The most F***ED UP business -these guys are extorting me for cash

Alright, I'll be perfectly honest and say that I was arrested not that long ago. It was a bullcrap arrest and a case of mistaken identity, but I had to stay in jail overnight and was released the next day without any charges or being required to go to court. But later in the mail I get a letter from a local website (I have redacted these for privacy reasons of course).

Who would go through the time and effort to print up all that stuff and distribute it? I bet the whole thing is a hoax. Still definitely a scam, but I doubt they would actually take the time and spend the money to do any of that.

That doesn't look real.

Well, if it was a bullshit charge and they go around publishing stuff saying you are a criminal then that is libel since you were never charged/found guilty. If they tell people then it's slander. And this certainly seems like extortion. So nail the fuckers to the wall in court.

This, come on. The things they threaten with are more expensive than what they're asking you. Also, if you're pretty sure it was a crap arrest and nothing major I'd be delighted in your stead to see my picture all over town and on billboards. Their money to waste, I'll fucking revel in their loss!

If someone got killed in a DUI accident and the guy "got away with it" I could easily see a situation were lots of people would look for revenge like this.

Well, the implication was that the crime this guy supposedly did wasn't anything bad like accidental homicide. And if something like that did happen, then the whole community would likely already know, and if they didn't, the person who was going to distribute the stuff would just do it, and not go through this scam company.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to believe if someone got killed in a DUI accident and the guy "got away with it," chances are he probably wasn't guilty. Otherwise, he'd have been convicted of vehicular manslaughter or murder.

Either way, if a dude is acquitted and a third-party like this tries to accuse them of the crime they've already been cleared of, that's pretty much step one towards a libel/slander suit unless they're some crazy case like OJ Simpson where they win the criminal case but lose the civil suit.

The dude running that site is an idiot. Not only is he engaging in morally dubious, potentially illegal activity, but the people he's blackmailing are those that are willing to break the law.

The news story talked about him having to move his family due to death threats, well no shit. What do you think would happen when you threaten criminals?
