From all the virtues what do you consider to be the most important one?

For me it is temperance. All virtues are good in a moderate amount. When excess comes into play, all is for naught.

Honesty, but temperance seems equally as important.

Honesty for me. For instance I could never do a job where I'm knocking on people's door pushing stuff on old women ect or phoning people up trying to sell people things they don't want. It's not me. I don't know how people can do that.

Charity. Society is too impersonal and concerned with individuality nowadays.

So much could be solved if we all contributed.

Honesty and manners. I will never understand why people find it so dam hard to just say what they are thinking and tell the dam truth.

As for manners, I'm not talking about being an uptight dip shit about social protocols but it amazes me how so many people find it hard to just be polite in every day conversations, saying thanks, excuse me. etc.

Respectfulness. This means respect for your fellow human beings. This goes above and beyond not being a total dick to someones face. For example, when you see a free sample tray, just take one. Another thing that pisses me off is in clothings stores. People dig like mad men trying to find the size they want and once they obtain it, they leave a wake of mess. I understand that the size might be at the bottom of the pile, but you do not need to claw your way through it and then not clean up your mess.

Respect entails thinking about other humans and realizing that you should not only respect them but also the areas that they might use.

DON'T READ ANY AYN RAND BOOKS.

Her "objectivism" is pure bullshit. She's a proto-neo-con.

If we all did as Ayn suggested, we'd live in a dog eat dog society which devours itself.... oh wait, we already do....

@theguy:  No, I haven't read any of her work. Quickly looking her up - I probably wouldn't agree with her philosophy for our future. I'm much more aligned with Marx, in that I think capitalism had its place in society at one point in time. However I believe the state of our modern global economy is telling us that capitalist society is becoming more detrimental than productive, and needs to be replaced by a more modern political system which promotes less "me" and more "we" type of mentality; especially in the United States. I'm kind of a socialist sympathizer, but I see the positives and negatives of both socialist and capitalist economies.

Looking at the time period she was alive, she probably experienced the individualist mentality that came with capitalism in the early 1900's, and like a lot American philosophers, believed it was where society should go.

Anyway, gotta love Sociology.

Realness. I can't stand posers. I probably dislike posers more than anything else in the world.

To separate this from other virtues and vices, though, I don't mean honesty, fidelity, or sincerity. Lies have their places, or they wouldn't exist, and I honestly don't think a world without lies would be a very nice place to live. Absolute truth doesn't exist, either, so trying to get as close as possible isn't necessarily a noble goal. And faking sincerity has its place as well. Speaking out of personal experience, I sometimes have to pretend to feel sorry or sad about something, because a 'normal' person would be, and so it's expected of me.

However, pretending to be someone you're not? That just pisses me off to no end.

Obviously politics are a different story, since I do somewhat subscribe to Machiavelli's doctrine.

Reagan contacted me back in '84 personally to say shit was happening in Afghan. I wasn't interested initially, but he said there was a future post in washington in it for me. So they teamed me up with a guy called Timmy Laden (no idea what happened to him), and fucked shit up.

It was me doing the fucking of the shit up though. Behind enemy lines, survival on only what I found on field. I organised whole groups of farmers into deadly teams, they learned their stuff from me... me alone.

When I came back though in '89, with the SU lying in tatters, they didn't want to know me. They'd already teamed up and gotten into bed with the Russians on trade deals, and associating with me was deemed shameful, especially if Gorbhachev found out about it. They denied knowledge of me. Not even a handshake.

I was fucking betrayed then. Ever since I have plotted my vengeance.

True story.
