I don't think there was much of a cultural difference between this decade and the decade before. Maybe people have worried more about terrorism since 9/11 but overall I'd say culturally western society hasn't changed which is interesting because I think there were major differences between the 80's, 70's, 60's, 50's and 40's. What do you guys think, are there any major cultural difference between the 90's and the 00's.
Was there a cultural difference between the 90's and the 2000's? (Topic from 2009)
There's lots of differences, especially cultural. From the early 90's when almost no people had access to the internet to now with 1.4 billion people with personal internet access. The way people spend their time, the movie, music, and game industries...
Furthermore, much of the changes in the last 20 years have been more deep and significant than the superficial changes in some previous time periods.
I guess its because we have lived through these decades so recently that we don't think of the big changes.
Communication and access to any bit of information at any time of day from any place in the world. That wasn't the norm in the 90s. Internet, cell phones, notebooks, handhelds, wifi, all these things reached mass acceptance over the last decade.
Also the war on terror took center stage for good or bad and that changed the way people think about security.
Depends, Television wise, a lot of channels were better in the 90's. Specifically Viacom owned channels.
" Let's just say the 2000's is an improvement on the 90's, no offense. "Based on what? That's not me being a nostalgic fool, it's a genuine question. Besides technology, with the war on terror being a main issue for a full decade now, the 90s seemed like a better time for everyone.

The start of the 90's was mired with the tail end of the 80's, with its horrible fashion and music. The 90's weren't so bad by the middle, but as you said, tech sucked hard compared to 00's. I think any decade would struggle to compare with the 00's, the transformative effects of large-scale internet access were unprecedented. The whole of society is netwroked to a higher degree.
But most of all...
Wiki.
Fucking.
Pedia.
Research is so much easier now.
" @ThePhantomnaut said:I see what you did there." Hardcore punk turned into a mockery. "Hardcore punk is a mockery in and of itself. "
In the early 90's you had to go to something called a "library" and read something called "books" to get the information that you needed. Today you pull out your mobile phone and get mad when it takes 30 seconds for Wikipedia/Google to load because you only get 2 bars where you're at.
When I think of the 90s, I think of Full House, Family Matters, OJ Simpson murder trial, the Olsen Twins, Clinton, Baywatch, annoying AOL trial CDs, the SNES, and white-washed, high-rise jeans.
When I think of now, I think of iPods, widescreen TVs, fake tans, and the death of the Dreamcast.
"Furthermore, much of the changes in the last 20 years have been more deep and significant than the superficial changes in some previous time periods. "How so? Because I would certainly argue that the changes of each time period represent what was important to those times in every degree. Obviously things may seem superficial to us now--but even the change to American Impressionalism could be considered superficial. That doesn't mean it wasn't a huge renaissance in our culture.
The world seems much faster now than in the 90s, and the "technological tentativeness" seems to have evaporated completely. There has been a MAJOR shift into more extreme liberalism in most sections of the nation, it would seem, and there has been a much higher adaptation of the "let's point fingers and blame someone" approach, both in politics and in society.
Since I was barely alive during the 90s, I really only think of the Grunge era. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, etc. I don't know what else went down during the 90s, other than slow dial-up and some TV shows.
Right now, music is crappy. (sure there is still some good music but good luck finding it) Technology has grown.
I'd rather have better music than better technology to be honest.

If you aren't using Wikipedia during research, you're doing it wrong. Wikipedia gives concise summaries of often confusing or complex things, but most important of all, it collates research other people have already done. For instance, when I had to do research on social dominance for my Psych class, I spent hours searching for actual definitions of the involved terms. Trawling through journal articles is a nightmare because it can be hard to tell whether something will be helpful or not until you've already started reading it.
Then I went to Wiki, which directed me straight to a series of 100% related peer reviewed journal articles. It saved a crap-load of time wading through irrelevant materials by directing me straight to the good stuff.
" @Hailinel said:And I can go right in and edit the article on social dominance to fuck it up. If I'm subtle enough, it might not even be caught until quite some time has passed. If you're depending on Wikipedia, you're an idiot." @adam_grif said:If you aren't using Wikipedia during research, you're doing it wrong. " Did you not pay attention? No, but you can edit out citations entirely.
I use it to find external references that they are citing. What are you going to do, break the URL? Whoopdy do, I'm no worse off than when I started looking. You can't edit Science Journal articles. "

/thread" The 90s:
2000s:
"
in summation, 1990's > Death by snu-snu > 2000's
though, I'll admit ALOT of amazing stuff have come out of the 2000's but man... alot of bad things too lol
" 1993 - Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains 2009 - Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus Yo, fuck the 00's. "
You forgot Radiohead in the 1990's was awesome.
However, the 00's have Muse (except their first album, which wasn't that great anyway), Dream Theater brought out Octavarium, Breaking Benjamin etc.
Also, GUITAR HERO.
It's funny how gaming was one of the only forms of entertainment that held up in the 2000's. Probably has something to do with it being a lot younger form than say film or music, both of which seem to be running dry of compelling ideas and originality. Music especially, well at least QOTSA was amazing during the 00's. I just hope gaming doesn't go the same way before long. :/
"Probably has something to do with it being a lot younger form than say film or music, both of which seem to be running dry of compelling ideas and originality."Like the theater that's more than 2000 years old?
And music that's been around for God knows how long?
Dude. Stop talking bullshit.
Hollywood has been "running out of ideas" since world war 2. Originality doesn't exist, but you can get pretty close to it if you try hard enough. Big name companies, however, are looking for a return on their investments, so they try to cash in on "sure successes". These come in the form of popular licenses for adaptations and rehashings of old, proven concepts, or even remakes of old classics.
" @SeriousCat said:I thought this thread was comparing 90's to 00's only. By "held up" I only mean differences between how things were in the 90's and what they're like now. Sheesh."Probably has something to do with it being a lot younger form than say film or music, both of which seem to be running dry of compelling ideas and originality."Like the theater that's more than 2000 years old? You don't rely on wikipedia's information, you use it as a guide to other really useful information. Wikipedia is a gateway, not a stopping point.
If you're not using wikipedia, YOU are the idiot. It is probably the best way to get a quick idea of what any subject is about. Yes, editing can be a problem, but it generally is not.
