Far as I'm concerned, you an use whatever word you like to describe whatever thing you want to...so long as that thing ain't another man's country, then shit about to get real.

@BRNK said:

Some of you guys are not thinking this through very clearly. I know you'd like to pretend that words are devoid of meaning, power and history, but they aren't. Ever been bullied by being harassed? Ever known someone who took their life because the verbal abuse they got (for no fault of their own) convinced them they had no value? Ever consider that while you may be an intelligent person who judges others on your first-hand experience of them, an awful lot of people in this world are dumb and impressionable and by perpetuating racial stereotypes you're making it more likely those dumb people will act on them? Is that your direct fault? No.... but do you really want to play a part in keeping other people down just to maintain your entitlement to hurtful words?

Just think about this shit outside of your bubble for a minute.

That's only if your using those words to specifically insult someone. And if it's so offensive, then someone can lay the motherfucker out instead of running around like a bunch of little fucking kids and crying "Teacheeeer! He said a word I don't like!" Grow the fuck up.

Yeah, you sound really grown right now.

"yea instead of being a BITCH, punch that motherfucker!" Damn, you're so edgy and cool.

People just need thicker skin. Most "racism" is really just a joke that someone didn't like and the person telling the joke isn't actually a racist; just someone who doesn't think. However, "racism" is also stupid because it is full of double standards; I can be called a "cracker" (no, it is not something you eat), but if I were to call them a "cotton picker" back, I would be considered a racist. Granted, that is an extreme example, but you see my point.

Most racism doesn't actually exist anymore except for a very small percentage (idiot skinheads and backwoods KKK sects). Mechanics aren't going to rip you off because you are black/asian/mexican, but because you either have an expensive car or are a woman. Your service isn't going to suck because you aren't the same race as the waiter. 99% of cops did not actually pull you over because you weren't white. It's just something that is stupid that will never go away because people don't know the difference. They are the ones that are actually racist because they immediately think something bad happened because of their race, when in fact it had nothing to do with it. It's the perfect scapegoat and the easiest way to throw the attention off them and onto someone else.

I say a lot of bad things without actually meaning it. I can say nigger to a black man, but i never mean it as an insult.

I sometimes wish i didnt say things like this though. Its mostly cause i cant really be the one in my group of friends and family that is the only person that is anti racism.

Every time i try the " we are people" line they just laugh at me and call me silly. " This country is our country, send them back where they belong"

I am ashamed to say that a lot of Norwegians think and act like this, i may act like it in public with friends to make them like me ( and i really dont like myself for it ) but i dont actually hate or dislike other people from other cultures or races in my country.

Most of the time I see racist stuff these days is when people are trying to be funny. I am more offended that stuff is not funny and just creates an awkward situation. I know a guy that will say it is OK because people can make jokes about him being Irish. Really not the same and I really don't need to hear more unfunny racial jokes.

Racial jokes are tired and not funny. Exibit A - Carlos Mencia. If you think Carlos Menicia is funny, you should go back to school until you become intelligent. I saw a commercial for his dumb show making jokes that Asians can't drive. I haven't heard that stupid meme since 1994. Still not funny.

So I am really not offended by racial jokes. I just think you're not funny. You are not edgy. Racial jokes are as old as the labels on the different races. Stop it before you create enough unfunny to kill funny forever.

Any kind of joke can be funny depending on who you're talking to. :| I have friends who I constantly use offensive slang and insults towards and it's funny to us. I have other friends who don't really appreciate when I call them awful things.

@aurahack: Man I wish I could be that easily entertained. I could just put Carlos Mencia DVDs on repeat and be entertained forever. Maybe I should smash my head a few 1000 times to have the sufficient brain damage to find it funny.

Not understanding the connotations of certain words makes you ignorant, but not a racist. Understanding the connotations and using the words anyways doesn't make you a racist, but it makes you an asshole. Using the words because of the connotations makes you a racist.

So basically if you are using the words that people find "racist, sexist. homophobic or any combination of the afore mentioned" as you put it, then you are one of the above.

Man, you must be the life of parties.

Funny, also, that I find Carlos Mencia to be pretty unbearable.

On the internet we are our words. If your words are sexist, homophobic, racist, then you'll be perceived as such. It's incredibly simple. There's no pride in creating a bad atmosphere, making people feel uncomfortable and then going "fuck em!". If that's your whole thing, then at least don't be surprised when people peg you for an asshole.

ahh great, a bunch of 18-25 white males are saying that 'Racism isn't a problem' again...

Whilst this doesn't make you racist, ignoring the issue and saying that racist remarks have no meaning or effect makes you incredibly, incredibly ignorant.

