Bone Tomahawk - 4/5: A thriller/horror western starting Kurt Russell alone gives this three stars. The support cast of Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox(possibly my favorite performance of his), and Richard Jenkins all give fantastic performances that elevate the movie further. I won't give much away, but the film has possibly the most disturbing scene I've ever seen in a movie.

Bought this on a whim and watched in the other night. FANTASTIC movie all around. Excellent atmosphere with an unsettling vibe combined with memorable characters and great dialogue. And yeah...that kill scene. I've been a gore-hound since I was a child and I've seen some incredibly graphic stuff in my years. I really eat that shit up. THE scene in this film, though, is something that is profoundly fucked up. I don't think I'll ever get it out of my head. I mean, they don't shy away from ANY of it, and it looks so real, so props to the FX department. It's just brutal, man. I'd give the movie a 5/5. Loved it.

I've seen a few others recently.

Cooties. I was kind of let down by this. It's got a great cast and some genuinely funny moments, but after an excellent and gory intro that gets right to the meat of the story, the action slows down a lot in the middle. It's deceptively light on the campy gore for most of the movie, but it's got a few good moments. Rainn Wilson steals the show, by far. I'd say it's worth a single watch if you're into this type of dumb fun. 3/5

Predestination. A really unique and bizarre sci-fi/time travel movie with a twist that I had mostly figured out about half way through. However, I still got immense pleasure from seeing it play out, knowing that the movie actually went that far. It's got two really strong performances between Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook, too. If you're into high-concept sci-fi, it's certainly worth a look. 4/5

And then there's The Revenant. Holy shit, this movie is so damn good. It's one of the most intense and immersive films I've ever seen. It's plot is dead simple, which allows you really focus on the outstanding film making on display. Just breathtaking cinematography and direction and that pulls you into the action and feels very intimate. Leo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy are fucking acting powerhouses, too. I felt exhausted by the end of the film, but it's an incredible ride while it lasts. 5/5

Man from U.N.C.L.E. : B/B+

I really liked it, there was a good mixture of comedy and action even though the middle was a little slow. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer played well off each other. And it was definitely a Guy Ritchie movie, from the cinematography to the car scenes to the dialog, it just oozed his style. I understand why it didn't do very well but I'm still kind of bummed that there won't be a second one, I would have liked this to become a franchise.

The Revenant-4 Leo's out of 5 Tom Hardys. I loved it. It was visceral, beautifully shot, and perfectly acted. I want Leo to win an Oscar badly-always been a fan. But, I think Tom Hardy deserves one more for his role in this movie.

Star Wars: 3/5

I liked the new characters, but the pacing was really was really bad in spots. The movie was in too much of a hurry to get to the Han and Chewie Fan Service Hour to allow Finn and Rey to really breathe as characters. It also indulged the worst of JJ Abrams. Too much of the movie was "We''ll make it the same. But BIGGER!" It still managed to thrill me in spots, though and I appreciate the return to more practical special effects.

Overall, it was kind of the Dragon Age Inquisition of Star Wars movies. Not nearly as good as the originals but also way better than the prequels/sequels.

Spent so much of its time trying to be off-putting, it had nothing else to offer. It's nicely made, but it's vacuous, no matter how 'artful' its camera might try to be. But if you like weird sex, puking and body horror maybe it's worth a look?

The Hateful Eight 70mm: 8/10

Not Tarantino's best, but I didn't go into it expecting it to be. I got hyped for it because it was Tarantino doing another Western, and it worked on that level, even though I think Django is a better movie.

Honestly? It gets an extra point just for the whole experience. Like as a 20 year old, I've never ever experienced a movie in 70mm. I've never seen a movie that had an overture and an intermission, or one that had theater staff handing out programs as you walk in. That whole thing was way, way before my time and I'm super glad that Tarantino brought it back, even if I had to drive an hour to a theater I've never been to experience it.

Sort of enjoyed it more than I was expecting, maybe it was being a Goosebumps fan as a kid. Even if it was clearly aimed at teens, I enjoyed it's moments.

Infini

This movie really doesn't know what it wants to be. It should have been some enjoyable B-grade schlock, but took itself way too seriously. It also starts out like an Aliens ripoff and slowly degrades into some pretentious, art-house PoS. A barely coherent narrative and stupid, boring, pseudo-philosophical conversations drown this one in its own lame primordial ooze. The few actiony bits are tolerable. Really inconsistent 'science' as well if you're picky about that sort of thing.

Anomalisa: 10/10

The difference between a 9/10 and a 10/10 is something deeply personal, and the movie has to speak to you directly in order to do that. For me, this film does that perfectly.

The only hiccup in Anomalisa's immaculate pacing is the ending, and even then the film pulls it off. The only misstep is so minor--and I mean only--that it's easy to forget in comparison to the everything it does correctly.

The stop-motion is deeply human and expressive and flawless, not to mention the puppets are so realistic that it skips the uncanny valley entirely, except for the two occasions where it embraces it, and even that serves a purpose.

The scope of the film, despite taking place over a single day, is vast in the sense that no single detail feels unnecessary. Everything serves a distinct purpose, and serves that purpose with to the absolute best.

I don't want to ruin or overhype the movie, but the purpose and what the film does and says about the way we communicate with and understand each other speaks to me on such an incredibly basic way that I couldn't not love this movie. It probably won't speak to everyone, but even when it doesn't it's still an incredibly well craft piece of film. If you are lucky, or unfortunate, enough to be able to pick up what the film puts down, you're in for something that can and will fuck you up to the base of who you are.

