The Martian - 5/5

One of the best movies I have seen this year.

A great well paced story that is engaging from start to finish. Watney (Damon's character) is a like-able character with a level of 'smart-assness' that isn't overbearing.

My only gripe is the ending felt a little to over dramatized/hollywood-ized which I hear is different to how the book ends, and before you ask, No I have not read the book.

Last movie I watched, in the theaters, was Spectre. Last film I watched on Netflix was Last Shift.

Spectre was fun and nowhere near the corny Bond affair that some reviews and word of mouth would have lead me to believe. The twist was cool and since I didn't really look up spoilery posts ahead of time I wasn't "prepped" for any of it. The performances are perfectly fine across the board but what the film could have used was a bit more editing. I do find it kind of lame that this is the second of third time we see the 00 program in jeopardy of being closed down. We get it...its 2015 and we need to be cynical about everything. This really does wrap itself up as the end of the Craig Bond films, but I'm willing to bet we see him come back one more time. 4/5 stars; its no Casino Royal or Skyfall but it does serve as a nice addition to the franchise.

Last Shift was an independent horror film about a police officer's watch over a police station on its final night. They've build a new, better station and a hazmat crew needs to come in and remove hazardous materials and waste before the station can be fully abandoned. What transpires is a ghost filled night with the viewer and the protagonist unsure if what's happening is real or if its merely in her head. I thought the movie was fine...definition of a 3/5 with some of my opinion skewed by the horribly predictable ending.

Last movie I watched was Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. I've been trying to actually watch all his work.

Spirited Away is a movie that impressed me most with it's imagination. The designs on the spirits and entities at work were evocative, colorful, and so very animated. The characters were realistic (as far as spirits can be), and some were downright lovable. Especially that Kamaji, I love that spidery boiler slave. Chihiro's arc through the movie was paced well, with the movie giving her enough time to breathe as she grew. The back 9 of the movie became downright heartwarming, and I'm a big fan of charm and the redeeming of odd monsters. The end left me wanting to see more, and my sister and mother (people with no experience at all with japanese animation) both enjoyed it. I really liked it, 9.5 out of 10.

The Man from U.N.C.LE. 2/5.

very boring. not a lot happened. there wasn't even any fun spycraft really.

I liked "The Kingsman" is a very odd way. It was a bit goofy, and they did not build up the young spy enough as a character...but i liked it. I think it was more "James Bond" than the current BOND film.

Dragon Ball Z : Resurrection F.

Fun dumb fan-service movie if you're a Dragon Ball Z fan. The localisation seem to have taken some cues from Team Four Star since the dialog feels really natural and fun.

If you're a DBZ Fan : 4/5, if not probably 2/5.

Rock IV 5/5

I have been watching the Rocky movies with my girlfriend who has never seen them before. I think Rocky IV is the best in the series and I can't wait to watch creed (it's not out until January in the UK.)

A Fugitive From the Past

A very strong police procedural from Japan made in the mid-60's. It's about three hours, but it earns it through strong performances, nicely imagined characters and its subject matter. Rather than just being a moral play or a whodunnit, Uchida widens the scope, making it an examination of Japan's postwar troubles. A really compelling, multifaceted film.

Spectre, 4/5.

Almost as good as Casino Royale, better than Quantum of Solace of course but Skyfall remains the best. I don't know if this is the last Daniel Craig Bond film but it would be the perfect stopping point.

12 Angry Men 5/5

Incredible. Definitely ahead of its time; I'd say it works well as a companion piece to Serial Season One.

My biggest complaint is that the title is very misleading - only a handful of said men are actually irate :P

Was pretty awesome. Well shot and they didn't overdo it. It was often subtle and eerily quiet. Great film. Jeremy Renner was pretty good too.

Saw Mockingjay part 2 last night. I never read the books. I thought the first film was actually very very good on its own, but all the sequels have been less good, in line with the trend for YA adaptations to have pretty interesting first attempts, only to have the director shunted off in favour of someone who is going to be more workmanlike about it. Anyway, I'm digressing a bit. Mockingjay 2 was a significant uptick from part 1 which was a pretty boring slog really, but still with significant issues. There's some unfortunate plotting that made me feel that the whole middle third had just been spinning its wheels, getting Katniss from point A to B.

The split into 2 films for this final chapter was really mishandled I think. A Boring first installment, then a more exciting second installment that was rushed at the end when things were actually getting interesting. I think they should either have made a single, tightly plotted 3 hour film, or moved some of this film back into the first one, and expanded the last third a bit, maybe allow to go a bit political thriller. I also feel that the way they were split means that some characters get very little attention in part 1, so when we have to care about them in part 2 it's a little difficult for the film to give us that connection.

But there was some stuff I liked. Jennifer Lawrence seemed a little bit on autopilot, but a lot of the other actors gave really good performances - I thought the guy who played Peeta did well, Donald Sutherland allowed a little campy derangement in that really lifted some parts of the film, particularly the end. I thought the lady playing Katniss' tough lady sergeant did a lot to give her part some character. The music in this series has always been pretty effective.

3/5 seems about right really.

