Being unemployed is only fun for so long then you realize you can't have fun without any money. I guess its one more part of life's cruel joke you can't have fun when you have money because the job you have is probably not paying enough and is kicking your ass by the time your finally free in the evening.

Meh, I'm 20, work part time for minimum wage and have plenty of fun. Being unemployed is terrible though, I took off an entire year after I graduated to do jack shit, and the back half of that year wasn't all that great.

I just graduated a year and half worthless occupational health and safety management program, the bright side is that I barely paid for it due to the great Canadian government's EI program but now I'm completely w/o any cash flow is the real bummer.  The college program was worthless but it got me into a routine now without any routine I find myself somewhat lost.

Being unemployed sucks pretty hard. I'd be one of those that says that they'd rather be unemployed than work at McDonald's, but in all honesty, it's really not that bad (well, depending on what you do. Being the grill cook was easy as hell and I didn't have to deal with annoying customers.). Sitting around having nothing to do all the time but playing video games sounds like an awesome idea, but after you've done it for so long, you realize just how much doing nothing sucks. Don't get me wrong, I love gaming, but I need a mandatory break from it to actually work and get out of the house.

@jasius: Shit, worthless you say?  I'm graduated with a BS in bio and was thinking of going into a 2 year masters program for occupational health and safety.  Is the job market for that career bad or is it just the wrong type of degree to get one of those jobs?

Yea I live in a small hick community in Newfoundland so that really limits the options for fun, unless you enjoy being drunk daily(which some people do and hey have a drink for yourself if you're one of them).
I hate to say it but the thrill of video games seems to be loosing its allure somewhat, it just randomly happened.
Can't believe its only been 4 days since I've been unemployed and I've gotten to this point already, another thing about school is no matter how bad the program is completing tests gives you some menial sense of achievement which I guess I need now heh.

Well the thing is I took an OHS diploma course at Keyin College some dumpy private institute. But the people I've been talking to in the field with real success have started a career in some other aspect of construction and have moved into safety that way. Right now I can only go on the Canadian market, there are ALOT of small private dumps like the one I just graduated from pumping out these safety officers. If you have connections in companies that you know you can get a great job from then go for it, but if not then proceed with caution the market WILL be flooded by the time you get out.

Yeah, unemployment sucks. I suppose if it is self inflicted and you can go back to a good job at any time, then it might be different. However, if you've lost your job and/or can't find a job it's absolutely miserable.

Gaming is so much more fulfilling when you're using it to escape the stresses of the work/school day. I remember back in the day when i was in college the solitaire that came with windows was terrifically fun when I had a paper to write or a test to study for, but as soon as finals were over solitaire was the epitome of boring.

Just to give a touch more insight into this i know a girl that did a BS in Nutrition and she did a post degree diploma program in OHS now shes doing quality testing on fish in a fish plant, not using the safety aspect of her education at all.

You know it doesn't cease to depress me how more and more people I know with degrees are getting less and less work in their discipline. It seems that right now trades and well I thought OHS was the way to go, but even that at the moment is going through a rough patch. The economy right now just sucks in general. At least you spent those years doing what you wanted right?

Well I might be in your shoes tomorrow when I deal with some bullsh!t . I hate the fact I take orders from people who either didn't go to college or went to college for something that has nothing to do with the business they are in. Yet I do have a degree in the concern. So many times I have wanted to "rage quit" my job.

Here's the worse part. Being unemployed and having a family to take care of. And you can't get unemployment because the government won't extend it.

Yeah I read up on what they offer. Turns out it only lasts a year. I can only go to certain colleges. Since it only covers it for a year, and I'm 6 months in, I have to find a college that only goes for 6 months. Also, during the 6 months I was on EI, I was looking for work, but apparently no one is hiring. Well, the people that are hiring found someone better. I guess 4 years of working at a casino isn't enough to get a job at a bank. Or McDonalds.

You in America? In Canada its still only a select number of places but you get living allowance once your EI runs out which if you fill out the papers right(hint hint) is about the same amount as your EI was.

Jesus four days? Try four years. I hate it so much because I'm at the point where I hate having so much free time with nothing to do because I find myself over indulging in my hobbies to the point where I'm not enjoying them anymore. Yet at the same time I know that if I did find a job I would go nut's by the sudden lack of free time and not being able to do whatever I want when ever I want. Made increasingly frustrating by suddenly having money to buy the things that I have wanted to do but not having the time to enjoy them. I would kill for a part time job. One where I work for four to five days then have two or three off or one where I work a day on  then a day off.

My dream job is working as a ferrymen down on the local ferry. All you do is stand there and open the gate for the car's to leave the ferry then walk to the other side and repeat. The best part? You get like $20-$30 an hour because the job is only six months long. So you work for six months and earn the same pay as working a full year, I think it works our some where between $40k-$60k depending on what you do on the ferry, but then get half the year off in vacation. God dam that would be amazing.

Yeah. In California. Me and my girl are really thinking about moving to Washington. A lot more jobs and it's cheaper to live out here. I wish it was that easy to get money to pay for my expenses. The only other option I have is Welfare, but they only give men money for food. Apparently it's not worth giving us a roof over our head.

I've been partially unemployed for almost a year. The downtime is almost depressing, I feel you. But I decided to take the initiative and got a gym membership. Lost 25 pounds so far. : 3
Also, I overcame my fear of driving, and I'm now striving for my license. Because let's face it: Your job prospects in a small town with no personal transportation other than your own two feet are EXTREMELY limited. Not to mention I'll need a way to pay for the gas, and insurance, and repairs!

Well it was from a private college year and half diploma program, plus I was sponsored under EI to do it so I was getting paid while doing it, not alot of money but still some money.

Damn, the current state of the economy is depressing. Even though I don't want to, I've been thinking about reenlisting. It would be just my luck if the economy recovered as soon as I signed those papers.

Sorry but it was a combination of moving house, and getting lucky.

I had no work experience and very few qualifications.
Just before Xmas is the best time to get a job for obvious reasons.
If all else fails.. volunteer, little or no pay, but a month of that is a month of experience, and they may offer a job if yer good enough

To do that I'd have to have gotten a degree first, this is only a diploma good for nothing at all beyond what it is.

I had a worse GPA, less contacts, less references, less work experience, and less research experience than most of my friends in my B.S. Chemical Engineering curriculum. I stayed on for an extra year to get an M.S., though. Several of my B.S. buddies still don't have work, but I have a job lined up and ready to go. There were a lot of other factors as well, but the graduate degree is a HUGE benefit in the job market (don't be fooled though; you don't actually get any smarter, you just look more appealing).

it's alright when you have both of the world. working can be fun but it takes a long time. not having a job you can do anything you want any time. it can get boring sometimes of doing nothing all day. work you can be doing hard work and get paid shit.
