Someone explain the plot of Star Wars

I love the original Star Wars trilogy. Obviously I'm aware the prequel trilogy is garbage, except I did enjoy the last 45 minutes of Episode 3 just for it showing how everything wraps up. Going back to the shit movies, can someone explain who the hell the Republic was fighting? I never understood who controlled the droid army or for what their ultimate goal was. I kind of get that the war was staged for the Emperor's goal to rule the galaxy with "the rule of two", but someone shed some more light for me.

The wrinkly dude in a robe never got laid, so he took out his frustration by having a bunch of clones fight a bunch of robots, and then when that got boring he used the clones to make everyone do what he wanted.

Palpatine wanted to seize control of the Republic but he knew that the Senate would never give him power under normal circumstances.  Therefore as his alter ego of the Sith Lord he convinced the Trade Federation that the Republic was weak and by blockading Naboo they could force the Senate to comply with their demands.  He provided them the Droid army.  Now he knew that the Senate would react strongly against the actions on Naboo and this lead to his elevation to Chancelor and the clone army with which to fight.  So now he's the basic head of both armies, which ever army wins is fine with him since the purpose of teh war is to throw the Republic into chaos and terror allowing him to rule and to eliminate the Jedi order.

This is why the prequels were so bad, nobody knew what was happening, it just looked pretty.
 
Just watch redlettermedia's review of the first 2 prequels, it will make sense plot wise and give you an idea of how bad the movies really were.

The droid army was led my separatists from within the Republic.  Count Dooku was a powerful Jedi-turned-politician who used the Trade Federation as a means to disrupt and separate from the government.  I'm sure there were some fake political issues in play, but mostly it was an excuse to start a war against the Republic and eventually put the galaxy in the hands of Darth Sidious, who was really Palpatine.

There's no plot.  There's probably a better part of the review than this to illustrate that. Go watch them all. It's worth it.