36th Chamber of Shaolin - 6/5

I have never watch a Shaw Brothers film as an adult, though I may have caught a smattering of them on Kung Fu Theater in the 80's.

I don't know what I've been doing with my life.

Training montages tend to be the best parts of martial arts movies, and almost the whole movie is a training montage.

A bunch of these movies are on Netflix now, I plan to watch some more. Though I don't know how it can top this one.

I saw Star Wars, and first I was kind of dissappointed that it was yet another Death Star and there were some cheesy lines, but now I really want to see the next one. There's still so many things left unclear like the Knights of Ren and wtf Luke has been up to, who Rey is and so on. I also saw Ex Machina again and Poe Dameron and General Hux acts a lot better on here I think.

The Eiger Sanction

Pretty terrible. The Outlaw Josey Wales pretty much came out of nowhere if you compare to Eastwood's previous 4 films as a director. This one just strikes me as an exercising of Eastwood's ego. Watch him rock climb, watch him flip a dude out a window, watch him romance a black woman named Jemima, watch him combat a gay villain who owns a rapist dog named Fa****.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – 3.5/5

+ New ensemble is amazing, new characters are interesting and multifaceted, fantastic sound and visuals.

- Terrible pacing (everything happens at lightspeed), too much fortunate randomness, stakes are immediately at 9000, a bit too much pandering with old characters.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens. 4/5

I liked everything in it. What i didn't like is what's not in it. Too many movies are too long but this one is the opposite. It could have used another 20 minutes worth of exposition and character and world building. Everything happens fast, too fast and often too conveniently. I hope there's an extended cut at some point. Still great fun and a solid foundation for the rest to come. Rey and Finn are fantastic leads.

The Revenant. 5/5

A real feel good movie for the whole family!

If you know exactly what you're getting into when you watch it and aren't immediately turned off by the premise it does what it sets out to do extremely well. I would bet on Emmanuel Lubezki winning the oscar for best cinematography for a 3rd year in a row. It's one of the most beautiful movie i've seen this year.

Hostel - 3/5

Can't remember if I've reviewed this one already. Eh. Either way, not much to say about it. Shallow, oddly likable gore flick that really wasn't all that gory in hindsight. Save for the famed eye cutting scene, it's surprisingly restrained given its reputation. (all relative, of course... it's still quite a bloody movie) Not a good movie, but I have a soft spot for it.

Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie - Five Bags of Popcorn/A Tube of Dream Cream

A lovely, thoughtful biopic telling us the true story of how Tim Heidecker and 'Rick Heinegeber were driven to ruin and decided to not only dig themselves back out, but to renovate a small town mall and bring joy to the community. With James Quall and David Lieber... uhh... Mintz as themselves, featuring cameos by such stars as Chef Goldblum, Jrangus C. Reillum, and not Jackie Chan. Truly the greatest film of the century. If you only see one film this year, throw that trash away, stop being a garbage boy, and watch this one instead. Bring somebody's dad. Make it a family night. You earned it.

The last movie I watched was actually "The Dead Pool", a Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry flick from '88. Forgettable movie with one absolutely unforgettable moment. You can find the clip on youtube easily but first, a little context.

First, this was a "Dirty Harry" movie and unlike some other movies of that genre, "Dirty" Harry Callahan did not deal in humor. More akin to Charles Bronson in the "Death Wish" series to say, Bruce Willis in the "Die Hard" series. I suppose one could argue that pointing a gun at someone and then querying of them, "do you feel lucky punk, well, do you?" indicates a sense of humor but I think it just indicates balls of steel.

Second, this was 1988 and Jim Carrey virtually unknown, Ace Ventura did not exist, nor did "In Living Color".

So, if you can, transport yourself back to 1988 and your favorite movie theater. Remember, you have never heard of Jim Carrey nor seen his comedic "stylings". You are watching an action movie that, so far, has delivered on it's promise of action annnnnddddd scene......

The Martian - Watched it for the second time. Even the second time that movie had me in full suspense. Oddly, it is a real feel-good movie. I got a smile on my face watching the clever humor, his positive attitude and all the effort to saving one man. Actually one of the best movies I've ever seen.

5 / 5

Me And Earl And The Dying Girl - It was alright. Really, really, incredibly cheap plot twist though. Not very special in any real way, but I didn't hate watching it. The girl was cute too. That helps.

Hitman: Agent 47. It was alright. Basically nothing like the games but then again I'm not sure on how you'd translate those into a movie. The action was good (which, honestly, was all I was in for), dialogue...not so much.

Still, it was fine. 4/7 (hahahseewhatIdidthere?).

Bone Tomahawk - 4/5: A thriller/horror western starting Kurt Russell alone gives this three stars. The support cast of Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox(possibly my favorite performance of his), and Richard Jenkins all give fantastic performances that elevate the movie further. I won't give much away, but the film has possibly the most disturbing scene I've ever seen in a movie.

Werewolves on a train. It was pretty lame but my God it had a great scene where this huge, intimidating werewolf is on the train and its the first time the people on board are confronted face to face with the monster and then the passengers just proceed to beat the ever loving shit out of it. fantastic.
