Website name ideas?

Ok so I was a huge fan of the giantbomb crew when they were at gamespot, followed them here, etc

Has anyone ever heard the story of how giantbomb.com came to be?

reason i ask is because im trying to start my own .com website to blog about my playthroughs, post some reviews, have discussions with friends, etc

because i dont have grand plans right now it would be easy to pick some silly stupid name and make it a .net or .us or something, but who knows, maybe i wil have so much fun with it and down the line my friends and i would like to actually generate real web traffic to it...

thats why i want to make it a .com and be somewhat serious about it. Problem is i swear EVERY name i could think of for a gaming website is taken. ive spent hours plugging in different names to make stuff work. even used tools like bustaname.com to mix words together, no luck

ive given up on the idea of having "game" or "gaming in the title, and then i look at this site... where did they get giantbomb? it doesnt automatically scream "gaming" but it just works... dont know why. its catchy

i need something like that

so i turn to you guys for help and inspiration. any tips on how to find a name? any good name ideas yourself that would sound ok/cool and might be available to use?

i never thought the most frustrating part would be getting the name... i dont know any html so im really anxious to start but once i start with a name everything rides off that, so i have to choose once and wisely

They have talked about this a couple of times. Maybe on How To Build A Bomb (the first video series they put up) or one of the first few bombcasts...

They instantly banned words like "game" or "gaming" because there's enough sites that sound the same already (Gamespot, Gamestop, Gamesradar, Gametrailers) and since the site was a giant wiki of things to do with games, they just kept throwing words that EVOKE VIDEOGAMES at the wall til something stuck.

So after a huge list of saying things that were in videogames, "Giant Bomb" stuck cos it just rhythmically sounded better than the other ones. And "Cos it's a big thing and it's like-- constantly blowin up!..."

It's not super smart and it's not even a really great name (or logo) but the site and the people have MADE it a good name, and GiantBomb sounds great now cos you think of Ryan, Vinny, Jeff and Brad and Patrick when you hear it. and Dave, and Drew.

Polygon, however, is a shit name. Don't be cute like that. Just pick something you like and you feel like represents your dudes.

My most successful website had a name I put two seconds of thought in and I was constantly asked why I chose such a odd name. Really, it's how you get the word out about your website and what you are doing on it that matters more than the name. Though there's a case to be made that innocuous names can be memorable.

i suppose i could start with the same idea... think of all the common video game objects/tropes and try mixing a few together till i find something that doesnt sound AWFUL

and i agree, i never really wanted game in the name, as its so generic sounding

Last year I started a game dev company and I had to come up with a name, and I named it tinyBuild. Cos it was a nickname I had once, cos I'm a skinny nerd :|

It has all these connotations about a business, and the style of stuff we do, and cute little iPhone games and indie stuff and do-it-yourself-edness and underdog-edness, but same as GiantBomb that was just an accident. It's really just a name my friends gave me in college, so I'll always be happy with it, and that's the point.

So I guess you should put a size descriptor in your name (?)
