The Animals or The Rolling Stones? AND NO YOU CAN'T PICK NEITHER
For my money, The Animals were a much more versatile band. Eric Burdon was such a talented singer, capable of inserting an inconceivable amount of soul in to any given song for a white dude. Way better than Mick Jagger ever was. Of course, this is just one man's opinion and I'd like to hear yours. If you've got no taste for either band I'm sure you're going to complain about them here, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna let you vote in my poll!
I think the Animals were a fantastic band / group. they were overshadowed to a point that they didn't get the success I think they should of.
That's the only song I've heard from the Animals, So I'm going to choose the Rolling Stones.
Now for a hard one The Beach Boys or the Beatles?
I love The Animals, while I think Burdon did his best stuff with War, House of the Rising Sun is still a damn good song even today.
@Getz: Paint it Black was written in 1966. Zeppelin formed in 1968. Two years is a difference in eras? Even if you go by when The Stones formed, that was '62. I think that's all still the same "era."

5 years is plenty of time for music to shift, especially in an incredibly fertile musical environment such that the late sixties and early seventies were. If you listen to Zep's early recordings and then their later stuff like "Levee" you can see a pretty big leap as well.
I have no idea who the Animals are but based on the fact that I utterly loathe everything involved with the Stones I'd have to default to that.
Uh...The Beatles. There.

Stones, duh.
Edit: I changed my mind. Led Zeppelin.
Agreed. Led Zeppelin are still gods.
Stones, pretty easily, though House of the Rising Sun might be better than anything the Stones ever put out. I've always preferred the Beatles and the Kinks, though.
Whoa, man. I don't even know "The Animals" by name. I know some of their songs, though. I'll look them up to do more research. House of the Rising Sun is an incredible song. Though, The Stones are my 2nd or 3rd favorite band, so I'm going with The Stones. Holy crap, though. The Animals are bad ass. Though I can see why they're lesser known. They let their music speak for itself, they don't really sell it. They're not as interesting to watch. There's not enough Jagger chicken dancing.
I love the Animals but this isn't really a fair fight. Rolling Stones has such a huge body of work behind them spanning so many eras and styles. I admit they have much lower lows than the other band (than most bands actually), but... c'mon... Under my thumb, Sister Morphine, Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses. They have more awesome tracks than The Animals total song collection.
Is this even a question? Stones, obviously. Quantity and quality.
Animals didn't even write House of the Rising Sun.

Led Zeppelin is very much a band steeped in the 70s. Stones were more universal and kinda just did what worked for each era. They were a more diverse band to be sure.

House of the Rising Sun existed as the name for a song before, sure, but saying that The Animals didn't write their version of it is absurd. That's like saying Led Zeppelin didn't really write most of their songs. A song is more than its lyrics and legacy dude.

I agree to an extent, no one even knows who wrote it originally. However I wouldn't say The Animals wrote their version. Their version is a classic, but the arrangement is pretty heavily based on Dave Van Ronk's version.

Psh, classic cover band excuse.
(I'm kinda just messing around. I love that cover, I even have a first run 45 of it)
But still, The Animals' cultural contributions are exponentially overshadowed by The Rolling Stones.
