No they didn't. There was a poll and the public decided on Halo, but it was completely independent from the people who run the LHC and they said "We're flattered that the RSC should take such an interest in our public image, and we find the name Halo to be apposite. However, the LHC will not be changing its name".

And the best article on this is the Telegraphs article on it. Purely because it says: "Fed up with "the contrived acronyms that plague the world of science," the RSC says" LOL!!!!

Is that what a Halo is? Well, now I'm just laughing my ass off. (I've never played Halo, you see.)

That sucks. "Halo" is a much better name than "large hadron collider" for the simple fact that it's easier to remember. >_>
