Sony is watching you play your video games?!?!? and congratulating on your trophies...

Maybe more like monitoring your trophies...

So here's a weird e-mail I got today. I finally beat Nioh over the weekend and this morning I get an e-mail from playstation@playstationemail.com with the subject Hyakume has been defeated.

I don't know if I should be creeped out or mildly amused that I'm being watched lol. I'm sure because I opted into a few things from Playstation's settings but this is a first time I've gotten an e-mail like this.

Wondering if anyone got e-mails like this for beating their games.

You're not being watched. Trophies are updated server side so other players can see your trophy collection. Some trophies have flags that trigger these types of emails. It's not like there's a room full people whose only job is comb through trophy data and send out emails.

Hrm never gotten one of those.

It just means that there is a mailing robot that accesses trophy data, as well as the robot that displays trophies in the app and on their website, among all the other robots. I doubt a human ever looked at any of the data. There are no actual robots but it's more fun to think of it that way.

Is this really all that different from that time they contacted Bloodborne players who Platinumed it or w/e and gave them a special theme?

I wished things like this happened more often.

Now that you mention it the email I got from Sony saying "You should play games shirtless more often" was weird.

I got an email from Steam saying a game on my wishlist is on sale. It's like they are spying on... themselves.

Huh, I don't recall getting anything for my Bloodborne Platinum... I'll have to go and check.

Its somewhat normal if you platinum a game for them to send an e-mail, i got one for Battlefield 1 and a few other games i don't remember. Sometimes they even give a theme here and there like with Horizon or Bloodborne.

"Hey you finished that game. Now buy these".

Sony did something cool a year or two ago for long term PS+ members. If you gave them your address following an email they'd send you a personalized print of your PSN/PS+ activities.

Let me tell you about this thing called capitalism....

I doubt we are being watched. If so the jokes on them, I play in the buff.

@shindig: Took me over a year to wrap up the trophies for that game (and for all the dlc), but lemme tell you, the view from the parade is pretty rad

Yeah me neither, it pissed me off a bit because a friend of mine got the Platinum after I did and also got the theme. (which looks pretty cool)

I also got a bunch of emails like this while I was playing Infinite Warfare. It's nothing new. (or scary)

You have a million reasons to actually worry about being spied on or tracked but this is low on the list.

They've been doing this for years.

They don't get to watch...I MAKE them watch.

"Being watched" is a bit strong.

The trophy triggered a mail from Sony when it was synchronized to your server. They are observing you so much as any other page that sends a welcome email when you register.

I have most interactions turned off.

If you are having too many Pop-Up Notifications that get in the way, you can selectively shut most of them off. I have notifications for nearly everything except Friends requests and Invites not checked. You can still see many Notifications, but they are on teh upper menu with the "Information" or "I" icon. So, messages about trophies, friends who are in groups, or what games got updates show up there not popping up during games.

I received one after finishing Wildlands a couple weeks ago. Uplay likes to do this.

@nusakan: This isn't weird. I've gotten these for years. They aren't consistent about it, but they have done it since around the PS4 launch. They aren't watching you...sometimes you'll get a theme or something out of it.
