The Giant Bomb crew says this word a lot

"Janky" Pronounced Jayn-kee.
 
What does this word mean? I tried using it in casual conversation and people give me looks like, "huh?"
 
I remember Jeff said something like, "The controls are kind of janky."

Messed up, jagged, unintuitive. Your friends are just dumb.

When they use it, it's supposed to mean "broken" or "not good". Maybe it's a Cali thing, but I've never heard it used in actual conversation so I'd avoid using it.
 
EDIT: Then again, when you think about it, it should be pretty obvious what it means. I'm sure most people would get what it means even if they hadn't heard it if presented in context.

Janky -adjective -- Poorly constructed or put together, and does not seem like it should function at all, although it may perform beyond expectations.

My friend Aaron could probably tell you better than anyone... though he hardly ever signs in when he visits.

"Janky" is used a lot in day-to-day conversation where I'm from.  I had a history teacher that used it a lot, and I've definitely used it on occasion.

Having to get up early in the morning seems janky to me.

It's a great word. Well, at least it sounds cool.

The word basically describes Disneys Goofy. He's always ragged and stupid looking, he drives a car that sputters and pops and has different sized wheels so it goes up and down as it drives forward. You could say he's janky. Or Jankie.

When someone says the word "janky", my first thought is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

We use it here in britain a lot as well, it just means clunky, odd, different. Not necessarily bad, but usually.

It means something like messed up.

Yeah, I hear it quite a bit here in the East Bay.
