I just came home from my late-night candy shopping. Yes, I have a sweet tooth. Once I entered the hallway to my apartment there was a familiar smell I couldn't really describe, but without a seconds notice I associated it with Super Mario Bros. 2. That really freaked me out, and I had to do some thinking as to why it reminded me of that game in particular. I think it was the smell of my aunt's house, where I used to play a lot of NES games, especially SMB2 and Zelda, when I was growing up. It's not a food-related scent, but more of an old-house kind of thing. It got me thinking if I have any other memories based around scent, or can be triggered by it. I thought it was kind of interesting.

So, have you ever associated a smell with a particular video game? Or anything else?

The smell of a Christmas tree with Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit.

Because I was given the NFS 3-5 combo pack for Christmas Eve, and spent (very well-spent, I might add) the entire next day playing.

Sometimes the smell of a book's ink takes me back to receiving a new NES or SNES game and getting that "new instruction booklet smell." God I miss that.

Nag-champa incense. It reminds me of playing Jet Set Radio on the Dreamcast. I was visiting my Grandma and she gave me an old incense burner that she had just laying round. After Grandma's house I went and picked up Jet Set Radio and some good smelling sticks. Got home and played for hours while burning the sweet nag champa. Still love that stuff.

Speaking of bands, the first time I played through Marathon Durandal was to Underoath's Define the Great Line album. Every time I hear certain parts of that album, I am heavily reminded of that game. In fact, I can't listen to the entire thing or play that game without thinking of one or the other.

Fun game and great album, by the way.

As for other smells? Well, there's that new-game smell. You know, the one where you proudly unwrap a new game and the smell of plastic and instruction booklet that has not yet been touched by human hands? The one that gets you so excited to pop that new game in? Yeah, there's that one. But I can't really think of any others.

Blood and death!

Seriously though, I think old house smell for me too. Except it's for Super Mario Bros on the NES, also that Robin Hood game for the NES. It's probably because I played my grandparents old NES when I went over there as a little dudebro. I kind of get sad thinking about the good old days :{

The smell of rain mixed with the smell of the ocean makes me think of Pokemon Red. That's the strongest game-related association I have. I played huge amounts of Red when my family went on a road trip up to Oregon from northern California and we stayed in a cabin on the coast for a week. I specifically remember getting my Victreebell and working to evolve my Meowth. I would have been 10 at the time.

The memories of getting my various Game Boys do make me think of the smell of Christmas trees, but that association isn't quite strong enough to go the other way around. Mountain Dew makes me think of playing Halo and Smash Brothers in high school, but that's more of a flavor association.

I doubt it? Not really? Then again, it's quite some time since I last drank one.

My sister's friend had an N64 and we used to go over to their house fairly often to play. I'm not sure what it was, but they used a fabric softener with a very strong, specific sent. It's common enough that I still catch a whiff of it every once in awhile, and when I do, my mind automatically tells me "that smells like Nintendo".

I associate the smell of hot pockets with Fred Couples' Golf on the 32X. It was the first time I had had a hot pocket and had played that game. It was a day of firsts.

It's not whether or not Mountain Dew has a scent, it's whether Type II Diabetes has a scent (and it does, it smells like Mountain Dew.)

Two thoughts: Zelda - Ocarina of Time and... Chocolate Cream Pie. For some reason that sounded good when I picked up my copy of the game. It lasted about three or four days as I got my feet wet in the game. The scent of them always brings to mind Ocarina. Sorta out of the norm, since I didn't like the game nearly as much as my peers. Still a great though.

The other one is beer and Halo Reach or Call of Duty 4. CoD4 was a milestone in the 360's lifespan for me, as was Reach. A lot of LATE nights with those games and drinks with friends.

The taste/smell of coconut cookies comes to mind when thinking about Kirby 64. I was eating them just once while playing.

I remember around the time I had gotten Pokemon Blue, my mom and my friends mom used to use a lot of Febreeze in and around our houses. Now every time I smell the original Febreeze scent it reminds me of my long gone, care free days.
