Thinking of getting an ipod touch, but have a few questions.

1. other than it not having telephone functionality, how's it different from an iphone, keeping in mind I'd be getting a 3rd generation one?
2. is it compatible with my current non-itunes music collection?

1. I think the only difference is lack of phone capability 
2. If they are MP3 files they can go on your Touch

I guess it may sound obvious but it should be added that the lack of having a phone also includes the touch not having a built in voice receiver thingy, so no voice memos or any app that uses voice. Though I believe the current models have support for headsets or something (don't quote me on that, not entirely sure).

Well damn.  That doesn't unsell me on it or anything, but that's a bummer that I can't get that autotune app that Vinny has "

1- the touch is not as thick as an iphone and some apps won't be compatible with it. The headphone output is at the bottom instead than on top. 
2- i thnk you'll need itunes, but can add any mp3s files in it and then synch them to your touch, vids need to be in mp4 format.

It's thinner than an iPhone, but it doesn't have the built-in mic or camera.  The earbuds that come with it actually have a mic built into it on the volume control I believe, but it's not really needed.

Don't dunk it in jelly.

You give up phone/voice but get more storage in return at the same price point.

The iPod lacks the Mic and some sensors for motion.

1. It doesn't have mic/phone capabilities
 
2. It probably will as long as its not in some goofy format
 
I got one and im happy with it, i'd recommend getting one.

1. iPod Touch is an iPhone without a phone, a camera, and a mic. 
2. You should be able to move your library into iTunes -- I didn't have any trouble. 
3. Dude, apps.   APPS.

I finally got one.  64 gb, too!  Now I need apps!  Tell me about some apps!  I don't mean games, I mean stuff like the shotgun pro (which I'm loving) or I am T-Pain (awesome). The stupider the better!

Here is my advice, dont get a iTouch. As far as I'm concerned all mp3 players are dead. All you need is a phone that can take micro sd and get a 16g or 32g micro sd card. If music isnt why your getting it then you might as well get the iphone. In my opinion the iTouch isnt worth it at all.

Neither the iPod touch nor the iPhone play .flac files, so if you're into lossless audio you'll have to do some convertin'. Same goes for playing .mkv/h.264 files, which are a bitch to re-encode. 
Really, lossless audio is the way to go. Chances are you pirate all your music anyway, so might as well go the extra mile for the best quality possible -- it's not like hard drive space is exactly hard to come by nowadays.
 
As for apps:
If the 5-0 app works on the touch (probably not?) grab it. It's so great. GiantBomb app is an obvious shoe-in, too.

I bought some headphones with mics off of ebay for like 2 bucks. They work fine but, as with all headphones with built in mics, you'll have to listen through the headphones when the mics plugged in.

I don't know why it even exists . the Iphone has it all . I can't imagine carrying two devices. God what's wrong with humans . Thank God I'm an alien
