Can us europeans make our voices heard too?
The internet is FUCKED
"Cool Story Bro! "
I'm really starting to hate this comment.
Anyway, any idea what the chances are that this thing will actually get through congress and the senate? I guess it makes sense that they want to shut down sites that pirate content but i really don't like any kind of censorship. I should probably go do some research on the thing.
I don't see how they would enforce such a thing.
The influence of massive international corporations on the US gov't is disgusting.
"The mechanism by which the government would do this, according to the bill, is the internet’s Domain Name System (DNS), which translates web addresses into IP addresses. The bill would give the Attorney General the power to simply obtain a court order requiring internet service providers to pull the plug on suspected websites."
Lol. The next thing anyone does is change their hosts file or set a different DNS server. A law written by people that have no understanding of how the internet works in the first place. Great job guys.
Didn't you get the memo?
Sweden went from being fun-loving flowerhippy liberals to Instant-Hitler(tm).
Stuff went crazy afterwards..
" Cool Story Bro! "Hey, that is a very useful meme. Don't take away its value by using it against legitimate posts.
" So yeah remember that internet censorship bill brought before the Senate Judiciary Committee? Yeah, that one. Well ladies and gentlemen, it passed. And this is the beginning of the end, as they say. TL:DR version of the bill. Basically, the Attorney General can now shut down any site they deem to have"copyrighted content as the main focus of the site". Only problem is, the metrics for this arent being made public. So, if youre the cynical type like me, they could shut down any site for any reason and not have to explain themselves. The good news: Its not a law yet. It still has to go before congress to be passed and the real senate. Living in Canada, I implore you Americans: MAKE YOUR DAMN VOICE HEARD. Because as we all know, whatever America does, Canada does too. "And they will, like they've been wanting to do for fucking years. Fuck. I wish we had the sort of coalitions we had in the nineties. With everything they've been doing lately to try to monetize digital culture it is time for a big street fight. I'm ready. Fuck all. I know most of the rest of you blackhead faces aint, but I am more than ready.
It's not panic time, this is just the Judiciary Committee and they pass a lot of stupid shit that never sees the light of day. Congress does't have time to actually pass the bill before recess and in the interval there will be a ton of lobbying and the like.
Not to say that we shouldn't be well aware of whats going on so that we can make our voices heard, just reminding you that it's not like they have actually passed anything yet.
Yeah, how come whenever I see a government talking about technology or the internet they have no idea what they're saying? If this does get passed everyone will just take a way around it." I don't see how they would enforce such a thing.

I'm guessing that if somebody knows how to torrent, somebody will know how to find the way (or a walkthrough) around the censorship.
What they really want to do is rebuild from the ground up with "security" in mind. A pay to play net, with companies in ultimate control of content. That's the plan at least and we'll probably see some of it come to fruition in the next 5 or 10 years." @Ragdrazi: im an L fan boy its my job to stop criminals and terrorists of any kind so be warned and any way how the hell can you moderate the internet "

" @MadeinFinland: god how awesome would it be if we had a civillian run internet, like a peer to peer internet wired together, like a fucking massive lan "That would be amazing. We have a basic LAN service through my university campus and we've hooked up some external hard drives to the server. We can just stream movies through VLC. Imagine everyone being able to do this without having to worry about annoying domain stuff.
Come to think of it.. Nah, it would be too cool.
Like they would enforce this. I'm sure the government has more important things to focus on than policing the internet.
" @Ragdrazi: ok give me a second im gona go change my hat ok good now im a v fan boy so lets get down to some nasty stuff against those who wish to hurt our internet lol none of this realy effects me but still i like the people here at gaint bomb so ill fight for the cause "Well, coalition build, define targets, define tactics, and act.
So what have we got for targets.
