Recently it's been difficult finding any movies that I want to watch when looking at lists of more modern stuff (second half of last decade-ish). So I want to ask you guys. What are some classics that will draw you in regardless of how old they are. They don't need to be old, maybe I missed something while i was skimming over modern stuff. In any case, just list your top 3 and maybe even a bit more than that if you want. I just don't want there to be a huge list for each post.
What are your top 3 must watch movies of all time?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I'm gonna avoid most of the classics that will probably be recommended numerous times in this thread and go with movies that you should watch that you might have missed:
- Kicking and Screaming (not the Will Ferrell movie, but the 1994 one directed by Noah Baumbach). Maybe my all-time favorite, but it might have helped that I watched it towards the end of my college life, when I didn't really know what I was doing with my future.
- The Good, the Bad, the Weird.
- Attack the Block.
Bonus: Watch Indie Game: the Movie. Such a fantastic documentary!
All time:
- Drive
- Children of Men
- Pulp fiction
(^^no particular order, but Children of men probably edges out to be my favorite)
Honorable mentions:
- Inglorious bastards
- Trainspotting
- 127 hours
- Eraserhead
- Tim and eric's Billion dollar movie (probably one of the most creative and self aware comedies in a long while, it's the cabin in the woods of the comedy world and mocks stale, safe comedies in a really amazing way.)
- Machete (nailed the style and is plain entertaining)
- Underground (Directed by Emir Kusturica, you can't go wrong with that movie)
- Ciudade de Deus
- Brazil (Directed by Terry Gilliam)
@Thevamp25: I approve, because Children of Men and Starship Troopers. Fuck Yeah. Though I did hate Indie Game.
- Up
- Rushmore
- Clerks? South Park? In Bruges? Children of Men?
I can't tell, but I know I have my top 2 solid, and I don't see them changing soon. Up, I believe to be the greatest cinematic achievement ever, so yeah watch that shit.
Oh, I read it as "top 3 most watched". Oh well, I'm gonna answer it like that anyways. Btw, these are not my "best 3 movies of all time"
Balto, Starship Troopers, The Sandlot
At least 100 times each...
Movies I watched over many times from last 20ish years : Terminator 2, Matrix, The Big Lebowski, 12 Monkeys, Pulp Fiction, Sin City...... other more serious "good" films: Million Dolor Baby, There Will Be Blood, City of God.
Whatever you do, DO NOT WATCH STARSHIP TROOPERS 2. I'm not even joking, worse movie ever.
Summer Wars
Pirates of the Caribbean (for some reason I just find these films fun to watch, good background noise to)
Rocky
Other than that, I don't rewatch movies very often. And the only reason I've seen those as much as I have is because of my brother watching them.
I guess Inception, Brick, and Dodgeball in no particular order. In the last year or two I've basically completely burnt out on movies. I used to watch 2 or 3 a day when I had more time, now I have almost zero interest in any of them and watch maybe 1 a month. Not only that but I feel like I have no idea about the good stuff thats coming out unless it's something huge like The Dark Knight Rises. I could probably just use a good movie podcast or something to reinvigorate my interest now that Screened is dead to me.
I got a sec - here's a few from the top of my head...
Action/Adventure:
- Aliens
- Ronin
- Indiana Jones Trilogy
Drama:
- Lost in Translation
- Eastern Promises
- The Shawshank Redemption
Comedy:
- The Big Lebowski
- Being John Malkovich
- Ghostbusters
Psychological Thriller:
- The Shining
- Moon
- The Game
Horror:
- The Exorcist
- Silence of the Lambs
- It
War Movies:
- Tora! Tora! Tora!
- The Great Escape
- Crimson Tide
Science Fiction:
- Aliens :)
- Terminator 2: Judgement Day
- 2010
Hope that helps.
Nothing too shocking, just my absolute favorites
- Back to the Future I, II & III
- American Psycho
- Evangelion 2.22
Most have been mentioned, but I'd like to throw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Up in the Air, and Network into the mix.
If we're talking my actual favorites, and not just recommendations, we'd go:
1. Rushmore (It's the funniest movie I've ever seen and still has the distinction of making me cry.)
2. Empire Strikes Back
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I'm going to stay away from mainstream films that are likely already suggested.
Harold and Maude
F for Fake
Addams Family Values (this is the sequel to the simply OK Addams Family movies)
1. Big Lebowski- It's simply the best film of all time in my opinion it's perfect.
2. Superbad- Endlessly funny and I like Michael Cera so fuck off haters. Also I feel that this is kind off my generations The Graduate or Fight Club, even if it does have a retro feel to it.
3. Rushmore- Bill Murray is the best actor ever, end of discussion.
Honestly 2 and 3 change a lot depending on what i've seen recently but the Big Lebowski will always be top.
other 2's and 3's are South Park, Lost In Translation, Slither and Dawn of the Dead (remake).
Seriously though FUCK Tarantino. Pulp Fiction is good but the rest is shit, Kill Bill especially.
LOTR 1,2,3.
I just watched the extended versions of these a couple weeks ago, and yeah it just reminded me of why these are my favorite movies.
I don't think I can pick 3 movies of all time but here's 3 I really enjoy:
1) LOTR (All three shut up)
2) Submarine
3) American Psycho
- Children of Men
- No Country for Old Men
- Rope (watch it now!)
Others:
- Pan's Labyrinth
- Paper Moon
- Rear Window
- Spirited Away
- True Romance
- Let the Right One In
- Bicycle Thieves
@MikeGosot: Have you seen that japanese movie about a guy who goes back in time and has a watch that stops time or something. I let my friend borrow it and I borrowed cowboy bebop and we never traded back. I feel like it was a bad trade.
what movies i think everyone should see? and not necessarily the ones i think are the best? ok!
1.) the star wars trilogy (yes, i said the trilogy -_-)
2.) the indiana jones trilogy (yes, i said the trilogy -_-)
3.) the lord of the rings trilogy
they're all absolutely fantastic, have pretty significant cultural impact. and are enjoyable to pretty much anyone and everyone. ive seen all of those movies like a dozen times each at least, and i could still sit down and happily watch any one of them right now.
- Tarzan (Disney Animated Version)
- Cloverfield
- (500) Days of Summer
I think those are amazing movies that cover a variety of genres, so I couldn't get bored of them easily. I kind of took this more as an "If you were stranded on an island and only had 3 movies..." thing.
So tough to choose! At the moment it's probably
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Blade Runner
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
1st place: Pulp Fiction (The characters, the dialogue, the way the plot jumps around, the way it is shot, the soundtrack... Pulp Fiction just kind of has it all. )
2nd place:The first Star Wars trilogy (because it has cool space magic stuff in it...)
Contentious 3rd place: The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, American Psycho and Memento
