I'm a bassist/drummer and at the moment looking for good live albums to listen to. I just recently got The Who's Live at Leeds, Deep Purples Made in Japan, and both Led Zeppelins How the West Was Won, and The Song Remains the Same albums. Anyone else have any recommendations?
Recommended Live Albums anyone?
"Live albums suck. It's like I want to listen to songs I like, but crappier. "
you could probably listen to bands that know how to play their music live I suppose.
I mostly listen to metal, there's a lot of bad sounding live recording there but my two favorite are Iced Earth's Alive in Athens and Blind Guardian's Through the Looking Glass. The only complaint about either is in regards to if you watch the videos instead of just listening to them and that's just specifically for BG because as much as Hansi is an amazing vocalist as a frontman he leaves a lot to be deserved.
I generally dislike live albums. However they're great for finding a song or two from your favorite band that isn't on any studio albums.
The only ones that come to mind are some Mindless Self Indulgence (alienating our audience) and Pantera (live 101 proof). I would have said Arch Enemy's Burning Japan Live for the track list, but their recent studio album Root of all Evil is pretty much the same thing but better.
Metallica's Live Shit Binge and Purge box set was pretty cool back in the day.
Either, Phish "A Live One", Phish "Hampton Comes Alive", Phish's recording of their Hershey Park Arena show this year (Available for download Here), or "Europe '72" Grateful Dead those would be my top picks for live albums you must listen to.
Heres a video from Phish "A Live One" for you to sample the musical stylings of Phish...its an audience recording so the mix is a little wierd, but it sounds pretty good.
Garbage Version 2.5.
It's a fanmade bootleg, but they don't have any official live albums. It's recorded directly off the soundboard, so the quality is amazing.
" If your into electronic music I would recommend Daft Punk's Alive 2007! "omg that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the title of this thread
" Live albums suck. It's like I want to listen to songs I like, but crappier. "That's only because the music you listen to is played by people with no real talent.
Daft Punk Alive 2007 is great
Live: Built to Spill is another one of my favorites. Favorite band plus a 20 minute Neil Young cover. Mm mm mm
Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again is a decent live album by Modest Mouse. After the track "Paper Thin Walls" I think there's a really great audience conversation about why they will never play a cover of "Freebird"
- The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Fillmore East
- Neil Young - Live Rust
- Cream - Live Cream vol. 1
- The Doors - In Concert
- George Harrison - Concert for Bangladesh
" @ArchScabby said:I'm sorry I didn't know you listened to my music collection. Shut the fuck up, you're an idiot." Live albums suck. It's like I want to listen to songs I like, but crappier. "That's only because the music you listen to is played by people with no real talent. "
" @ArchScabby said:I know, it's just whenever I listen to a live album all I think is that this would sound better if I was just listening to the actual album." Live albums suck. It's like I want to listen to songs I like, but crappier. "Eric Clapton and his six Grammy awards for his Unplugged album would disagree with you. "
In general I would agree with you, but occasionally a live album will capture the spirit of a band better than any studio album. Nirvana is a perfect example. For years I've said the only Nirvana albums you need to understand what made that band great were From the Muddy Banks of Wishka and Unplugged In New York Live at Reading is also great - all 3 of these live recordings are better than any of their studio albums." Live albums suck. It's like I want to listen to songs I like, but crappier. "
Basically, as long as you have a quality recording and the right band, a good live album can be better than any studio album.
I'd say the same of Daft Punk's Alive 2007 album. If you only own one Daft Punk album, that should be it.
Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan is another good example.
You might not like Peter Frampton, but Frampton Comes Alive is another good example of a good live album.

Dude ckeck out Salival - Tool. By the sounds of it they would be a band you'd really like. In particular, listen to the track Pushit (live).

seriously eh? Good bands are BETTER live. Thats a pretty good metric for the raw talent of a muscian, if they cant play live, they're a studio musician. Nothing wrong with that, just keep in mind that the real musical mastermind is the under-appreciated dude at the mixing/editing board.
S&M by Metallica is a great live album, and a great DVD too. Johnny Cash live at Folsom Prison is also great, and the only country album I really like.
I'm not a fan of live albums, but if there are live songs on the CD then I'm alright with them, I guess. As for albums that contain live tracks that I like, here they are:
- Take to the Skies - Enter Shikari
- Invaders Must Die [Special Edition] - The Prodigy
Admittedly neither of those albums are fully live, but they contain some tracks that were performed live. I know they may not be of interest to you, but I guess you might want to try either of them. I have no idea how much benefit they will have to a drummer or bassist, but you can always check.
Bad Religion - 30 Years Live (Free from their website)
Motorhead - No Sleep Til' Hammersmith (Best live album imo)
Rush - Exit...Stage Left

Daft punk Alive 2007
Queen - Live At Wembely Stadium
and
Rammstein - Völkerball (But you have to watch that one, since it's all what's Rammstein is about)
" I would recommend HAARP: Live from Wembly if you're into Muse or other alternative bands. "this!!!!!!!!!
oh and, listen to the original incubus songs then listen to the acoustic concert, thats a lesson in music everyone should hear, its the full 1 hour ocncert on youtube, incubus live at AT&T or something like that. they convert alternative rock into such acoustic awesomenes... (PS. im a bassist/drummer too)
Out of interest - did any of you guys make it to the HAARP Gigs back at Wembley?
No-one else i know other than the mrs likes Muse so I got no one to spit lyrical about how fucking badass that show was xD
If you dig The Fiery Furnaces, their live album, Remember, is fantastic. Rather than taping a show, it's a giant two disc medley mashup of live shows. Also, they totally re-create their songs every two, so it feels like new material.
It's out of print now, so find a download of Devo: The Mongoloid Years. It's a collection of recordings from the 70's when they were at odds with just about everyone in the world. The last section of the album is one of their first shows, where they performed at a radio station party and just belted pure noise. Cleared out a room of old coked up rock and rollers and stoned hippies. Those who stuck around were punished with Jocko Homo, which went on for so long you can hear people grabbing the mic from the band and threatening at them. It ends with the plug being pulled.
Elbow did a live version of their last album The Seldom Seen Kid, with the BBC Orchestra backing. It's phenomenal.
Hot Snakes' live radio show on Australian radio station JJJ, Thunder Down Under, is great. Everything about Hot Snakes is great.
Stop Making Sense, if it hasn't been said yet.
