When next gen hits I plan on moving to consoles for about 2 years, and then move back to PC (I did the same this gen, where I gamed mostly on PS3 until 2009 when I build a gaming PC).

I don't know however if I should upgrade now one last time for the games that are coming out in 2013, or if I should just wait.

I have a Q6600 CPU and a GTX 560 TI and just installed 4 GB of RAM (2 GB were getting slow). This setup has served me well and as I said in some other posts, even with the old Q6600 CPU I can play the last year's powerhouses (Battlefield 3, The Witcher 2) and this year's Sleeping Dogs at 1680x1050 with most/all details maxed out and get over 40 fps.

But I don't know how this system will handle Far Cry 3 and the upcoming Bioshock Infinite. I know I won't max them out, but I don't know what kind of performance I can expect from them and what details.

Should I just keep this setup and the upcoming games will run well enough on it, or do you think I should just do one last major upgrade?

I just upgraded earlier this year, but if I had waited until now, I would probably hold off much longer and just buy a console. I mean, whether I want to or not, I'll be forced to buy one for the exclusives.

The thing is, from a gaming standpoint, my Core 2 Duo was blazing through the games I played once I swapped in a GTX670 for the short time while I was waiting for the rest of the components to ship. So an older processor will most certainly be a bottleneck, but a good graphics card can be a decent stopgap. I mostly upgraded because I love the feel of building a new system... oh, and because a dual core processor also falls short at converting an entire physical movie and music library.

At the very lest, being the tech whore I am, I'd wait 'till Haswell (Intel's next processor architecture).

I think you should wait and see exactly how much they're pushing hardware with the next generation of games. It won't hurt, games running at medium-high still look a whole lot better than consoles, and you'll have a better idea of how much you'll need to upgrade.

I am not a doctor.

Wait until the specs are released on the "720" or "PS4".

Yes. A PC must be upgraded every 3 months to stay current and keep up with the Joneses.

Meh.

Could use more RAM just to be safe (nothing over 8gb) but you seem fine.

No need to upgrade every 90 days...

If you don't mind playing on medium settings then I would think the setup you have could pull you through 2014. I would wait until the next generation of consoles and see what, if anything, happens to recommended PC specs to get a better idea of what you might need. You don't want to spend $1000 now and find that your computer is slightly underpowered next year or the next.

So, yes, wait. Your computer sounds like it will last you a bit longer, despite it already being a bit long in the tooth.

That setup is ooooooold. You really should just upgrade everything. Or at least the CPU "which means motherboard as well most likely".

For real though, that setup should be fine for the next 12 months until the next gen consoles out, if that's the way you are going to play it. Upgrading the RAM to 8GB wouldn't hurt but otherwise I can't really see the point of spending a lot of money when the machine will go on the back burner soon enough.

If that's true, I wouldn't worry about Far Cry 3 at least. It seems very well optimized, and you'd probably get around the same results out of it.

If you want to upgrade to this current gen, even if it's almost at the end of it, you should do it now. Current gen parts are cheaper and they will continue dropping down in price as the next gen comes around. Problem is that next gen components will be expensive.

If money is not an issue then wait till next year and see what's available. If not, then you can upgrade now for cheap and it will still last you well into the next gen. You could upgrade your CPU and motherboard and get 8GB of RAM ($25 for 8GB, that's NOTHING.)

@SharkEthic:Sorry about that, i quoted the wrong person AND posted the wrong video. I'm not even drunk, i swear.

Anyways, :

Here is a video of somebody playing FC3 with very similar specs to you on ULTRA at 1080p(dx9 mode) and getting 25fps on average. Toggle down some settings and the resolution and i'd bet you can keep that shit above 40 and still look incredible.

Edit: actually, he says without fraps he stays at a steady 30-40.

To each his own but you should really switch up your buying habit. Buying a console at launch these days is just silly. Console exclusives are few and far between these days and the PC market just keeps growing. Even now at the end of this cycle can you really name more than a handful of must play games that were only available on the 360? If you buy a new console during the first year it will cost a fortune and they'll be one maybe two must play games. Everything else will still be coming out on the PC and will still probably look better. Wait a year or two and you'll get the console much cheaper, avoid nasty technical hiccups, and hopefully they'll be a decent library of games to play by then.

ATI is running a sick deal right now if you buy a Radeon card. You get three brand new games and 20% off COD. I don't need a new card but I was tempted to crossfire just because thats like $150 in games alone lol.

Yup.

And just wait for the new consoles to come out before deciding you want to go back to them or stay with PC.

Romania has universal health care, like all civilised nations. Well, for the time being at least, although the savages in their parliament seem hell bent on changing that. Chances are that psychiatric help his paid for with his taxes. In which case he'd be a fool not to go see one

Yes, I don't need to pay anything if I want to go. I don't see why should I tho. The savages in our parliament are hell bent on imprisoning everyone that oposes our president also.

depends on when soon is. it will most likely be unvailed at E3 and thats still a good time away and then it has to also be released.

but i really dont disagree.

No. If you can play the current games at Medium/High and if that is acceptable to you; it is silly to spend hundreds of dollars on an upgrade.

Like you, I am still running a Core2Quad (Q9550) with a GTX 560ti with 8gigs of RAM and everything I've thrown at my rig plays fine at Med/High+. Until that changes or I upgrade my system for work reasons I find it silly to do so. However when I do upgrade, I will be taking my current system and making it into an HTPC.

Yes, I don't need to pay anything if I want to go. I don't see why should I tho. The savages in our parliament are hell bent on imprisoning everyone that oposes our president also.

Because you are a none functioning sociopath who tell people to "go to hell"  when they try to be nice to you and try to make basic human connection with you all along thinking they are trying to make you "one of them". Not to mention how you get pissed off at your doctor telling you to go see a specialist because you cleaned your ears with a damn matchstick and now you have hearing problems.  What's worse is that you think you are fine and everyone else is the problem which is a major sign that you might have mental issues that needs to be taken care of before you're behaviour turns violent because maybe next time instead of just being a dick to people who are trying to be nice to you you are just gonna snap at them and try to separate their souls from their bodies.

Just because you make connection with people doesn't mean you are gonna lose your uniqueness and just be another borg drone. I am not saying this because I want to be mean. I am saying this because it needs to be said. Face it. You have mental issues and some health issues you need to take care of them. If you are not gonna take care of them out of your free will then at some point you will lose your collective shit and they will commit you.

ask your doctor if you should upgrade and then do the exact opposite.
