Every time I see a podcast thread I'm reminded of how god damn much I miss TalkRadar.
I don't know if you know about it and you don't like it for whatever reason, but just in case you don't know, the Laser Time podcasts are all ex-TalkRadar dudes. I used to listen to TalkRadar back in the day and then I found out they moved over to Laser Time, so I listen there. You should check it out if you haven't as the crew has spread out from just video games. Vidjagame Apocalypse is the video game podcast if you want to kind of stick to games though.
Besides the Bombcast and the Beastcast, I usually listen to a lot of stuff from the Laser Time network of podcasts.
Laser Time - Dead media formats, press conference disasters, making fun of Florida (by native Floridians), comedians and hecklers, etc. Just a very fun and random pop culture topic podcast.
Vidjagame Apocalypse - Video game focused podcast with a top 5 list about crazy topics at the very top before delving into the week in games news, releases, etc.
Thirty-Twenty-Ten - Interesting podcast that looks at the exact week 30 years, 20 years, and 10 years ago. For example, the week of June 19-25 in 1986, 1996, and 2006. Pop culture history basically.
VGMpire - Video game music podcast. Really great commentary on it; sometimes with the original composers themselves.
Beyond the usual podcasts that a lot of people here have mentioned, I listen to the following:
Skeptoid - A science podcast leveraging skepticism against all manner of pseudoscience, fads, and conspiracy theories.
DDT Wrestling - Two duders talk about wrestling. More of a personality driven show than other wrestling podcasts I've listened to.
The Purple Stuff Podcast - A nostalgia/toys/pop culture celebration show.
Lore - A podcast where a guy tells spooky "true" stories. Heavily fictionalized at times, but well-produced and entertaining.
I just realized 2 things.
1: I'm fuckin' 31. (truly one of the most shocking realizations you'll have in your life...)
2: that means that at least a couple of people here would be too young to remember the Ricky Gervais podcasts, back in the day. It's legendary. It's called The Ricky Gervais Show, which started as a radio show and later turned into a podcast. Even later still they made The Ricky Gervais Guide To... I think most of these can quite easily be found on youtube and probably elsewhere on the internet as well.

I remember watching the animated Ricky Gervais show on HBO here in the US. I used to like it a lot, but then I would go on and off HBO (currently off) and I just never kept up with it. I never heard the older radio show though. Like in the late 90s, I guess? I think I first saw the animated version here around 2007-8?
@myketuna: the radio show started in 2001, the animated series was 2010. I never much cared for the animation, and to be fair the radio show gets better when it starts revolving around Karl more (which is pretty early on anyway). I would suggest starting with the podcasts, and if you want more there's a ton of recorded radio shows as well. If you already know you like it you might as well start at the beginning.
Did you ever listen to the old XFM stuff they did? That was gold.
I regularly listen to:
TOFOP: A comedy podcast hosted by Australian comedian Wil Anderson, and actor Charlie Clausen.
The Dollop: An American history comedy podcast, hosted by comedians Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds.
Mental Illness Happy Hour: Comedian Paul Gilmartin explores mental illness, alongside a host of fascinating and inspiring guests.
Solomonster Sounds Off: Essential listening for any wrestling fans.
Though it's finished, of course I have to recommend Walking the Room. Life changing stuff.

In video games it's only Giant Bomb that I really care about. Although I do still love A Life Well Wasted. Other than that it's a lot of: This American Life, Serial, The New Yorker Radio Hour, Fresh Air, Comedy Bang Bang, How Did This Get Made, various football (soccer) podcasts, some Swedish stuff, and Here's the Thing w/ Alec Baldwin. And Hardcore History whenever thats dude releases a new episode.
@clush: LOVE the old Ricky Gervais show, even the radio stuff is sometimes great. Shame they haven't made more of that stuff, I've never been a fan of the TV stuff involving Karl really.
Marc Maron's podcast isn't bad. Not a huge podcast guy as much anymore.
@rotnac Sam Roberts lol...I know him from Opie and Anthony. He's not bad once you understand his sarcasm style. Which is nearly 100% of the time.
Would like one or two more that are towards Sunday/Monday/Tuesday
the ones I listen to as soon as they drop:
Beastcast
Bombcast
The Flop house
Ones I make a point of listening to on a very regular basis (the week they drop) and don't skip:
99% invisible
History of Japan
8-4 Play
My Brother My Brother And Me
The ones I'm listening to with a back log and I'm listening in order:
History of Rome
Revolutions
The ones in which I cherry pick guests, artists or topics I like:
WTF
Song Exploder
The ones that I'm still subscribed to and will listen to if I run out of everything else:
Comedy Bang Bang
CAGcast
Stuff you missed in history class
Podquisition
Hollywood Babbleon.
Besides Giant Bomb podcasts I listen to alot of Comedy Bang Bang, improv4humans with Matt Besser and some other Earwolf content. I used to listen to not only the Ricky Gervais Show, but all of the XFM radio show as well.
I've kind of soured on Gervais as of late though.
