As a new decade approaches the people of our world, it is time reflect on this past decade. What, for you, will make you remember this decade the most? It could be personal or global, what will you think of, many years in the future when someone mentions the 2000's? For me personally, that has yet to be decided, who knows, it might be something that happens in the next month and a half before January 1st, 2010.
What will you remember the most about the 2000's? (2000-2009)
I'm kidding. I'll remember 9/11, of course. Also, the internet taking over everything. I know it around before, but it's become really mainstream with things like YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook. Cell phones got significantly better and everyone carries one now. And on a more personal note, it's the decade I grew up. I turned 15 in 2000, and I'll be 25 when 2010 rolls around.
- My introduction to hide's music
- All the awesome anime I watched
- The fun times with my family.
- The friends I've made over the years
- The first day of Giantbomb
I really have no idea, I guess what was significant to me was my first real introduction to video games, Growing up, and all the stuff that happened between 2001 and 2007. That is what I have on the top of my head, These last two years have been great for games but they were sadly the worst I had in the entire decade for me. Also, discovering new music that I can stick with for the first time, going outside the country, and have technology increase significantly.
Really refining who I was as an individual. This is the decade where I came into my own with games, music, science, skepticism, cartoons, comedy all that stuff.
Events are events, those are for history books and sociology studies (which I look forward to doing!).
" The begin of the fall of the Western world. "More like the fall of the Eastern world, namely Japan. It greatly saddens me, as I love Japan. Remember all those JRPG's that used to get released like once a week? No more, dude. The Japanese gaming market is falling behind the Western one, and fast. I hope that it somehow regains the glory it once had, as the Japanese laid down the foundations for gaming.
Great question, as every decade holds defining moments for people. Here's some of the things that I think will be remembered:
- 9/11 - This led to the world becoming a drastically different place in every country.
- Borat - A serious cultural shock as well as pop culture icon.
- Obama - America broke a huge race barrier by electing its first African-American president.
- Y2K - Everyone thought the world was going to go into the Dark Ages again. The general hysteria was hilarious but also mystifying, as no one knew if it was true or not.
- Reality TV - The rise of reality TV changed network TV, as it was possible to produce low-budget shows and obtain high ratings.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth - The general availability and inexpensiveness of these changed the way we communicate greatly.
Those, personally, are the things I'll remember. It's so weird to say that I remember a time when cell phones and MP3s didn't exist. Hell, I can remember a time when the internet wasn't a public thing!!!
9/11
finding out and listening to Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, George Carlin, Robin Williams,
The first world leader that I grew up with and had some comprehension of how he and the people that pulls his strings completely fucked the world.
Turning 21
The internet,
comprehension of how people just follow and don't think for themselves.
Finding out that the world doesn't revolve around you,
Jeff Gertsmann getting fired, (I stayed glued to my PC wanting Information... How sad.)
Finding out why I have this thing between my legs, Using it, Alot, then having sex with girls, Then with women, and older women, getting good with it, (awesome)
Learning and appreciating music, finding out my love of music,
a few other things as well
SEGA exits the console making business
War on Terror
Got my drivers permit
Graduated elementary, middle, and high school
9/11 is definitely the thing that sticks out the most. Nobody will ever forget that day. Also, seeing the Red Wings win a couple Stanley Cups (almost 3!!) was a very special thing to me, being the die hard hockey fan I am. Also Canada winning Olympic hockey gold in 2002 was a great time. I moved to a new city, finally got my education rolling. Big changes this decade, which should work towards making the next decade even crazier!
My introduction to the beautiful combination of wood, steel and wires that is a guitar.
My introduction to the wonderful combination of flesh, pink and wet that is the vagina.
My introduction to the lots-of-fun-but-not-so-great-for-you combination of chemicals, water and syringes that is hard drugs.
My introduction to the awesomely-fun combination of alcohol, music, friends and women that is partying.
Those would be the most memorable things of the past decade for me. Lots of good experiences, but also plenty of bad ones.
