Redeeming a US bought iTunes Card in Canada?

Is it possible to do this, I received the card as a Christmas gift, and the person who got it for me didn't realize until after they bought it that it might not work in Canada. They seemed to think that I could could get around the problem by using a US based proxy server, is this true and if so how would I do this? Thanks