Edit: I'll add Filip & Fredrik podcast which I listen to from time to time. A pair of Swedish TV personalities, their podcast is really hit and miss.
Aside from the Bombcast
Comedy Bang Bang - Improv comedy...when its good hilarious, but as with all improv can be hit and miss
Beastcast (not every week)
More Or Less - Radio 4 Satistics show (more interesting than it sounds, basically looks at the use of stats in politics/media and generally shows how mistaken/misused they are
This American Life and Serial
The Savage Lovecast - Wonderful sex and relationship podcast, really eye-opening, honest, radical and sometimes moving
Kermode and Mayos Film Review - BBC Radio film show
8-4 Play (not every week)
Filmspotting - Slightly more cineaste podcast than KMFR
Richard Herrings Leicester Square Podcast
The Moth Hour - Great true short stories
....probably some more I have forgotten/only listen to very occasionally
Aside from the Bomb and Beast (sounds like an awesome pub name), OSWReview's video stuff and the SoKast. I keep thinking I should stop listening to the latter, seeing as its whole MO is obsessive but its a car crash I can't stop craning my neck to see. And the err... Playstation Country Podcasts that I'm not in.
Beastcast
Bombcast
Retronauts
Hardcore Gaming 101 GC9X
VGMpire
Vidjagame Apocalypse [mostly the beginning list, then depends on the cast \ week]
Laser Time [some eps]
The Jimquisition
Fistshark Marketing
Welcome to Night Vale
Retsutalk
@sirgorgonzola: walking the room was so damn good (sans the last bunch but that's understandable). It's been a few years, should relisten...
Stuff I listen to regularly:
Stuff I listen to sporadically:
I think everything I listen to has already been mentioned at least once, but I'll say the best pro wrestling shows are Joe vs The World and the Justin Shapirshow. They have the same guys on it, one guy's the host on one, and one's the host on the other. Only real difference is JvTW usually focuses on older stuff, while JS is usually more current event-based. The only consistently legitimately funny wrestling podcast I've heard. Only downside is they rarely release episodes, maybe 4 or 5 a year each. If that.
Bombcast & Beastcast
Unlocked
PlayStation Beyond
Nintendo Voice Chat
Stuff You Should Know
Retronauts
Game Scoop
Blurry Photos
The Nosh Show
This Year (if they ever have any new episodes).
Some of the ones listed above sound interesting though and I'll definitely check it out.
I listened to podcasts briefly (The Complete Guide to Everything and The Ricky Gervais Show) at one point in my life, but quickly found it to be a waste of time. I like to consume stories and play games, sometimes listen to music. Podcasts get in the way of that. I'm not that interested in what other people have to say. It's one of the reasons I also rarely listen to movie commentaries or watch special features.
how on earth do you guys have time to listen to this many podcasts?
The commute to and from work (SoCal traffic is a bitch), doing things around the house/backyard, in the shower, playing games (that I don't need to listen to), and on the occasions I'm at work before the store opens. I used to primarily listen to audio books, but the bulk of my listening time is usually in the car, however with the windows down it can be hard to hear.
@slag: In my case, I listen as I do other things. Works well while cooking, cleaning, and those "podcast friendly" videogames.
Think about it: some podcasts aren't weekly. It's like watching one episode of a TV season a week, or sometimes, every two weeks. Not all of these podcasts are two-hour travesties like GB does, they're usually formatted for 20-30 minutes.
Unlike radio, it's all archived (obviously). Some podcasts like Welcome to Nightvale is (mostly) newbie friendly if you just listen to the latest episode, because it's framed as a fictional community news radio (sometimes). But there are also people who would binge on the back catalog, not unlike Netflix bingers.
Now, for what I listen to:
Bombcast
Beastcast
Welcome to Nightvale
99% Invisible
Modest list, but I think it's quality over quantity
Bombcast
Beastcast
Joe Rogan Experience (I skip the MMA stuff...)
Deep Inside the Rabbit Hole (Can be interesting, can also be horrible)
Startalk
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (Haven't listened to much of it, but the guy is very good)
Serial
------------------------
I'm a little surprised to see the lack of Joe Rogan love on here...
Joe Rogan (guy can be a bit grating but is a genuine guy and ever curious which leads to interesting conversations with interesting guests)
Cheap Seats (MMA news podcast)
Sherdog Roundtable (for MMA betting)
Muscle for life (great fitness podcast, devoid of bro science)
Hardcore History (dumb name, great podcast)
Waking up with Sam Harris (don't always agree with the guy, but damn is he interesting and smart)
Stormcast (Heroes of the storm podcast)
Ten Minute podcast (used to listen to this one a lot, lately the regular guests have been absent so I am not as interested anymore)
The Nerdist (occasionally they have an actor or actress on who i've always wondered what they are like to have a conversation with and this is probably the closest I'll ever get to that)
Daily/weekly:
Randomly:
Probably a few others, but that's the bulk. More than I thought actually.
This is a good list! I also highly recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (Joe loves it and has had Dan on a couple times). I never liked history very much until I heard "The Wrath of the Khans" from DCHH! Then I was really hooked.