The Martian - 5/5

I did not expect this to be perhaps my favourite science fiction movie in recent memory. An exciting and engaging story while still getting me super excited about space, our future in it, and the people trying to get us there. It felt less like a run of the mill tooth and claw survival story, and more almost a celebration of wit, ingenuity, and humanity.

Every phase of the movie was genuinely exciting to watch unfold. Seeing characters on Earth picking up on what Matt Damon's stranded cosmonaut Watney was trying to do on Mars in the early goings was especially fun, and a montage near the beginning of the third act was one of the most encouraging sequences I've seen in a movie in recent memory. Just lovely.

There are no smarmy villains, no heavy-handed romaticizing or cynical ramblings, no celestial interventions. It's a movie about a man stuck on Mars and the people who try to bring him back to Earth. It was also a lot funnier than I expected!

The last movie I (re-)watched completely was Inception. I'd still say that movie is a 5/5 despite some of the inconsistencies that I noticed on a second viewing. It just does such a great job in taking the every day concept of dreaming into crazy new directions while still, somehow, being believable on some level. Watching that movie, as crazy as it got sometimes, I actually believed that one day a technology like that might exist.

Good cinematography, good acting. Tom Hardy was great. Normally don't find Leonardo DiCaprio's acting that appealing, but I liked him in this. Thought it was pretty unevenly paced though(and edited), and found the writing quite boring.

Starwars 7: get a 7/10

It was entertaining, some things just made no sense and for me there was a bit too much remixing of old star wars material.

Seriously, now we have an even bigger planet destroying machine. THAT CAN HIT 4 PLANETS AT ONCE and drain a star!? But at the same time it still has >>1<< really obvious weak point while the whole planet was the weapon?

And the whole Rey just realizes she has jedi powers and immediately mindcontrols storm-trooper 007 and becomes a jedi master within half a movie didn't really work for me.

Lastly Finn just really didn't do it for me.

All in all: entertaining while watching at the time, enjoyment lessend somewhat while thinking back about it.

I am 100% with you on that. I did expect to like it (that's why I went to see it), but had no idea it would be my favorite space travel movie of all time. I honestly can't think of any space movie that beats it. Precisely because of the points you made. I also discovered I actually see it as a 'feel-good' movie. Seeing him... having fun almost, trying to survive is just fun. The crew interactions with the constant humor, NASA flipping it's shit on the decisions they need to make. It may sound stupid, but it's not just a great movie, it's also a great movie to watch. Whenever. In fact, I'm going to put it on right now.

The Hateful Eight

One of Tarantino's weaker films in my mind. It starts off fine enough, even if it is a bit slow-going. It builds an interesting relationship between inside and outside space, but abandons it pretty quickly. Once the bloodletting starts, the writing gets much weaker.

Would maybe make my top 3500.

Straight Outta Compton - 3/5

First thing, I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. For all its faults and overlong runtime, this was a slick and entertaining version of the history of NWA. But that's the rub... it was slick and entertaining, but almost to try to cover up the movie's oddities and glaring inaccuracies. For one, this is The Eazy-E Show. Which, y'know, fine, but NWA was more than Eazy-E. So why do Dre, Ice Cube, Yella and Ren (especially Ren) feel like two-dimensional supporting characters? Dre and Cube at least have their basics vaguely covered (most of it in winking single lines, like Cube writing Friday), but the others barely feel present for large swaths of the movie. I get that equal time given to every member would produce a 10 hour movie, but come on. Funny how the household names get all the screentime, but the others are one step above set dressing. And where the hell was Arabian Prince?

This movie also makes the classic biopic mistake of painting the protagonists as saints, relatively speaking. Let's just say I can't blame Dee Barnes for being pissed. On a lighter note, Snoop walking in and busting out Nuthin' But A G Thang off the top of his head was (unintentionally?) hilarious, and a prime example of the simplification throughout the movie.

I don't want to ride this movie too hard. It's not a documentary, it's a real-world event retold with entertainment in mind. And as far as that goes, it does entertain. Just do some reading after you see it to fill in all the gaps.

Blood simple.

Kind of low key for a coen brothers movie but you can definitely see a lot of the style and humor that they would develop in their later films. Even their most conventional movies are very unique and fun to watch.

I may not have actually *seen* it yet, but bear with me here:

Swiss Army Man: Everything/Everything

Daniel Radcliffe portrays a flatulent corpse with a postmortem erection. Basically, the movie seems to be Castaway, except with less volleyballs named Wilson and more farting boner corpses. I have come to understand that Radcliffe's character is at one point ridden about like a Jet Ski, using the only propulsion one could expect.

Again, I have not actually *seen* this, as it's still doing Sundance, but I think it's safe to say that the medium of film has been perfected here.

3/5. It was ok. It was entertaining and it was fun seeing old Star Wars aesthetics again. But boy that pacing was fast wasn't it? I think they could have trimmed the script up a bit and slowed things down. I have a ton of minor gripes but whatever. It was entertaining enough.

The best offer: 3/5 stars. First half is enjoyable. Clichéd mystery setup, but expertly executed. As the second half rolled in I could see where the story was going and telegraphed the twist a good hour before it actually happens, which ruined it for me. It's well made for what it is, but there are movies out there that do a better job with similar tropes. It's on Netflix so its still worth a watch if you subscribe.

The Forest. An easy 2/10, bumped up from a 1/10 only because Natalie Dormer is pretty and the intro title card was menacingly on point (think Insidious or The Conjuring.) Everything else was absolute trash. Somehow they managed to screw up a movie about a real-life Japanese suicide forest. An awful script and practically non-existent pacing drag the movie into the realm of being nearly unwatchable. Don't waste your time on it.
