My point is I thought that was hilarious when I was studying it for history, BiggerBellend, so I'm not really bothered if you don't find it to be approaching humor.
US08 Presidential Election Discussion
This has to be, say, the fifth time where I have to point out that not everything I say is meant to be taken as a gag.
This has to be, say, the fifth time where I have to point out that nothing you say contributes to these forums.
"Always the way with you. You start shit then decide it's stupid."
I start shit? You find every topic I post in and say some obnoxious comment about me unprovoked. I decided to stop bickering because I had a shitty day and don't want to deal with your crap. I'll take the higher ground and stop. You should do the same.

Is the near 3,000 post count meant to make your opinion valid to me?
Lol, check mate?"
Go watch Zeitgeist. Your opinion isn't valid to anyone, it's all tinfoil hat crap.
"HandsomeDead said:Because, for example, I mention to vote McCain because I put a bet on and you're all over it like a fly on shit, or, in this thread, I mention FDR and you're up in my grill. I'm sick of spelling it out for you but since you're feeling a little fragile right now, i'll go ahead and say that while not everything I say is meant to be funny, not everything I say is a fucking jibe at you."Always the way with you. Get off my case.
Stayed up to watch this election, I knew Obama had it sewn up (been monitoring all the coverage for weeks), but it was nice to see it happen.
Hopefully he can deliver, he definitely has the ability, but I hope he sorts out healthcare for all you Americans, I genuinely feel sorry for you knowing that you can get denied treatment for preexisting conditions and we can just stroll into any hospital and get it no questions asked on the NHS (which has been getting increasingly privitised in the last few years, worryingly). Don't understand why a lot of Americans are so opposed to a nationalised system. Then again, perhaps the power of the health insurance lobby is too overbearing.
Glad he's willing to sit down with "enemies" and have a more responsible foreign policy, hopefully he can make Israel stop murdering Palestinian civilians on top of that.
I'd like to know something, though. Why is Socialism considered "bad" in the US? As a Socialist I get quite angry when it's bandied about as if it were a negative thing, same goes for Atheism (though I can't even imagine being in the position of a Muslim though, the religion was equated to terrorism in a not too subtle way, whether intentionally or not, by both candidates, not to mention Sarah Palin [God help us]).

Exactly. The way you solve things is to sit down with your opponent, look him in the eyes, and talk. It's called diplomacy. Telling them to kiss our ass before we grace them with our presence will just cause more problems.

The fact the 9/11 attackers were trained in the US with US money makes the whole right-wing look like phenomenal idiots.

The whole right-wing looked like phenomenal idiots since Reagan was in office. Finally, the country picked up on that and now we're back on track.
Don't be dicks.
First of all, FDR and the Japanese deal or Lincoln having slaves can be attributed to the times in which they lived. Now, we look back and say that school segregation was horrible and anyone who supported it was horrible, but respectable people truly believed in the "separate but equal" philosophy in its time. Today, people are split on abortion, and someday, people will look back and say either "They were all murderers!" or "They all hated women's rights!"
BiggerBomb, you're forgetting how influential Reagan was on both sides, and how, at times, both Bushes were immensely popular. Actually, at times, they had higher approval ratings then any president since Eisenhower. The approval quickly dropped, but still, you can't ignore those facts.
What it comes down to is what people remember and what historians write about the presidents. If everyone remembered FDR's racism against the Japanese, hiding his polio, his poor relationship with his wife, and attempts to seize greater power in many ways including expanding the supreme court, he wouldn't be so loved. If we all studied the great relations Nixon built with China, his bringing an end to Vietnam, the great impact he had on school de-segregation, ending the gold standard, establishing the EPA and OSHA, and aspirations for health care rather then Watergate, Nixon would be loved.

And everyone worships Reagan because they do not acknowledge that it was he who started the neo-conservative movement. The shift in party ideals and methods did not occur until well after his presidency, but he is largely to blame for the direction the right-wing has taken. Please, do not try to tell me that Bush has been victimized and he deserves the approval rating he had before the country learned of his rather ruthless use of power and the deception of the American people his administration encouraged. The fact of the matter is that the man is the single worst President in our nation's history. He was not at the wrong place at the wrong time, he was tested with a disaster and failed to handle it at so many levels.
Any competent leader could have dealt accordingly with the mess, instead he used the events to further his agenda with divisive politics.
As for Nixon with healthcare, I think you should watch the movie Sicko. Nixon was briefed by his staff, advising him of the corruption within the health care industries and how it could be manipulated for greater profits and less coverage. He "ok'd" it and veiled this with a pretty speech. The man took advantage of the people to inject more capital into the industry, allowing health care to devolve into the clusterfuck of greed it has become today.
As for me mentioning that Lincoln had slaves, I was being faceitious alluding to how FDR's biggotry did not affect his leadership skills and the prosperity his administration brought to our country. Lincoln was one of our country's greatest Presidents, the hypocrisy he enacted by being a slaveowner is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
Anyone who did believe in a seperate but equal philosophy cannot be regarded as respectable. My grandfather (Papa,) lived in a highly racist district here in New York and he worked to bring the first Jew and African American into the country clubs and advocated equality in schools and society. People knew what was right and wrong, they just chose to ignore it. With that in mind, you cannot respect those actions.
Don't call me a dick.
I was telling both you and HandsomeDead not to be dicks. It was a comment about your behavior, not beliefs.
I wasn't saying that the Bushes were victimized, I was saying that once upon a time, everyone loved them. They changed that with poor decision making.
So, anyone who believed in the separate but equal philosophy cannot be regarded as respectable, but slave owners and bigots can, as long as they were good leaders?

No, you cannot regard the actions as respectable and you cannot say that they were justified because of the times.
"Don't know why nobody in the US really called out the Bush family before the last couple of years, they did it to further their own monetary interests, it's not rocket science.
Horrible, horrible greed at the top that costs lives."
The greed was largely Cheney's, Bush is best blamed for his stupidity.
