To sum things up, there was a report on apparent racism at a fire hall in Nova Scotia, Canada. Anonymous people online commented on the story and started making fun of the firefighters, and now the courts here have decided that the ISP's had to give out the commenters names. Whether the fire hall decides to sue these commenters is still up in the air, but apparently in Canada we no longer have the freedom of anonymity on the internet.
I am scared of where this is heading. Although I can understand why people believe that there needs to be some sort of accountability for your actions on the internet; I believe that the anonymity of this place is important. I love being an ass on the internet and if someone decided to sue me for every inflammatory comment I have ever made I would shit my pants.
What do you think of this scenario? Is this a one time incident, or a sign of things to come? Geez, personal accountability on the internet, who would of thought.

I wouldn't mind if every annoying little prick on the internet was rounded up and kicked in the nuts, especially the ones on xbox live, but this sounds like it could be a slippery slope and lead to a lot more censorship. Which do I want more...

I think this is hilarious and that lawyer is an idiot if she thinks she can actually get a case out of this. Sued for being a critic or speaking poorly about someone? Really? Maybe the laws are different in Canada, but I can't see anything coming out of this.

I doubt it's a one time occurrence.  We are all living under the "protective" arms of the nanny-state.  Government wants only what is best for you and since you don't seem to know how to behave properly, it is their responsibility to correct you whenever you step out of line.  Mother loves you so be a good boy and do as you're told.

I know, there are too many ups and downs to consider. Imagine this though, you have to get a license for the internet and you get one e-mail address and one username wherever you go.

What a stupid situation. The site that broke the story should have simply removed the comments, and from the bottom of the article, it sounds like that's exactly what happened. Honestly if it was me I know I wouldn't like those types of comments either but unless someone can prove that these were seriously the most offensive comments of the century, you can't just run around looking to sue em. Well actually you can, of course you can, but I'm just saying I wouldn't. From an outsider perspective, this looks less about internet accountability and more about someone looking to make a buck.

The laws are different in Canada. For example, we don't have a parody exception when it comes to insulting somebody (ie. south park being able to make fun of Tom Cruise in a joking manner).

The internet's never going to be censored in the U.S.  At least not in our lifetimes.

Wait, what? So the most blatantly ridiculous thing on the entire internet (Tom Cruise eats babies!!!) can be taken seriously and you can sue for that? Damn.

Well. I think we all know how this will play out. Because of the loss of freedom in Canada, we..The United States of America..must  regime change the current Harper government, maybe even depose the Queen of England. It's obvious that this internet clampdown is a precursor to the use of WMDs from Canada aimed squarely at America. Make no mistake we must protect ourselves from those touk wearing, Labatts Blue drinking, unAmerican bacon eating monsters!

...this is why I'm glad I live in America.  As fucked up as our citizens can be as time, we know internet is "no-touch", unless you threaten to kill a President.

I actually laughed at that one. Interesting Canada fact though, especially when it comes to WMD's. One of our largest exports is uranium / plutonium, and we sell it to almost anybody.  We helped the Americans build the first A-Bombs, we supplied the goods for the British, taught India how to make an A-Bomb - then sold em' the goods to do so. We were the worlds largest producer of chemical weapons until we signed a treaty in 67' (yes there was human testing), and we were a major player in biological warfare until 72'.
Anywhoo... back on topic. I hope this doesn't get out of hand.

@Kombat:
Are you fucking kidding me? The netpocalypse has already begun my friend.

Check this shit out.

Taking into account that China probably tops that list, the US is number 5 in the world for government requests for removal of content. Then when you look at the data request numbers (The ones that specify how much user information the government has asked for.) the number steps up to number 3. Now what that content of these requests are we can't determine, but to say that the net isn't being censored by the government is just foolhardy.

Hell man, Britain's torrents went down the toliet. Canadas all up in this shit now. The US is next. Shit is about to crack down and the net as we know it is over unless something is done.

Nothing will be done. The internet will continue to get more and more regulated as the dinosaurs in governement die off and people who grew up online start moving into offices. The wild west aspect of the internet will only last for so long.
