.
the one that's currently stuck in my head is "be the change you want to see in the world," mohandas gandhi
it's super cheesy, i know, i can't help it. some ideas are just more useful in more than one context i guess
does anyone else have one of those quotes/ everyday phrases that they recycle with wild abandon?
Quotes that stick in your head
After a wee bit of Wikipedia-ing, my favorite quote comes from Martin Niemoller, who said:
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
However, I like it not for its meaning, but because it becomes the best mad lib when applying it to any oppressive situation regarding inanimate objects:
"When they came for the video games, I didn't speak out because I wasn't video game".
Apply liberally.
"The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.” - Christopher Hitchens
I've been on the Bioshock binge lately. So during conversation lately I've realized I've quoted, "Would you Kindly" multiple times now.
@CH3BURASHKA: When they came for the lesbian porn, i didn't speak out because i wasn't lesbian porn. Oh God, I'll be doing this for days.
"I wasn't sure how long I could sustain the effort without breaking in two. It was as though the only thing holding my body together was my one burning desire to be better than Kakarot. At times I thought I was losing my mind. Why wasn't I able to obtain what Kakarot had obtained?! It didn't make any sense. It was infuriating...and it was my fury that kept me alive."
"We have flowing through our veins, the blood of a warrior race."
"Man cannot rebuild himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor."
Guess which one of these isn't a Vegeta quote.
This is the greatest, most inspirationally impactful line I've ever heard..... And it's from a rapper..... But it's the deep truth:
"Everybody dies but not everybody lives," by Drake...... Tell me that ain't true. So true that it makes you just wanna grab hold of your life and get the best out of it. Its done that for me and everytime I slip up, I try to remember that line. :)

Vegeta was never that poetic. Also he could give a tuppenny fuck about "Man".
"You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you cannot pick your friend's nose."
or something a little more related to my profession:
"Archaeology is the search for fact, not truth. If it is truth you are looking for, Dr. Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall." - Indiana Jones
"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life." -John Lennon
"A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people." -JFK
"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move." -Captain America
''War, war never changes'' - the one and only Ron Pearlman
''Without a plan, there's no attack. Without attack, no victory'' - Curtis Armstrong
"The mind is restless and difficult to restrain, but it is subdued by practice." - From the Bhagavad Gita
"I mean, they say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time"
-Banksy
Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven.
My three favorites are:
It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them. -Mark Twain
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -Winston Churchill
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -Albert Einstein

Here's the first one:
Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay
To mould me man? Did I solicit thee
From darkness to promote me?
That's from Paradise Lost, by John Milton. Another random one:
Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.
Courtesy of Ernest Hemingway. I have a good list so far.
"The bad times are what get you from one happy photograph to the next..." A quote from the film 'Just Married' and yes, I did use it in my speech at my wedding, but I had been with my wife for nearly 8 years at that point so I think it applies!
I was gonna recite the speech from the beginning of Transformers, but I think it might not be appropriate for this thread, and may also lead to a complete write out of the script for that film from memory...

"The devil's greatest trick was convincing the world he doesn't exist." - Wherever it's from. I'm still not a believer, but it's thoughtworthy, and really creepy.
Sounds like something out of the Screwtape Letters. It's actually from The Usual Suspects (who probably took it from Charles Baudelaire)!
Here's one of my favourites:
"You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength."
- General Iroh (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
For some reason I always remembered that one line from Max Payne:
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
Also I used to spout off Gray Fox' greeting from MGS all the time:
Neither enemy nor friend. I am back from a world where such words are meaningless.
Cheesy, but it's Metal Gear, so it's fantastic.
Then of course there's that line Barney says sometimes when you get him to follow you:
Roger that, let's run like hell.
Oh video games of my childhood/adolescence, they were all so great.
From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God in his wisdom put upon this earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet's infinite organisms. And that right is ours against all challenges. For neither do men live nor die in vain.
"Get over here!"

How you know the Great Mouse Detective boggles my mind.
Be who you are and say what you feel: because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"
-High fidelity
"The strongest way to fight against Piracy is to have a business model that makes sense and is easy to understand and use. The more restrictions that you throw up on files and videos- all you're doing is inspiring people to throw up the middle fingers and say: "I can click four buttons over here and get it for free" You have to be easier and more convenient than free... You have to compete with free"

On a more serious note:
"It is only those who hope to transform human beings who end up by burning them, like the waste product of a failed experiment."
We rode on the winds of the rising storm,
We ran to the sound of the thunder;
We danced among the lightning bolts,
And tore the world asunder