I also love NPR's Invisibilia, Criminal, and Serial podcasts. I am amazed at their consistent quality. Anyone who hasn't tried those, DO IT!
My least favorite podcast is Giant Bomb Presents, honestly. I love the Bombcast and Beastcast - but "Presents" was a HUGE borefest 90% of the time, and has some of the least interesting guests ever (most, one or two were decent).
Some of my favorite podcasts of all time were the ones with Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington, and Steve Merchant (the Ricky Gervais Show). Many were paid audiobooks for $1 or whatever, but I've listened to them all like 5 times - I can't get enough of Karl's insane viewpoint and Ricky's hilarious jabs.
Constants:
Bombcast
Beastcast
Danswers
The /Filmcast (and other Dave Chen podcasts like Clash of Kings, The Ones Who Knock, etc.)
Kermode & Mayo Film Review (basically the premiere British film critic and my favourite British radio host)
Penn's Sunday School (I don't agree with Penn Jillette on everything but he is an endlessly interesting personality)
Occasionals
Power Bombcast (depends if I'm up on wrestling that month)
Filmspotting (depends on the film under review)
The Overcast (depends how much I'm playing Overwatch
Dead Air (depends on the content under review)
The Lobby (depends if I have too much time to kill)
Mission Log (I'm kinda bouncing around listening to episodes as I power through Star Trek TNG right now but I've overtaken these guys so I might start listening week by week)
Simon Mayo's Confessions (I don't know why I don't listen to it more, it's super affable and entertaining)
Basically everything in the Occasional's list is subject to be cycled out as soon as it stops being interesting or I find a podcast that it more fun.
On Youtube:
I used to listen to the Tested podcast every week but stopped not long after the Whiskey Media buyout, and since Will left I have no reason to go back.
Everyone should listen to "Who Charted?"
I know I posted a list of podcasts in here before but if I had to pick one to recomend to people its this one.
I'm guessing the Bombcast/Beastcast are given so I'll skip to my usual recommendation for Marc Maron's WTF. I'll also throw in Pardon My Take if you're a sports guy and/or have followed the saga of "PFTCommenter" on Twitter and SB Nation.
More recently, I've been getting into Chapo Trap House as it's one of the few political news shows I can stomach, though definitely not for those who take the news seriously. Having said that, they had some really good episodes lately about the Brexit vote, Mexican teachers on strike, and even the relationship between the Turkish PM Erdogan and his former friend Gulen. Also, check out Chapo's alternate-universe offshoot The DigCast, starring Cafe.com's own Polk Award-nominated journalist Carl "The Dig" Diggler as he attempts to honor The Discourse but keeps digressing into his own struggles with family court and online dating. In episode two, he even tries to read his screenplay/West Wing fanfiction to a former White House speechwriter and it is great if you like cringe humor.
You Must Remember This Podcast about the golden age of Hollywood
Friends at the Table Austin's actual play podcast
Thinking Sideways Podcast mystery solving podcast
The Generation Why Podcast true crime podcast
Til Death Do Us Part Patrick and Katie's horror movie podcast
Lore Folklore podcast
Hey thanks dudes wasn't really expecting serious answers, was more an expression of disbelief. Just kinda impressed you guys can do that, makes me feel like an underachiever. All your explanations make total sense.
@monkehhh:ah, my workplace doesn't let me do that. Even if it did, I find spoken voice stuff distracting when I'm doing most of what I gotta do (unless it's really rote stuff like data entry). But yeah I can see how you can pound a bunch of those out.
@bill_mcneal: I've tried the podcasting while gaming thing. While I get the appeal I've come to the conclusion that if a game is that repetitive that I don't need to listen to what's happening, I probably ought to play something I like better.
as for commuting I tend to go old school and go for talk radio. Sport talk, Baseball/football/basketball live games, local stuff, NPR etc. Force of habit or laziness not sure which. That and I carpool.
Didn't think about the shower, I may have to try that.
@ikabubu: ah ok, the 20-30 minute thing makes a lot more sense. Mainly do mine while doing house stuff too.
Bombcast
Beastcast
Joe Rogan Experience (depending on the guest)
Pynchon in Public Podcast
Idle Book Club
Drunken Peasants
I don't really have that much time to listen to podcasts so I am frequently behind on the ones that I try to keep up with (still on the June 21st Bombcast).
I've just started listening to Alice Isn't Dead and it's pretty fantastic.
Q: Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?
A: Because the dead return, because light reverses, because the sky is a gap, because its a shout, because light reverses, because the dead return, because footsteps on the ceiling, because footsteps in the basement, because the sky is a shout, because it’s a gap, because the grass doesn’t grow or grows too much or grows wrong, because the dead return, because the dead return. That, that is why the chicken crosses the road.
I don't listen to a ton of podcasts but the ones I do are...
Bomb/Beastcasts
The Adventure Zone
My Favorite Murder
And occasionally Friends at the Table
@crashguy152: no tell em steve dave?, there last ep was one of the best.
