Most game-site-bloggers this time of year do some sort of lame post about one game that they think is the best of the year, or hastily throw together a least of their top ten games.
Well, not me. See, I go all the way, and have my own awards. I did this last year on IGN, and since I have completely abandoned blogging there (because their redesign of the blogging stuff was absolutely terrible), the Moosies are going to be here this year!
But...The awards aren't today. See, I still have two games in particular to play before I can even release the nominations for the awards, let alone make definite decisions on what wins the awards. I plan on releasing the results of the awards on either the 31st of Dec, or the 1st of Jan, and I'll put out the nominations before then.
But I will at least put the awards here, along with brief descriptions of each. Bear in mind that the award titles are meant to be goofy and/or stupid. Also, the ordering of these is not final, as I basically wrote them down in NotePad as each idea popped into my head.
Abe Lincoln Award for Best Use of Facial Hair
As a bearded man, I have a fine appreciation for facial hair, and feel that many games don't use it sufficiently, and like it when games feature characters with majestic facial hair."Don't Always Count Out the New Guy" Award for Best New Protagonist.
Every year that goes by, new characters are created. Not all are created equal, and this goes to the one who stood out the most from the crowd (for good reasons).Mel Blanc Award for Best Voice Actor
Voice acting is a fine art, and it takes a good amount of skill to portray a character in a believable and enjoyable fashion. This award goes to the individual that I think spoke at a level above everyone else."You, the Master of Unlocking," Award for Best Overall Voice Acting.
We've come a long way since the days of Resident Evil style voice acting (so bad it's good), and while some games are still that bad, many are absolutely excellent, and this award goes to the game that out-does the rest.Multimedia Celebrity Poker Award for Best "Celebrity" Cast.
This year was notable for having several high profile games whose voice casts were filled with "celebrities", and this award goes to the one that I feel has the best cast of these so called "celebrities.""Cool, Whatever You Say, Slick" Award for Best Supporting Character.
Having a good main character is always important, but almost as important is having a good supporting character to back him/her up.Leslie Nielsen Award for Funniest Game.
Being funny is hard, no matter what the medium, but especially hard when dealing with an interactive medium filled with digital characters. This goes to the game that made me laugh the most."In Soviet Russia, Award Wins You!" Award for Best Use of Russian Bad Guys.
Some people think that having Russians as the bad guys is cliched, and a leftover of the Cold War. I think those people are crazy, and I love the fact that Russians are still the villains in several high profile games this year, and this award goes to the one that I feel uses them the best."I Just Beat that Guy and...OH CRAP A SECOND FORM!" Award for Best Bosses.
Lots of games these days don't even have boss battles anymore, but this award goes to the ones that I feel had the best bosses this year.Errol Flynn Award for Best Swashbuckler/Slash'em'up.
Sometimes all I want to do in a game is cut dudes in half (or equivalent melee weapon based violence), and this award goes to the game that I feel was the best in the genre of slash'em'up.Henry Jones Jr. Award for Best Action-Adventure Game.
Goes to the action-adventure game that I think was the best of the year.Nosferatu Award for Best Survivor Horror Game.
It's hard to make games scary, or even to have a mood of being at least similar to being scary. This award goes to the game that I felt is the best of the genre of survivor horror.Bob Goddard Award for Best Regular-Ass RPG.
This is the best game I played that I feel can firmly be defined as an RPG.Bob Goddard Award for Best Irregular-Ass RPG.
With the ways in which genres are being combined these days, there are a good number of games that are like RPGs in a lot of ways, but not in others. This award goes to the best game that I feel is almost an RPG, but not quite."They'll Never Check the Cardboard Box" Award for Best Stealth Game.
Most stealth games aren't that good. This goes to the one that I think was best.Michael Bay Award for Most Ridiculous Game.
I like my games to be nice and crazy, sort of like a Michael Bay movie (just with more story). This goes to the game that I think best captures that feel of constant ridiculosity. You know, things like making up words like ridiculosity.Rob Zombie Award for Best Use of Gore.
As the technology powering games improves, it inevitably leads to more realistic and more over the top levels of gore. This goes to the game that I think used gore the best in 2010."Hey, What's that Over in the Opposite Direction of the Main Story?" Award for Best Open World.
It's tough making big open worlds, and this award goes to the one that made the best open world."I Have No Real Friends" Award for Best Multiplayer.
While I usually play games only for the single-player, sometimes I want to be playing against real people (usually online).1.21 Gigawatts Award for Best Game From the Past that I Played (for the first time) this Year.
No one gets around to playing all the games of a year in that year, and this award goes to the best game from years past that I played this year."OO! Pretty..." Award for Best Graphics Technology (console).
Best graphics on consoles. Pretty straight forward."OO! Pretty..." Award for Best Graphics Technology (handheld).
Same as above, just for handhelds.Campbell's Soup Award for Best Artistic Design.
Not all games look good from a technical point of view, but sometimes the artistic design is good enough to make up for it."I Love Cutscenes!" Award for Best Story.
In this day and age, you can't base games solely on their gameplay, because often the story is as big a focus, if not even more so. And don't worry, I'll keep this award spoiler free.Beethoven Award for Best Music.
Whether licensed or original, this goes to the game that I think had the best music of 2010."The Publisher Executives Love You." Award for Best Overall DLC.
Goes to the game whose DLC was good and plentiful."Where's My Credit Card?" Award for Best Individual DLC.
This DLC thingy was better than the rest."If Only I had More Money..." Award for Game I Wish I Played Most (but didn't).
Best game I didn't play. And then I have award for best game for each system, and best overall game, but you get the point, and I didn't realize I had this many awards until I started typing them all at once. Make sure to check in for updates within the next week or so.
