Poll Should the UK stay in or leave the EU? (1654 votes)

Stay In EU - "Stronger In" 77%
Leave EU - "Brexit" 22%

On Thursday 23 June 2016, people in the United Kingdom will get to vote on whether they want to stay in the European Union.

This decision is more significant than a typical vote in an election, since it will determine the United Kingdom's future governance and potentially have wide-ranging repercussions in Europe and beyond. It's the sort of vote we last had in the mid-1970's, when the UK agreed to join Europe's "Common Market".

Here's some information from the "Stay" and "Leave" campaigns. Here's the betting odds.

Do you think it will matter? Are you in the UK and planning on voting? If you are European, do you think a leave vote will have much effect on other countries in the EU? Does this referendum get much publicity around the world?

Personally, I can't wait until the polling station opens!

Well, my area voted 65% for leave. I am truly ashamed that as a country we let Nigel Farage win.

The terrifying thing is how the remain vote is propped up by Scotland and Northern Ireland. If it was just England voting, it'd be more clear cut. I was going to New York next year but this has fucked that idea.

People made their choice and it kinda makes sense. EU is composed of bunch of pricks that weren't working properly in last couple months. In Brussels it was business as usual instead of showing that there is something more than political debacle and bureaucracy. When normal people hate the structure its hard to expect them to stand behind it.

I can only hope its impulse for the change of EU before is too late and that will lead to postponing the Brexit process.

Will Cameron resign now? He's about to give a speech outside No. 10.

Personally, I think he's been a bit too pig-headed.

Exactly what we needed: Political turmoil over UK Domestic Governance during this time of International transition. Can't go wrong at all! Good thing every politician has shown to not be willing to tear the country down for any power whatsoever - otherwise we'd be completely screwed...

@cirdain: I should say, I understand your point about hopefully this will lead to the best person for the job taking over complete control of the EU talks (rather than a political race jeopardizing it) but this is incredibly disheartening.

I hope that move gives time for the smaller business to plan effectivily for the divorce because they don't have access to all the future thinkers the bigger businesses have.

Well there is the chance that going by the Heat map of votes that the UK could very much become significantly less U if Scotland and Northern Ireland peace out, hell Scotland nearly did it very recently before all of this nonsense.

Well that's not the way I'd hoped it would go but as a democratic process I respect it and the result must now be observed, no matter how flimsy and insubstantial the post-EU plan appears to be. Short term uncertainty is likely to lead to large amounts of value being wiped off the pound and products costing more for a while... the faster a new status quo is reached, the better on that front.

Boris will probably be PM by November. He'll only get my vote if he puts forward a clear, positive, non-xenophobic manifesto. If Farage or other of his ilk are anywhere near power, I'll be forced to do something I've never done before and vote labour.

@rhombus_of_terror: I actually just did the Maths on this to illustrate it to a friend. I brought Giant Bomb in the membership sale ($35) and it cost £21.20. If I was to take that same membership sale right now it would cost me £25.90. The price of Giant Bomb has gone up by £4.70 (which is $6.35 right now)

@machofantastico: Not being a Brit and dealing with this directly, I can't really fathom what is a reasonable level of concern over this. That said, seeing people maul Dan on Twitter over a small remark he made about Brexit is disheartening. Emotions are running pretty high for people right now, I get that, but I'd hope people don't lose their cool too badly.

@devil240z: Potentially, on two fronts: Firstly, this could flair up Irish anxieties and anger previously buried as the potential of a referendum for Irish reunification seems possible (Northern Ireland, voted to stay in the EU despite England and Wales predominantly voting otherwise, and if they join Ireland then they would stay in the EU). The Irish border between north and south represents the only land-based border of the UK with Europe. While in the EU, it was open freely, however outside it may be put under border control deeply affecting those living near the border. Would they go to war? Probably not, but the last MP assassination before Jo Cox was a terrorist attack from the IRA (an organisation willing to use terror for the sake of Irish unionism) so it's certainly possible.

Secondly, this could cause a cascade of countries leaving the EU relatively soon after each other in a wave of difficult negotiations. That sort of international intensity could certainly lead to more terrorist groups, and potentially (if a significant number of poor political decisions or critical number of events occur simultaneously) lead to acts of war. This is even more unlikely, but certainly possible. The EU was the final result of a long peace process which aimed to put aside tensions brought from the two World Wars (which centred on Europe), it's not completely ludicrous to see its erosion as also a sign of a potential broken peace.

I must stress though, this is all very extreme speculation and the modern connected world seems to be the most conflict-averse the world has ever been.