Carlos Mencia is bottom of the barrel comedy that uses race.

How about more subversive comedians who tackle race? How about Dave Chappelle? How about, who I consider the greatest living and performing comedian today, Louis CK? How about the late great Patrice O'Neal? Are you putting their musings on race at the same level as Carlos Mencia's?

Hell, then you might as well putDuke Nukem Forever on the same qualative level of Portal since they're both in First Person.

Choosing teh stupidest, lowest common denominator example to prove your point rather defeats it, no?

As a Hispanic male in white ass Gerogia I've had to deal with Confederate flag wearing assholes for several years. I'm normally okay with racist remarks considering I've had to deal with it for so long. I'd still ask people to keep it to themselves as I usually don't enjoy that kind of humor.

I'm rarely offended. I have a very awfully dark sense of humor. That said, I have come across people that actually believe in their "jokes" and I'll usually stay away from them after laughing at them (and not with them). But that said, I've heard a lot of terrible Mexican jokes that I could see offending someone other than myself. Like I said though, it depends on who it is/how its told.

As far as being offensive, I don't really use any racial slurs of any kind, but "motherfucker" "asshole" "son of a bitch" get tossed around like nobody's business when talking to friends. I'm sure I've offended some passers-by at least once (though I've never been told explicitly). Around strangers, I just keep my mouth shut. Cuz I'm shy.

Dave Chappelle made fun of the absurdity of racism which many people didn't get and just thought the joke was the cliché racist joke. It is one of the reasons he stopped his show. Menica copied his show but made the jokes the cliché race jokes. Most people who do racist jokes aren't at the higher level of making fun of absurdity of sterotypes. Most of the time the joke is the cliché and it is not funny unless you are stupid.

Not familiar with Louis CK or Patrice O'Neal so I can't comment on them.

there is to many easily offended people now a days. i was banned for saying stuff like "those people are pissed off we call them violent and crazy, so they go out and riot and destroy property?" was called racist over that. i got called hitler at work once, because i signed a petition here in arizona supporting a bill about harsher penalties for illegal immigrants. its just insane. i feel like the only way to not be considered racist is to hate white people sometimes. but truthfully, i dont give a shit. people that raelly know me know im not. my first girlfriend was a black chick. damn she was hot.... oh .... *cough* anyways. have a good day.

Well I'm a white male in Mexican ass California and I've had to deal with being called all kinds of names growing up. Being called a pinche wedo all day is one thing, but having a general hate directed towards you can really hurt after a while. It's that look of disgust when they look at me like I'm some atrocious beast that hurts the most. Especially when you're in a no different situation than anybody else.

I'm Native American and I have dealt with people's stereotypes. I don't mind though, because they're usually badass ones like "Talking to Nature, Owning Casinos, Tomahawking People to the Face."

I don't care. I think it's awesome if anything.

Although I'm reluctant to get involved with a debat about racism (its as bad as talking about religion or politics) having first hand experience of racism I say it is 'a thing' and it is hurtful. you can't tell an eight year old to not mind the naming calling the threats of violence or even random spitting. You can't tell me that even after years of not having it happen against me then suddenly encountering it again in my late twenties didn't surprise the hell out of me it also brought up a lot of old wounds. Walk a mile in any other persons shoes and I think most people will find even a trip to your local supermarket an eye opening experience.

Words are words, man. That's it. People that take offense to them are really just looking for a way to be victimized so they have attention.

Of course, depending on what words you use, the opposite could be true. Most people have it embedded in their brains that when you use that "N" word, you're doing so with malice and intent to harm. That's where the racism lies. So long as you aren't saying that stuff from a place of hate, and instead doing so from humor, then go right ahead (of course, mind what you say around strangers, since they don't know how you use those words).

Racism is kind of a blame on both sides. It takes one person to be racist, and another to call them out. Sometimes it's valid (Like I said, using slurs out of a place of hate), and sometimes it's taken too seriously (That South Park episode about the town flag springs to mind, I forget the name of it). Maybe if we all stopped caring what color your skin was, we'd be a better society for it, but that won't happen for a couple centuries more.

I see your point but i don't agree with people being offended are trying to be victimized for attention. I feel these type of arguments always go off base. Real racism is thinking you are better than another race, putting that believe to action is racism. Saying words that offended people is just that, even in that context crude comments coming from hate or humor can sometimes be a fine line.

No matter the person being offensive is never cool and trying to hide behind the wall of "i just say what i feel" and 'I'm just joking" does not fly all the time. Even in joke you can hurt or offend people. I feel it comes down to just a personal judgement call. You know your friends and you know to not be a dick to strangers so it really comes down to what type of person you are.
