This valedictorian wrote a brilliant speech
Best video I've seen for a while; she pretty much just articulated my exact thoughts on formal edumacation :o
I can't remember what my valedictorian's speech was about, but I do remember there being a female student who spoke at the ceremony about nonsense. "People are mean to convicts, my dad is a convict, so don't be mean to convicts!" ugh. I can't even remember what my brother's valedictorian said either, and that only happened 2 months ago. Mostly those speeches come in two flavors, "Look how awesome I am and all I have achieved!" or your typically cliche speech about the future and that we all matter to the world. sigh
Well, it's not just the education system. Our whole lives are like that. It's one simple task at a time in order to achieve one greater, over-arching goal. Successful people are the ones who can balance their lives between the simple tasks and the big goal.
My valedictorian had one of the best speeches I've ever heard. He basically called everyone else an idiot and sang "Down" and "Tik Tok" in a ridiculously monotone voice.
This was interesting, but I don't 100% agree. I see what she's saying, but at the same time it was too personal for me to relate to.
meh, i can guarantee you she will working for a massive for-profit company and voting republican within ten years.
...haha jk there aren't going any jobs in ten years
I agree with her. She'll probably end up being running for congress or something, which would suit her fine... but ultimately nothing will really be accomplished. It's sad...
And man... the kids who were struggling to be in her position must feel like shiiiiiiiit.
Wow, this was a brilliant speech. The people behind her didn't seem overjoyed with what she said but I'm glad that she could spread an important message to people and wasn't afraid of deviating from the kind of traditional speech the officials would have deemed more appropriate.
A lot of what she described is an ongoing problem, for the world we live in to continue to run the way it does our system of capitalism must perpetuate and in such a system the easiest way for employers to sort those fitting for a job from those unfitting for a job is to look at their qualifications. It is therefore in the best interests of students to make achieving the highest grades their primary goal so that they can achieve higher job prospects and it is in the interests of the educational establishments teaching them to do the same thing so that the students' grades reflect well upon the establishment. It is unfortunate that such a system exists where students do not learn as much as they could do and where students who can perform well in tests and coursework are at a greater advantage than smarter students who do not possess such skills. To an extent jobs where you are judged on work portfolios help against this issue but obviously for the majority of jobs such a system is not applicable.
