Watch Breaking Bad.
I understand what you are saying, and I get that feeling from TV too rather often, but Breaking Bad only ever once made me question the reality of that world or those characters. It really is the best TV series on right now. It is like the next evolution in what TV writing and directing could be, an actual noticeable leap in quality.
Yeah Breaking Bad is just, so goddamn fantastic. I'm watching this show and just go "yes, YES! That's how someone would ACTUALLY react!"
May sound trivial, but the fact that Skyler actually identifies that shit is wrong with Walt is already a huge deal to me. In most shows character can act as weird as possible and none bothers until the script requires them to take note. I was so happy that Skyler isn't just your usually dumb side character. And just about everything feels believable. Sure some characters make terrible life choices but only in justifiable scenarios / under big pressure.
As someone else said, people complain a lot about Skyler, I personally wonder why. In my eyes she has every right to bitch about the shit that Walt got them into and she appears to be rather holding back. She slept with Ted? Well fuck, her Husband kept lying to her, became a drug supplier and basically shat on the family's safety. I don't know all the details but at no point I felt like "You whore! Why would you do that!!!" I could always at least identify a bit with decisions the characters make in this show.
The Wire is also pretty great, although I didn't enjoy the last season too much. (Still very good)
One of the shows that is so stupid by now that it lowers my IQ is Dexter.
It's basically the opposite of Breaking Bad. The further the show moves along the more often I think to myself "WHAT? How can you NOT notice that something's going on here?" or "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?"
I mean let's be honest, as "careful" as Dexter is, his identity would've been revealed to everyone by the end of season 1 already. Within season 5 you cannot even take that aspect seriously anymore.
But it's not just that all characters are stupid, the side plots for the seasons are very often godawful soap operas. Almost always including that ridiculous character Laguerta, who keeps changing from being nice to a complete asshole every second episode.
The writers aren't able to create an actually interesting and content providing main plot so they weave in soap opera entertainment as fillers.
Oh and The Walking Dead. Well I don't like it much either. The fact that they included a child character that keeps acting stupid whenever he's told not to act stupid - why am I even watching that?
On top of that, I'm always annoyed by the very basics of Zombie movies. I know, you can just say in this franchise Zombies just live forever, need no food etc. But I've yet to hear a halfway appropriate explanation why that is possible. Why is a braindead, completely fucked body able to survive way longer than a real Human without e.g. food. I mean there cannot be a satisfiable explanation for that and thus they just leave it out, which is kinda fine. But it annoys me personally. Would be nice if they at least could make it so, that the characters wonder why those Zombies can live for so long.
In that regard I have to mention, that the only "Zombie" movie I actually like is 28 Days Later. I know it technically isn't a Zombie movie but well, the rage virus works similarly. And the best in that movie, not only is it just well done and the characters are believable to me, no, the fucking raged zombie dudes actually die of starvation!!!
(28 Weeks Later though is one of the dumbest movie's I've ever seen though)
