Across all settings, what is your personal favorite spaceship? Could be a fighter, could be a cruiser, could be a frigate. Could be a factory model, could be the only one of its kind. But it has to travel through space.
What is your favorite spaceship? (Topic 3 years old)
- The "deterrence fleet" - in The Evolutionary Void (DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU EVER PLAN TO READ THE BOOK: the entire "fleet" of a galaxy spanning human civilization doesn't even exist until needed, and then it is a single dude made into essentially an electron matrix lacking any physical dimensions, thus unaffected by conventional weapons, unconstrained by speed limits of ftl travel and able to freely affect any other ships as it's pleases, and in the end it doesn't even do jack shit to affect the events oops)
- GSV Sleeper Service - in Excession
- Discworld - Discworld novels duh

They turn a dude into the Matrix, got it.
I am kind of being unfair tho and maybe a little childish. (to myself and maybe the intent of the topic) :P
Something written in a book exists mostly in my imagination and will therefore always seem cooler then something visual. Also kind of unfair are sentient ships, a personality goes a long way for making something more interesting right on the starting line. The final unfairness is scale the first and last examples are technically spaceships but on completely opposite sides of the spectrum (and thus could be argued to not even be spaceships).
My second answer the GSV Sleeper Service is really the only "classical" spaceship.
Even though my screen name is from a game, it's funny than my favourite spaceship is also named the same thing.
The Gunstar from The Last Starfighter!
Yuuuuup. These things are awesome. Size is somewhat ridiculous but then again the Warhammer universe was never known for subtlety.
Normandy is a close second though.
The Enterprise. It has a replicator on board that functions using recycled human waste. How cool is that!

What? From Peter F. Hamilton's book? I read it, I do not remember that, and I very much love everything he wrote.
I'm going to have to go with this old standby:

I loooooved me some Star Wars when I was a kid. It's really a shame Lucas crapped it all up so bad.
I also have a weird soft spot for this generic little thing:

Which was probably one of my most favorite toys ever as a child.
Edit: Ha! I just noticed the exact same Millenium Falcom up there...
@sinusoidal: It's his last trilogy, The Void trilogy continuing the Commonwealth saga. The deterrence fleet is talked about constantly, but is in action for like a few pages.
The Super Star Destroyer from Star Wars (although I don't like how the bridge is sticking out), the Battlestar Galactica from the newer Battlestar Galactica and the UD-4L Cheyenne Dropship from Aliens.
My three are a little obvious but they're mine.
SSV Normandy SR-2 before the Alliance retrofitted it all shitty.

T-65 X-Wing Starfighter; the best starfighter ever. Lock S-foils in attack position!

USG Ishimura. My favorite game-sized ship. Better than the Von Braun or the Rickenbacker! Better than the Nostromo! It's a PLANET-CRACKER CLASS!

A couple more!

I love the Normandy.

I am partial to the OG version, too.

@fattony12000: OG was a little blue and lacking in features. Cockpit, CIC, lo-fi space phone, sleeping pods and a vehicle bay where half the squad sits around. SR2 has a luxury captain's room, bathrooms, fancy quantum entanglement space phone, science lab, full medical lab, minifacting station, personal rooms, beds, a cafeteria, a couple lounges and an onboard AI. OG is straight military and SR2 is a pimpmobile.
Do giant-ass robots count?
If they're great big machines that can fly around space with jets or gravitic propulsion or something, sure. If they're magical fucking robots who use cosmic aether magic to fly around then no. Wizards are not spaceships.
Unless....
The show was mediocre, but the ships and design of Space 1999 was excellent. Very functional ships, vehicles, and equipment. The Eagle above was the work horse ship of the show. The front egg shape "command module" of the Eagle can detach from the main body enabling it to dock with another compatible craft or for use as an emergency escape capsule. The main modules that fit under that tubal superstructures with landing pads w/ engine pod varied from Passenger, Reconnaissance, Rescue, Transport/Supply, Freighter, Laboratory, Winch, and Combat modules.
Just a very functional and plausible design, and it looks sort of cool.

Also...
Any science fiction graphic designer over 35 who doesn't say they were influenced by Chris Foss is lying.
@psylah: Yeah I pretty much rolled a Romulan in STO just to have this ship. I mean, Romulans are my favorite Star Trek alien faction, so I probably would have played as one eventually anyway, but that ship... I just love that ship so much. I also like what they did with the Advance Dyson Sphere ship as well. I grinded to get both the free Fed version and free Rom version, then they offered better pay versions... oh well.
@happenstance: That shot was such a wonderful reveal for the new ship in First Contact.
Slave 1, Millenium Falcon, Serenity, and the Normandy are immediate responses to this question. For me, it's not just about look, but about character. And those four boats have that in spades.
But, oh man. There are so many.
