I live in Pennsylvania and am currently experiencing a monster thunderstorm. It got me thinking. Lots of people talk about rainy day activities - reading books, certain albums or movies that they return to.
Are there any (types of) games you return to when it's nasty outside? I for one am prepping to curl up with a DS, though I haven't picked a cart yet.
Rainy Day Games
Yeah, I'm in Maryland and we're getting the same storm. I don't have any specific games that I go to, but I had a power surge so I'm using my PSP at the moment.

I'm just chilling on my laptop watching netflix.

Anyways, I too tend to curl up with the DS when it's really bad out--especially since I can keep playing in case I lose power, which has happened several times in the past few months.
I'm in Brooklyn and we're getting the tail of that storm. As for rainy day games, I find some sort of RPG is always good or an adventure game.
Usually sports and puzzle games feel right during a thunderstorm.
Then again, any video game feels right during a thunderstorm.
In my personal opinion, I have this urge to play games with rain or water in them. Two of my favorites are Zelda: Wind Waker and Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Another good rainy day game is an Animal Crossing title. Also, thunder can add ambient noise and "effect" to a game like Resident Evil remake/Zero that is pretty cool and makes them funner to play/scarier. Especially at night during a thunderstorm. Or Silent Hill, something of that nature if you're into those types of games.
But I think a "rainy day game" is simply any game that you find both fun and relaxing or fits with a rainy day kind of feel.
I live in Phoenix, AZ so rainy days don't come often! but when they do it feels extra special. In Phoenix, rain is celebrated like a holiday!
Ahh, it's about 75 here with a nice breeze blowing in the North Bay.
But I'd say just about any video game during a thunderstorm.
@ATrevelan: @KaosAngel: Indeed, King of Prussia. Home of that big ass mall.
Happy to see I'm not the only one who turns to portable games when the weather outside makes my being portable sound like a bad idea.
I live in Fl and it rains 4/7 out of the week, so there isn't any real restrictions on any activity.
Ex. I just played soccer in the rain yesterday and that was loads of fun.
I usually play Silent Hill 2 if it happens to be raining outside. Maybe a little bit of Call of Duty 4 as well. Sometimes a little bit of Twisted Metal.
I tend to play my teenage favorites when we get a terrible storm here. I'll usually play one of the PS1 Final Fantasies, or maybe some sort of RPG on the DS if we don't have power.
I also usually have a couple of games in my backlog that I haven't played much. I tend to call those my "rainy day" games because I boot them up most often when I'm stuck indoors due to weather or other circumstances. Where I come from (Montana), it's not so much the summer storms as it is the winter ones that affect us.
I usually like to play something creepy like F.E.A.R on my pc, the storm outside adds to the atmosphere. Those storms you all are having probably came from my direction, lol.
Interesting to see that most people seem to prefer to play scary games on a rainy day. For some reason rain makes me think of Wind Waker, which is entirely light-hearted.
I'll you can't pull some friends and family together to play Risk (as in the board game), then Civilization: Revolution -- I'm sorry, Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution -- is a good choice.

" @astrotriforce: wind waker on a really rainy torrential downpour day would be amazing "Hahaha, indeed it was! :D
Strategy and puzzle games do it for me. Though sometimes a storm inspires me to hook up and play older systems.
Found this picture on Google and I think it's actually the store right up the street from me. Weird.
The same ones that I play when it's sunny outside. Although if the storm causes a power out then I would have dug out what ever handheld I had at the time. Then shortly remember why I never play the dam thing. Assuming there was natural light I would most likely just read a book or wait for the power to come back on.
" @astrotriforce: Absolutely! But I love being two hours north of there and getting crazy monsoons in the summer. : ) "WOOT!

" Rainy Day Games is a business near me that sells trading cards and other types of games. Totally thought you made a thread about it.