" 11/9/2001I was gonna post that >:(
dd/mm/yyyy
The day that shook our world.
I not even an american but attacks on that scale against civilians sends shivers doen my spine.
I am from Ireland btw
"
2000:France-Italy 2-1 France won with a golden goal in football.
2001:9/11
2002:Dee Dee Ramone R.I.P
2003:US gets control of Saddam International Airport in Baghdad, and changes its name to Baghdad International Airport.LMAO XD
2004:Paul Hopkins,Baseball player R.I.P
2005:Hotel fire in Central Paris,killed 21.
2006:My son was born, his name is Scott =)
2007:The Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched.
2008:Obama was elected.
2009:Michael Jackson R.I.P
Obama is allegedly giving us complete UFO disclosure on the 27th.
If that actually happens (it won't) then I think we can add that to the list.
I'll never understand why people think 9/11 is important. Worse tragedies happen everyday and nobody cares. Thousands of African children die per day due to excess diarrhea because of dirty drinking water. Yeah I guess that's not as big of a tragedy of a thousand adults dying one time. Oh yeah and by the way, the number of people who died post-9/11 due to increased highway traffic far exceeds those that died on the day due to the terrorism act, but the statistically-inept public probably doesn't know or care about that either.

Hmm... Working backwards:
2009 - Starting University to study Games Deign
Which involved moving for the fist time in my life.
And being unemployed again.
And completing my HND (At BTEC level) in Interactive Media.
2008 - Obama becoming President

Discoveing the joys of spending all my money on gigs.
Getting my first Xbox 360 (now on my fourth).
2007 - Starting my BTEC HND at college.
Failing my AS Levels at Sixth form.
First real job.
Turning 18
Gordon Brown becoming PM
Glasgow Airport terrorist attack, civilian punches man on fire to the floor, and kicks him in the nuts.
2006 - Acing my GCSEs
Drinking parties, which we all thought were totally coll and awesome at 15/16.
2005 - 7/7 Bombing of London
2004 - Discovering 'good' music. (Punk, Metal, etc)
03-02 - Nothing.
2001 - Starting Secondary school.
9/11
Overall, fairly depressing decade, but on the flip side is growing up and becoming settled with who I am.
Ok, I'll make a list.
- 9/11. Hopefully, this is a day we will truly never forget
- Video Games. They got a lot prettier.
- Obama was elected as the first black president of the United States of America.
- My love for music really developed.
- Micheal Jackson died.
- The rise of the internet, as well as social networking
- Giant Bomb. Truly a great site.
That's about it for now.
We are reaching the final three weeks of what most people perceive as this decade. I think that what I will remember most about this decade was how much of an advance in technology we made and how much closer the world community as a society got. I think others in the future would see this decade as one of paranoia.
I graduated high school in 1999, and I graduated college in 2003. In the years since, I've worked a number of jobs, have been dirt poor, had the chance to work as a game tester at NOA for a time, and am now working full time at a good job. I also recently became a home owner.
I guess you could say that this is the decade I finally ascended to adulthood.
I'm going to go with, in the world of games, I learned to love RPGs. KOTOR was my first love of RPGs and I haven't looked back. Golden Sun, Chrono Cross, all the bioware games, Lost Odyssey, Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 1 and 3.
" @FrankCanada97: The shit music. I'm kidding. I'll remember 9/11, of course. Also, the internet taking over everything. Man marries videogame
My introduction to heavy metal (Which lead to mainstream metal, than to alternative and progressive, back to mainstream, back to heavy, than to thrash, than groove, now Tribal metal)
My introduction to the guitar (Which I could use a new one, like a nice ESP or nice BC Rich..or a semi-hollow)
I'd like to say serious PC gaming, but hey I started at like with the Taco Bell floppy disk games, and sim city back in the early 90s :O
My last year of dependence, and then independence (Well, College->ROTC->Aviation School, I'm not so sure I'll be totally free :D )
But most importantly of all, Giant Bomb being created. This site's sick!
