Couldnt find a thread about this so i thought i would share.

 My opinion of Verizon.
 My opinion of Verizon.
Verizon ISP has blocked their users from visiting the website 4chan. Now whether you like the site or think it is a hive of scum and villainy, you should be worried about the precedent this sets for other ISP's. The idea that an ISP can decide what content on the internet can be viewed is a very scary proposition, and can lead to some very frightening turn of events. I guess they never heard "If you don't like a website then don't go to it" before.

  • So do any of you have Verizon as an ISP?
  • Does the idea that they are starting to dictate what you can and can not view online worry you any?
  • What would you do if you found out your ISP started to block your favorite sites, like giantbomb.com for example?

SOURCE

UPDATE: Apparently it is just those with Verizon wireless and not their whole suit of ISP services that are blocking the site, as of now.

That is pretty rediculous

Although that website is known for hosting illegal pictures such as Child Pornography so i guess it makes sense for it.

I don't see them being able to ban other sites unless its something illegal like torrents

Hhhmm...I've been hearing about that site but never bothered to look it up till now. It looks like a cheap version of any image hosting site. What makes this one better? Just curious.

@crusader8463 it seems ONLY Verizon wireless ISP does this. Not Fios or DSL.

I have FIOS which works fine.

Seems the site the OP used did not do their full research before posting about this.

But couldn't they make some type of defense that says, "you're paying for our Internet, so we get to decide how you use it, not you"?

If you go to the bottom of the source they just updated it with this. Whether or not they are just the first of their programs to do this, or if they will all eventually block is unknown.

Poole, a.k.a. Moot, responded to our email this morning, confirming that only Verizon Wireless customers were effected by the block - not FIOS/DSL customers. As for the reason for the block, he wrote, "None of the techs could give us a definitive answer. It took them hours to even figure out/acknowledge the block was occurring on their end."

Ya I found that part. However I read it after the main part. I did not notice it because it was tucked down. Still funny that they posted that when they did not have all the facts. *Amused. And a bit hungry*

The last time an ISP blocked 4chan it was only temporarily because of something to do with DDOS attacks. I doubt that this is anything different, since censoring what sites people could visit just opens them up to a huge amount of backlash. Not to mention they have no reason to censor anything, since they're not liable for what sites their users visit.

This happened a while ago/still happening. I was a /b/tard back then and they were very pissed. I live in Canada and have Bell, which wouldn't be an issue because Bell aren't that full of themselves.

I recently switched from Verizon to cable internet (Mediacom).  I don't give a shit about 4chan, but it's bullshit that they can decide what sites you can or can't visit.

Goodie, now let's get all the other ISPs in the world to band together and rid the internet of 4chan forever.

Let me know when they do something ACTUALLY annoying. Like ban GB.

Try explaining why our internet randomly dies out at least once a week (used to be once a day) which also means our phones don't work.

Blocking sites is better than knowing people are going to sites with child porn and being forced to take legal action. Saves paperwork, just blocking the sites wholesale.

I remember when 4chan forced thier creator into the top spot for times most influential person of the last 100 years or some shit, it was funny as hell until time banned all votes for said guy and 4chan decided to attack. Then it just got messy.

Call them and complain. I live on mountain, there's 2 feet of snow outside right now, and have never had my internet go out. "
My mom calls them and complains every week, and whenever they send someone out (if they do, most of the time they refuse) nothing is fixed.

In fact, the internet died out about 5 minutes ago.

@crusader8463: Only a coercive entity can censor something. If a commercial entity refuses to host content it doesn't like, it's not censoring anything, it's merely expressing its preferences.

For instance, if you don't have any books by Anne Rice on your bookshelf, you're not censoring Anne Rice, are you?

Yes, I know ISPs exist on a far wider scale, but as I said, it would only be censorship if Verizon was a coercive entity, they're not, they only give you internet access by your voluntary consent. If, on the other hand, the FCC banned American ISPs from connecting users to 4chan, that would be censorship, but this is not censorship, since you can choose other ISPs, or use their wired service.

it's like a message board that people upload images to. u should got to one called /b/, it's the one does a lot of things. the rest of the board are normal places. it's like an entire new place there. there is sometimes child pr0n there, for some sick reason.

i find it stupid for them to start blocking websites. i am kind of nervous that this is what is going to be a new type of fad. ISP are going to star blocking websites on people. it is their internet that they are using. this might lead to people dissing their ISP for a new ISP.

Great, I say go for it.

It's too bad the ISP I use doesn't block that shit hole. About a year or so back I went to that site to see what all the fuss was about. At work everything but news sites are blocked for the last several months and the only forums I go to on any sort of regular basis are this site and AVS when I'm anywhere outside of work, but I figured why the fuck not. I was told they have wacky pictures of cats on that shit, so I went there a handful of times. It wasn't really interesting to look at, wasn't funny at all. The first few times I went I had no idea why it was so "notorious" or why it was e-famous. The last time I went I was scrolling down one of the forums and one of the pictures on the left was of a girl, had to be about 3 or 4, with a fucking dick shoved in her face. I got out a "oh FUCK!" before I went apeshit on the back button, that shit genuinely disturbed me. Seeing that shit made me instinctively upset and angry. I hope the person that snapped that picture gets the life strangled out of him, I hope the person that posted it dies, and I hope that whole fucked up forum shits the bed.

Having it blocked is hardly a loss.

Even if it's just Verizon wireless... but... I've never even used a phone web browser, so I don't know if there is already some sort of precedent for the blocking of high-volume image/video downloading and/or porn filtering going on. Also can't see a source (no link as of this edit), so I won't throw any judgment at Verizon.

Though judging from some of the posts in this thread, I'm not even going to bother trying to explain why censoring a website (*any* website) is wrong, the implications of censorship on the internet, and why you should care.

I think it's fucked up as a precedent, but also hilarious since it's 4chan. But no matter how much of a distaste I have for 4chan, Verizon's behavior is not what America is about.

I'm sure someone has already suggested this, but AT&T should fund Anonymous and see to it that Verizon's 3G network is "taken care of."

Believe it or not that's one of the things Sarah Palin had written on her hand.
