So, someone lectured me about the friends I have(race)

This guy that I barely know just lectured me on how the people I hang around with are low class and that I should hang around his friends instead -_-.

I hang around a couple of Koreans, 3 black friends, 2 Hispanic friends( don't know what country), Those are my immediate friends atm. I didn't think it was a big deal,

So, anyway, he told me a bunch of stuff about how I shouldn't be hanging around with them because they are dirty and bad corrupt people, that they'll only drag me down with them. That I'll be driven into poverty, my grades will slip and I'll be miserable my whole life by associating with them. He actually got me thinking, he was very persuasive. I met up with his friends, they offered me some Marijuana. As I was sitting there, I realized, these people are racist. I don't know why I didn't think about it before, they seemed so normal. I would of imagined them looking like nazis, bald hair, swastikas etc.. No they were just regular people, except they were racist. I couldn't just leave so I stayed for a couple of hours. I'm not gonna call them back, but it got me thinking about how easy some people can be drawn into a certain scene. I feel disgusted that these type of people exist. I'm just so angry at some of the things they said about every race, I was mad because it wasn't true at all. I knew this for a fact.

I didn't really grow up with white people, I grew up in a mixed school. I guess you can say I'm rather poor. Everyone was nice to me, my race was never an issue growing up. I feel if I say anything racist it would be like staving my own people in the back.

Sounds like this guy you barely know is a jerk, I say avoid him and call it a day. You have friends you've known for awhile and like, you stand by them and that's all you have to worry about.

Racism is bad. You should only segregate based on religion.

It's all about the cultural environment that we were brought up in. You are not born a racist, you are brought up to be one. Whether is social media, parents, neighbors, etc., it's the environment that one is brought up in that makes one person feel like they are far superior over another based on the color of their skin.

So since you were born and raised up around an area where a lot of different races and cultures are present, your values and views were effected by that. You view everyone as equal. That we are all human being, and we are only measured by our actions and not by our looks. This is what I believe in, and I believe more and more people are starting to believe this way as well.

However, you have the people who weren't so lucky to have grown up in this type of environment, and as a result they are influenced by their surroundings to find being racist as a normal behavior. Now this is not entirely their fault, as they were most likely brought up to believe that based on what has happened in their life while growing up, but they chose to keep those values in their life. Not exploring other options, and being closed minded individuals. So they tend to enjoy stereotyping other cultures based on what they were raised on to believe, and what they see on mainstream media.

But I just hope that more and more people who are racist just tend to stop, look themselves in the mirror, and ask "Am I really that superior?"

Casual racism is real problem that a lot of people take far too lightly. I'm glad that you recognized it and I hope you fight against it.

So you have two choices...

1 A bunch of in-bred stoners with no understanding of the world.

2 A bunch of awesome duders who know what it feels like to be hated on for their colour or ethnicity.

Your description of those guys reminds me of my racist stepfather. The logic he uses to defend his way of thinking is ridiculous. I'm just happy my mother found him after I left the house. Growing up with a guy like that calling the shots would have been a nightmare. Makes me appreciate my father that much more. I recommend you just do what makes you most comfortable. If you don't like racism don't go near racists, simple as that. Also, don't be so quick to abandon your friends, and your principles to make some guy you never met before happy.

Hate to play devil's advocate here, but are you sure he was talking about their race? I mean, you could just be hanging out with a bad crowd. Not that a bunch of stoners is much better.

I had somebody tell me I'd get sick of my girlfriend when her "wonky English" starts to annoy me, I think that was his way of trying to sound less racist by just insulting her language abilities as she's Japanese. Anyone that pulls shit like that is just being removed from my life.

This whole story sounds surreal.

We all have certain prejudices, however small. And I don't mean that we hate people who are different from us. We're humans, and we're just wired that way. But some people look at these prejudices and blow them up to frightening proportions. Because they're afraid of what they don't know. They've never really had close relationships with people who are different from them, so they make up shit to try and understand them.

This guy seems like one of those people.

But keep this in mind you never really know who your friends really are until your in trouble, you'll have alot acquaintances in your life and very few true friends make sure you do things because you want to and not just because others are asking you to

People who are racist these days are racist because they choose to be or because they have mental issues.

It is best not to be around these people. Both types are dangerous.

Seriously though, you made the right choice dude. And it sounds like you don't need me to tell you that. The world is a huge place, filled with all kinds of assholes. Treat them like a cancer and cut them off from your life as fast as possible. Trying to understand them is often futile, so it's best to just forget about them and move on. Keep on leading by example and hopefully others will follow. If not, hopefully natural selection/karma kills them off/catches up with them.

A lot of other people who don't know me at all sees me like this. Luckily I don't have to deal with it to much these days. Something fucked up usually only happens when I visit family in the south or go on our yearly float trip.

All kidding aside, I don't really understand why a lot of people let people who don't matter get into their heads with this kind of stuff..

I definitely agree with the commwmt that you're not born racist. I grew up around predominantly white people, though I wouldn't call myself racist, I probably picked up more prejudices than I'd like.

Over the past ccouple years, I like to think that I've grown and gottwn past those. I changed schools from a private school, and the people at my new school were generally kinder than tthe people I had grown up with. That really genuinely surprised me, as I'd had it drilled into my head that thesr people were basically bad people.

I realized just how many racist, elitist assholes I'd grown up with. Most of those people have turned out to be young rich assholes leeching their parents money to buy expensive shit and sit around going to the desert and drink and smoke pot. Only a handful of people still talk to me, and tbh I'm glad. The ones who were my close friends turned out to be mostly normal and not complete dicks.

Maybe your friends suck, though. Either way, you don't provide enough information for me to condemn any party in this tale.
