So I've just come back from my first semester of University for Christmas, and I was really looing forward to giving MW2 multiplayer a lot of attention; but alas what I found wasn't the fun and addicting hour consuming experience that was CoD 4, but simply me getting shot in the back or just by people in windows i couldn't see over and over and over and over again. If it wasn't the campers that truly piss me off it's the incredibly overpowered dual shottys, those things have a bigger range than Brian Blessed's bellowing voice.
I thought after getting to know the maps I'd have a better time with the game, but it hasn't happened so far perhaps because the majority of the maps are horseshit, sure they look pretty but there is just way too much stuff in them and too many hidyholes for campers. The only map I truly enjoy is Terminal.
So yes I am really dissapointed with the multiplayer, and if I could some up my feelings towards the game it would be simply.
I like Moderm warfare 2, I just don't like the people who play it.
Thoroughly dissapointed with MW2 multiplayer

I've learned that I do much better at this game when I take it slow. I hardly ever sprint anymore. Another thing that annoys me is that whenever I'm waiting to be put in a game I'll sometimes get stuck on the map Rust sometimes in a mode that I didn't even choose, and the match will literally never end.

The shotguns are getting nerfed, but it takes time to get the patch approved by sony and microsoft. It should be very soon though.
MW2 is a lot better than CoD4 in every way except for the playerbase, simply put, the game is so similar in so many ways, that people that got very hardcore at the last game are still hardcore in this game. The longer you wait to start playing the multiplayer, the better everyone else gets.
Your problem was that you waited way too long to try and start playing the game, and because of that, everyone has had a month and a half headstart on you to learn the maps and the tricks. So the fact that you are suprised that the game is tough to play online now is amazing, its the same for every game.
So suck it up and try playing a bit more, you will find that its really awesome.
Also, Modern Warfare 2 is a tactical shooter, so if you don't like campers, why not go around and kill them from behind.. or counter snipe them, or just shoot them with your gun.. The levels are big enough that it really isn't an issue if you play properly.
Also I would say try playing mercenary team deathmatch to avoid parties since sometimes that can be really unfair. And if you want to get good at the maps, try playing search and destroy, even if you get killed quickly, you can see how your teammates are playing and where all the good spots are to go to and avoid.
Learnnnnnnn.
I used to enjoy this game's multiplayer a fuckton. But as time progressed, and people leveled up and got new weapons, and figured out the different glitches in the game, I just can't seem to have fun anymore. Every game is just a major annoyance of getting killed by the same dude who is abusing some aspect of the game. Most common being care package glitching or dual-1887s.
And no, this game is not a tactical shooter. It lost any sense of tactical play when everyone started running around with akimbo weapons or spriting around at lightspeed knifing people.
The first thing I noticed about the MP is that it was a hell of a lot easier than World at War's mp section.
Having never played the original COD4 multiplayer, I love MW2's multiplayer though it may just be for that exact reason. Yes, there are those that love camping but on the plus side there's nothing more satisfying than working out where they are from Killcam, sneaking up behind them and scalping them! Halo 3 used to have its fair share of campers too, but you didn't have a feature like Killcam to show you where they were after.
The last Call of Duty game I played online was World at War, but with it's sludgy and dull brown-green maps it got old very quickly for me.
I didn't suck at CoD4, but I do at this with a k/d of 0.75/1 which is shocking for me. Not sure I've ever played a multiplayer game with a negative k/d except my early goings into counterstrike.
What I think tends this game to a campfest is the very little HP that people have and the ease at which it is to kill someone, it's not like counterstrike where you have to accomodate for recoil or like Gears of War where you have to be skilled with the shotgun, you can quite easily sit in a window and get a few kills.
I'm absolutely terrible at the MW2 but I'm having fun nonetheless. I have gotten familiar with some of the weapons, tactics and maps lately though so I'm getting a bit better.
" @PeasForFees: I disagree. I define the tiers of popularity as follows
For example GTA4 is Mainstream, but isn't Bandwagon. Bandwagon implies there is a significant group who plays it just because it's the current 'thing to play'. Something that non-gamers play for the sake of doing what's currently the thing kids do. That's not to say that all players of Bandwagon games are bandwagoners themselves. Just most. "

Are you saying that most gamers don't play Halo? And that most of the people that play it are "bandwagoners?"

I'm really hoping it stops being so popular in a year or so and calms down to the level of Call of Duty 4 this summer because that was the most fun I'd had with that game. Thhough, with the way this is set up, even when it chills out, I still think camping will be everywhere.
NO EXCEPTIONS! You say your a Pseudo-intellectual well "Fan-boys" or Group 10 find your logical outlook on games retarded and they think you should just shoot stuff and shut the fuck up! Have a nice day!" @Evilsbane: I don't fit in any of those...except for pseudo-intellectual, but I don't use voice-chat so no-one knows it. Do I still get banned?!?! "

Fuck me and my nihilistic tendencies.
" @MrKlorox said:MW2 is just as much for 12 year olds as Halo is. Like 80% of the voices I hear on Xbox Live or PSN sound like little kids, that's why I use the mute all button. I love seeing the mic symbol appear over someones corpse right after I kill them in Uncharted 2." @nrain said:I would say that mainstream is Halo with its 12 year old audience and that is the main demographic for it, "Bandwagon" as you call it is mainstream. "" I like Moderm warfare 2, I just don't like the people who play it. "This is known as the Halo effect. It's what happens when a game goes beyond mainstream into bandwagon territory. "
I really like the whole unlocking guns and perks non stop in MW2 but most people are so much better then me at the game that it's just not fun anymore.
@nrain:
Maybe the maps aren't horseshit and you just suck? I don't mean that in a negative way either, I suck too probably much worse than you do actually.
All of the perks, and twerks aside, I feel the level design is FAR inferior to COD4. The overall feel is EXTREMELY weighted towards campers. It doesnt help that these people have bled into objective based games. Several times I have played sabotage and literally noone has even tried to pickup the bomb aside from me. its just a bunch of people concerned about their k/d ratio. Way to many of these campers find a spot that works for them, barricade in, lay down and break out the thermal heartbeat monitor, it disgusts me.
I have doubts about how much you will like this game. Unless they have completely revolutionized the way you play this, Starcraft 2 is going to be another game where your success hinders on your building order, more so than skill. It isn't really until you get into the really good starcraft that you will be challenging you skill.