American Liberals should be worried. If fear can win it over here, it can win it over there too. This result could even strengthen Trumps campaign.

@devil240z: this is way to complicated to get into and answer shortly, I suggest googling Ireland and "The Troubles". In its most reductive form, the northern part of Ireland is part of the UK, the southern part is it's own state. There are people on in the northern part that want the northern part be in the UK, and part that want the Northern part to be part of Ireland. There is also a religious alignment to this as well between Catholics and Protestants and tensions are still high. . Add in 100s of years of persecution by the the UK and you've got very passionate Irish people that don't want to be part of the UK. They reached a deal in 1997. Now The southern part of Ireland is in the EU and the top part isn't (despite the majority of them voting to remain). There has to be a lot of negotiations that will open old wounds such as the freedom for people to move between south and north as just one.

THIS IS VERY SIMPLIFIED, and if you want to know more i suggest you google "The troubles, Ireland" or approach questions to any Irish people cautiously.

Nigel Farage has been on TV already this morning, saying that the money that the Leave campaign promised would be made available to the NHS on a Brexit win...was actually not correct.

Also, one of the other Leave guys was on saying, the stuff they sold their supporters on immigration, were also actually incorrect/false.

So, the 2 "main" points of their campaign (as I saw it) were a lie, or just plain wrong. I (and others) had been telling people this before the vote, as anyone who did even a little research could have seen that.

I would have thought they would spin it out a little longer, but within hours, they have been on TV basically saying, "you know all that stuff you voted for? Weeeellllllllll...soz!"

Gonna be a rough day here.

The £ is super low as we all know (lowest since 1985 apparently)

TV/Social media are going to but full of nothing BUT this

Nigel Farage's face... ;)

This is an interesting read on "what now" (fairly balanced with the good and bad)

So that wasn't the result I expected or wanted to wake up to but man it's going to be a crazy time. I think it's disgusting that a few hours after the result Farage goes on TV and distances himself from the £350 million NHS leave campaign promise saying it was a mistake to make those claims.

Cameron resigning as this happens is kind of a dick move, I don't like him but when there's so much uncertainty about the future of the country it's not the time to step down. A possible Labor leadership battle too.

I just looked at the break down of votes on the BBC website and I think the Ireland situation is rather worrying and Scotland should probably get a second vote on their independence, just maybe don't use the pound as the currency now...

I hope this works out well for all of the countries in the UK but also the EU as an organisation too. Just please not Borris for the next PM and let Farage just drift away into obscurity.

Either half of the UK is made up of racists and xenophobes--which I seriously doubt, and should hope isn't true-- or the people voting stay perhaps should have focused less on race and more on other arguments.

No one likes being called a racist, and constantly associating someone's political option with racism seems to be a good way to enrage them into action.

Anger often leads to more support for AND against the cause you believe in, and accusations of racism sure would lead to some anger.

All Brexit has succeeded in doing is:

Separating Britain from Europe.

Separating Scotland from England

Separating younger generation from the old.

I feel kinda weird. Empty. Spent.

This was the nastiest political campaign (from both sides) I've ever voted in, and I've been voting for 20-odd years, a lot of them in N Ireland. Lots of passionate people letting things understandably spill over because of the lack of leadership shown by their chosen side? Perhaps.

We live in interesting times.

@sanj: Those numbers are not surprising, it seemed that Leave-campaign focused on "good old days" and promising £350 million to NHS would matter significantly more to elderly. Younger people must feel pretty pissed because after couple decades the people who voted for Brexit will be gone and they end up spending their whole lifetime cleaning up the mess.

Elsewhere, Pro-Russia and anarchist groups are celebrating.

I'm sure a lot of people have woken up really happy with how things went but my own mild disappointment is nothing compared to the deathly sombre mood in my research laboratory this morning. We have some of the best (if not the best) scientists from around Europe (including the UK) and the world here and there's a real and widespread concern about the viability of some of our longer-term projects and the staff working on them being permitted to continue given the nature and involvement of EU research funding. From a UK research perspective priority #1 has got to be the regularization of visas for students and academics. There mustn't be a brain drain from UK research.

Indeed. Meanwhile, to add to the general dystopic fever dream quality of it all... the Trumpcopter has landed in the UK.

Nationalism is back in Europe. We've been here before and obviously have not learned anything from it. The empty promise of a return to a non existing glorious past by the demagogic chest beaters like Boris Johnson, Marie Le Pen and Donald Trump can only be filled by blood and suffering. I am ashamed to call myself a European today. We have failed to deliver for further generations in a despicable, selfish way.
