Watched the blu-ray version, now I didn't go and see it in the cinema and wasn't totally sure what to expect. My expectations were rather low to be honest, and it wasn't helped by a awfully dull first 30 or so minutes. The whole concept behind Avatar seemed generic and predictable and in most respects it was, but it worked out better then I was expecting. So like I said, first 30 minutes were somewhat dull, I was delighted when the film actually starting picking up as they started to explore Pandora. Now this is where I shall lay down my biggest criticism of the film, this isn't one of James Cameron's best films by some distance, partly due to his reliance on the technology. It's almost seems as if he wanted to cover up the often questionable dialogue with bright colourful shiny visual effects. Thankfully there are some stand out performances, especially from Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana who I thought were surprisingly good. The film did remind me of why I dislike Sigourney Weaver though I thought Stephen Lang was fantastic.
Now despite these flaws, I thought Avatar was a breathtaking visual experience. Few films make me regret not seeing them in cinema (having Arthritis I find it hard to get to them to often) and even though I honestly couldn't give two backsides about 3D, I do regret not seeing Avatar on the big screen. The Na'Vi ended up being a lot more respectable then I was expecting, and the human's (or sky people) were as generic all-American hero types I was totally expecting. This makes sense for the storyline, but I thought some of the human scenes and dialogue was downright awful at times. Still, I shan't say I didn't end up enjoying Avatar. In fact the later parts of the film are superb. If it had generally better dialogue and some better performance from names you'd expect to perform in such a movie, I think it would have been worth that Oscar award. But having seen Hurt Locker recently as well, I think the winner was a worthy choice. I did find the world of Pandora immersive though and James Cameron did a stunning job with the visuals, which at times are gobsmackingly beautiful. As a gamer, I usually have problems with CG made films as my trained eyes spots issues but Avatar looked downright superb throughout.
So overall I very much enjoyed Avatar, I went in with zero expectation and was won over by James Cameron's latest film. I just wish that the dialogue was handled with more care at times and the current blu-ray release is begging for say a Directors Cut with extended scenes and features. One other note of praise is James Cameron's choice to not film in the usual film perspective, not a film nerd so don't know the proper term but watching it on my HDTV and not having black lines at the top and bottom of my screen was wonderful and goes a long way to immerse yourself into the World James Cameron as created.
Avatar is why blu-ray was created, I highly recommend you get that version if you can. DVD looks solid but lacks some of the spark.

So I watched Avatar last night!
Therefore, i went to the 3D movie theater and watched Avatar. had an amazing visual experience, the story was generic but still interesting and kept me concentrating, and overall it was a GOOD blockbuster, unlike the tons of blockbusters that came out in the last few years that were trying too hard, forgot that they're movies and tried to reach for.. whatever the fuck they wanted to reach for. Which made them dull and sad. like The Dark Knight and Transformers 2.
Im glad you enjoyed the visuals, they were stunning on the big screen :)
Everyone acts like some sort of film elitist, yet most ppl around the world imo would like avatar. It wouldn't be appealing to everyone if it wasn't a simple story to everyone. Not every film needs to be like the dark knight in story telling. Also yes it looks great on blue ray, i'm really surprised because at times the na'vi looks realistic in high definition.
" Avatar was exactly what i want out of a movie experience, It was an event! Was it perfect no, but it was definitely the best cinema experience ive had since Fellowship of the ring. "I feel the same way. It still wasn't quite as fun as the LOTR movies but a great experience nonetheless
" @Ahmad_Metallic said:Since everyone hated T2, i guess you're talking about The Dark Knight. yes.. im serious. why so serious?! because the movie tried too hard to be all ACTIONY and MYSTERIOUS and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. it failed man..Which made them dull and sad. like The Dark Knight and Transformers 2.Oh Jesus. You're not.. serious are you? "
" we really do need a Whiskey Media website about films, don't we? Haha. "hahaha indeed xD
" @dudeglove said:hmm... it really was. wow you're good really that was brilliant ! Dances With Wolves x The Last Samurai... BRILLIANT !" The film is cheesy and predictable, but was nice and purty. You really need to see it in 3D. I don't think it's an outstanding movie, but seriously - 3D. "IT IS PREDICTABLE BECAUSE IT IS DANCES WITH WOLVES/THE LAST SAMURAI "
The film was great.
The plot was a little cheesy, like Jake turned on his own race to become a Na'vi just to get legs, like really?
But the special effects and the action was amazing.
